The histogram is just a guideline for proper exposure and this video shows some reasons why. Are there some tricky exposure situations you'd like more detail on how to deal with?

“The histogram is a tool, not an art critic.” Sound advice right there!👊🏼 I like you’re approach on this channel.

When I want to know the news about cameras, accessories, etc., it is very easy to find channels that provide all the news. but there are very few who actually understand photography. I have been a professional photographer for 40 years and it is with pleasure that I discovered your channel, not that I will discover many things, but it is a channel that will reaffirm what I know about photography. I've always found it strange that people follow the histogram almost religiously, I never look at it, the most important thing is to understand the camera's automatisms depending on the scene we are photographing, and photographing well is indeed an art.

THANK YOU so much! I started this channel because I find gear reviews VERY tiring myself... not to say I never would if it's something I use, but focusing on gear isn't the same as practicing photography. My hope is that this channel could become a 'watering hole' destination to discuss photography instead of always chasing the latest and greatest gear.

Great job sir! Watching while I make my morning coffee lol. I really enjoyed listening to you break down exposure and I agree it really depends on what look you are trying to go for. I know for me personally I use the histogram a lot more for video than I do for photo. Photo if I shoot landscape I usually am always underexposed by 1 stop vs people it can very depending on the look that I am going for. Great stuff as usual I hope your doing well!

When I was younger and we all were shooting film, I got to where, when I got a roll from the processor, if there were five frames that disappointed me... I was surprised. I'm a hobby photographer ONLY. But, I still want good photographs. From the age of ten (1960) I understood good, poor, and median quality for what I was doing. Still an amateur, but still having fun at 72.

Very nicely put but my problem is that canon cameras to me, what you see in the back is what you get, where as sony's displays and histagrams tell lies...

I struggle with exposure. This has shed some light. I would love to hear about the same topic for film. Here’s another topic for discussion, “constrast: what is it and how do you control it”. Stupid yes but another area I struggle with.
@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk3 жыл бұрын
NOT stupid! It's on my short list within the next month! Professional portrait photographers have ENDLESS discussions about controlling contrast, you are asking the right questions!

Charles Glatzer/Canon "Explorer of Light" (who actually DOES take photos of polar bears BTW!!!...) has some great videos on YT (mostly B and H store channel) about his ideas on getting exposure... And what I got from those videos was: "Choose where on the histogram you want a certain, almost singular, tone to be placed (blacks-lower or whites-higher, or an in-between tone...) and then set your exposure for that tone placement in THAT lighting, then go shoot and stop moving the settings around! The camera will place all the REST of the tones where it is designed to capture them." Meaning, like you stated, the camera has basic design limitations, so learn/notice those limits, work within those limitations, and focus on the photo itself... We didn't make the cameras, we just have to make them work for our "artistic vision".

Agree. Like that procedure! Guys who have to push the limits always have great ways of getting the job done - thanks for watching!

Great video and so eloquently stated. The best photo I have taken in the last month was actually on ISO 400 film. I am certain the histogram would be hilariously under exposed, but the image is awesome. Over the last year, my workflow has changed. I used to be religious about getting a textbook histogram and post-processing the crap out of the photo. I am now a all in camera shooter. I still shoot raw, but I have tweaked my camera so it gives me the look I am after. I haven't looked at a histogram in 6 months. The only post processing I need to do are cropping and adding my watermark.

Great video! I like film photography and I like contrasty photos, like the one in your example. Could you, please, talk a bit more about how to achieve a contrasty exposure on film, without manipulating the developing? Thank you.

Hi . Your videos are Very Informative for a aspiring newbie as myself. I’ve got 3 questions. I’ve read and seen the EOS R’s tendency to color skin tones yellow/ greenish in portraits. How do you handle this on the Canon EOS R ? Im considering buying this body over other more expensive Canons ( R6 or R5) so I can put more money into a portrait lens ( RF 50 1.2 or 85 RF 1.2). 3) Am I going to need a tripod to steady these lenses due to the lack of IS in the R and these lenses ? Thanks 😊
@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk2 жыл бұрын
I've not come across a yellow/greenish problem at all - in fact quite the opposite, I find the skin tones to be excellent (but of course I ALWAYS white balance), As to the stab, I'm always a bit surprised that those two lenses DON'T have it.. heck the 85mm non-L f2 HAS stab and it's WONDERFUL. Any lenses with out stab I would definitely recommend a tripod especially because these are HEAVY. Those are GREAT lenses BTW, even without (?!?!?) stab... Top lenses do hold their value very well also. Depending on your budget, the R6 Mk2 is looking very interesting to me BUT, I have not used it yet. Hope I helped, there are always so many pros and cons in these decisions - good luck and thank you for watching!
