Shutter priority mode SEEMS like the easiest way to shoot fast moving action, but you give up control. I’ll demonstrate how I do it PLUS show you the two secrets you need to make great images.

You can't 'buy' good action photography - you have to practice to learn it

So whilst focusing on moving subjects you plan to alter the ISO, f-stop and shutter. And flash the whole field under the sun.

I don't use flash in full sun. The subject must be shaded and I use flash to build the exposure up to the ambient. In full sun you'd have to have a monster flash and/or HSS or something like that not to mention having the subject having to deal with the harsh light

First, when you shoot in shutter, or aperture, priority mode, you also use the exposure compensation dial, so you do have control of exposure levels. Second, when you do action photography, and some other kinds of photography, you often have rapidly changing lighting conditions. Shutter and aperture priority both handle that fast. No matter how much you practice with manual, you will be slower than the camera. Third, if you are worried about too shallow a depth of field, you can increase iso a bit. Noise is usually not a problem, especially if you use noise reduction in post. Different modes are optimized for different situations. For shooting fast moving action, I'd go with shutter priority nearly all of the time. Using flash does usually not work, because you can't get the flash close enough to your moving subject. A tripod is useful in some situations, but not in others. The best way to get an action shot is more context dependent than the video says.

Well, you can use M mode for everything. However, you need to learn how to use the tools on your camera and trust your camera as well. Why use M if you can shoot in a more efficient way with S or A. You can use other tools like exposure compensation or manual ISO to manipulate the other automated processes. And don't be afraid of some ISO. If your ISO is too high, then maybe consider adding more lights to the scene. And if you can't do that, and you can't set up the shutter/aperture differently, then well, that's what you've got to shoot on. Like you said yourself, you're the master of your photography, not the camera.

I focus on motorsports as my primary subject and I've used all 3 modes, and always try to nail the frozen action with the wheels and background blur. I get a little bit with Shutter and I do study my photos that capture that. I've gone through other photos I've taken that nailed both perfectly, Aperture was the best. This video will definitely help me improve.

When you were summoning up the method I immediately imagined Henri Cartier-Bresson’s photograph which then referenced. Artistically it is superb, technically by today’s fancy electronic cameras - not so much. But there is the genius of his eye; the composition and anticipated timing of the image created an enduring image. He saw it in his mind well before he took the image. Thank you for your insights.

It sounds kind of simple... But there are so many "little" things and to get them all into your blood/arsenal is the holy grail. Great advices. I was waiting for the paning one since I heard of the importance of it in a video about birdphotography.

Yup....stuff you know, but don't always remember! Sometimes things just take good old hard work and practice. I only have a little experience with portrait style shooting, but looking forward to getting better. I will be retiring in June so more time will be mine! I really want to take a class on portraiture this spring or summer. I have two shoots I'm doing for friends coming up. One is HS senior, the other is prom. Both will be outside. I have a reflector, but not a flash. Any thoughts about what to look for in terms of an on camera flash for this stuff? Or, do you think off camera is better? I've seen on camera flash with a diffuser used for fill flash both indoors and out. Thanks for your thoughts. Have a great week!

Thanks for watching and Funny you should ask - My NEXT video will be an introduction to studio flash setup! I'm also considering a minimal membership level for the channel where I'd do a private hour or two a month answering questions, would that be something you'd be interested in?

@@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk Ok...will think about that, but possibly. What I would love is to be able to shadow an experienced photographer. The "mentor model" works best with my learning style. I love to watch someone and then experiment using things I've observed. After retirement I plan to get a part time job with a local studio that does school photographs so I can gain hands on experience with lighting equipment as well as shooting techniques.

The mentor model works best with everyone I would argue. The Internet is a distant second, but young people today often don’t realize what they’re missing out with a mentor.

@@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk Completely agree. They often also want a magic pill/quick answer. The master/apprentice model is perfect for something like this. And, as you said so well, it takes practice!!

@@charliejg Look for a local camera club that meets in person. I have learned so much and had a ton of fun going on photo outings with them and talking about all aspects of photography with them.

I know how to use it. I also know when not to use it - which is most of the time. I learned on an old Pentax DSLR with an old manual focus lens that only allowed full manual. Now that I have a camera that can do it all, I use it all. Most aperture priority or program shifting with exposure compensation. Sometimes manual with auto iso but dislike that I can't compensate exposure in that mode. I used to shoot raw but now I just get it right in the camera jpeg with white balance and color tweaks unless I specifically intend to edit that photo more. Shoot film and digital, darkroom printing, whatever. I'm an amateur photographer, which by the root Latin word means "lover of".
