monotribe is banging. and everyone who had one when they came out also had a monotron delay. deadly combo. monotribe drums sound so good, just lacking native contouring and so mods are rather necessary on it. and that squelchy ms-20 filter in a small unit. killer. partners great with dfam/subharmicon/m32/minibrute2s/etc.

These came out when I was in college. My very first analog synth and my introduction to hardware music production. The synth engine is especially good for synthesized drum sounds and percussive sounds; the otherwise distracting clicking is actually handy in this case. The rate of the LFO goes faster than any other analog synth I’ve used and allows for the creation of unique timbres. I find it shines best when paired with a sampler. As you suggested the monologue is probably the more practical choice these days, the slim keys are actually some of my favorite on a synth, however, I keep my monotribe for the immediacy, portability, kitsch drums (that hit hard when distorted/overdriven), sample and hold and nostalgia.
@AudioPilz2 жыл бұрын
The LFO on this is so nice!

It's worth mentioning that after firmware update 2.1, the Monotribe's synth part can be externally triggered using CV/Gate via Sync In jack (no mods required). All that's needed is the proper TRRS splitter cable, connected to Sync In. Works great with the BSP, Keysteps and Microbrute. The only downside is that you lose Sync In capabilities when using this feature - not a big deal if you're using it mainly as a synth (no drums), otherwise just use it as sync master. Also the clicks can be smoothed out by adding a capacitor between two easily accessible points on the PCB.

Aaaand another real gem in the series! Also, your jams are real gems (haha), as usual! The Monotribe is a future classic, I'm quite sure about it. Well, the clicky envelope sucks ass big time, it's a true nightmare... Luckily, there's an easy mod for softening it and getting rid of the awful clicks which is a must-do for anyone who actually want to make music with the Tribe. Once I read about this mod I immediately applied it on mine: life is waaaayy better since then! Aaaand also the first time I'm submitting some criticism: Hey, you forgot to mention and/or to explore the CV/GATE mode which has been the biggest upgrade of the Monotribe by miles, added by firmware update 2.11 in 2013 (or 2015?) When played or sequenced by devices which use a single combo-jack socket for cv and gate output, only a simple TRRS to TRRS jack cable is needed which then goes into the Tribe's Sync In. When using devices with more traditional separate cv and gate outputs, two 3.5 mm jack cables and a small TRRS jack to 2x TRS sockets breakout dongle is needed, commonly used (and shipped) with PC headsets. I'm using mine with the latter wireup, playing & sequencing the Tribe by a Keystep or a Monostation. Works like a charm, you really should have tried it.
@noiseborg2 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: If your Monotribe has the MIDI mod AND device firmware 2.11 installed, it can act as a CV to MIDI converter as well. :)

I use it with an SQ-1 and can control it with midi over USB. There is a sweet spot with fast LFO enabled on the osc that sounds like a scary human voice with the filter/res just right that is mind blowing.
@SouthShoreSonics2 жыл бұрын
Great video! Preaching to the choir as I have 6 of these. Not sure if you mentioned the CV control over this which is my preferred method of control. Other less mentioned MOD on Modwiggler are the VCO MUTE MOD, so you mute the oscillator to have resonant noise minus a tone, or the other mod is CV control over cutoff frequency. About 5 years ago I took 4 of these and made a four voice polytribe. With the CV Filter Cutoff mod this allows you to use an external envelope of say a Microbrute to sweep the filter with a sustain level. By gating the VCA full on, you can then get release as you set the filter to act as low pass gate.

Great episode again! Monotribe prices heading north after this one. Hirotribe interest increasing too. Hope Korg are taking lessons. The clicky envelope release kills my joy for the Monotribe. Classic bad gear! It's freaking awesome but with a few huge flaws.

Thanks! Yup, I assume it was limited on purpose

I had two of them alongside the Montron Delay. Could've been my first hardware overall. When the firmware-update came, I was blown away. Still didn't add MIDI of course. I kind of liked the thing but did not really do anything else than generic Acid with no variation whatsoever... - Decided to sell both units for around 100 european credits each. Years later I wondered and searched ebay...that was the moment I hated people. Still haven't gotten over that. Seeing the prices in your video: at the time I looked for it again, it was double that amount.

I liked the Korg Monotribe and had the Midi-interface from “Amazing Machines”, which was very easy to install. A limited Korg MS-20 kinda sound and a small drummachine alla KR-55 in one desktop…. That is a great combo. I remember using Monotribe live on stage for improvising. Basically starting the recording and roll a finger back/forth on the ribbon a few times and you maybe have something interesting [Like rolling a dice]

Yeah, it can be quite random

I have one, and love it. I think it sounds better than the ms20 😬 there's just something about the sequencer that makes it really fun to play with.

It certainly got that MS20 flavor
