Train with me and Icy Mike at Hard Ready this year! Register your spot here - fittofight.com...
Icy Mike from ‪@hard2hurt‬ channel here on KZbin, sucks at Jiu-Jitsu (his words, not mine), which led to a discussion of what submissions exist from bad positions, particularly bottom side control. I just so happen to have several of those, so I was happy to show him some in this video. Hope these are helpful, or at least the video is entertaining.
If you aren't following ‪@hard2hurt‬ then you need to do that as soon as you finish watching this video!

Speaking as a striker, Eli is right. If a boxing match -- with all its artificial rules and protections -- qualifies as a fight, then so does a jiu jitsu match -- even with all its artificial roles and protections. Eli -- I really dig your stuff. All us strikers would really appreciate it if you would do a video on all the submissions that have entries from a standing position. A few times in free sparring I've been able to go from my blend of JKD/Wing Chun/boxing into a standing guillotine, triangle, darce, kimura, and standing RNC and its a really satisfying way to finish an engagement. I'd love to be able to do it a little more scientifically. Thanks. Please keep making the great stuff.

I firmly believe BJJ matches are fights. If there is no tap then an arm, knee, ankle, wrist or shoulder would snap. The person would pass out from the choke. Completely making the person unable to fight back effectively. It’s using leverage instead of blunt force trauma
@PaladinJackal
@PaladinJackal 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Saying BJJ matches aren't fights at all just because your not getting hit is dumb. My Dad coached one of his BJJ students in a MMA fight where without getting hit he shot in took the guy down and subbed him. No strikes from either one of them. Was that MMA match not a fight because no one got hit? Just something I think about when people say BJJ isn't at all fighting.

@@BobBob-il2ku Is that the only metric? To play devil's advocate, in that case it's less of a fight if two defensively sound guys are fighting each other under the same ruleset as two guys who just want to swang and bang. Or if you just happen to have a terrible ref in an MMA fight is just magically becomes more of a ref because the chance of injury has arbitrarily shot up.

@@BobBob-il2ku not exactly in my opinion you can be hurt really bad in multiple ways in BJJ you can hurt your arm,shoulders, ribs, back, or long recovery from knee surgeries and the worst very rare cases you can dislocate your spine and get paralyzed most likely by accident,, the difference is bjj is a martial art also not just an sport like boxing, the respect that if you tap your opponent let go so you can keep training and competing there’s not blows to the head except slaps in combat jj but in boxing is 12 rounds with lots of blows to the head that can cause long term brain damage and concussion over concussion if you get up before the 10 count and get KTFO that’s brutal. But if you life depends on it Jiu jitsu is obviously a fight you can kill someone with a choke or break his bones. As a sport it can be called a match or fight whatever you like better.

Ive gone back and forth about the fight/not a fight thing with grappling. People will snap your shit if you don't tap and some will snap your shit even if you do. The training, knowledge, and dedication of top level grapplers is just as intense as top level strikers. I still dont know if I consider BJJ matches as fights but I acknowledge the points of the argument.

I totally agree that if a boxing match is a fight, a sub-only match is a fight. Both are combat orientated competitions that ignore/ban certain techniques. In boxing, you can only strike above the waist and if somebody falls to a knee the action is paused. They are not punished for going to an inferior position. In jiu-jitsu, I can tackle you and attempt to rip your ligaments/break your bones in order to get you to quit. However, if I strike you, I get disqualified.. It'd be interesting if you put out a full video on the topic. It'll definitely get engagement with everybody brawling in the comments. :P

I would argue that BJJ matches are not fights. If I give my BJJ opponent bruises, concussions, and broken bones, I get banned from competition. If I give my boxing opponent bruises, concussions, and broken bones, I get congratulated. In fights, inflicting acute damage is how you win. The competitors set out to hurt each other. In matches, they don't. For example: Point karate has matches, Karate Combat has fights.

There are way more rules in boxing matches than Jiu-Jitsu matches. It is legal to break bones in Jiu-Jitsu matches. It’s also legal to choke someone. Both are restricted, rule-based fighting competitions…it’s just that you’re allowed to do way more in Jiu-Jitsu than in boxing.

@@KnightJiuJitsu While you are technically allowed to break bones if your opponent refuses to tap, your goal isn't actually to break their bones, and it's very rare that that happens. You're *technically* allowed to break people's bones in a lot of sports. You can break someone's bones in football by tackling them. I've seen people break their arms while arm wrestling. But neither of those are fights. Because the injuries are uncommon and are not the objective. Neither side wants injuries to happen. Boxers want injuries to happen and intentionally make them happen. BJJ practitioners don't want injuries, they want a tap. I don't think we can judge it by the number of rules. Arm wrestling has a lot less rules than BJJ, but that's certainly not a fight. I think it's much more about the quality of the rules. I'd much rather get tapped out than punched in the face.
@ArmchairViolence
@ArmchairViolence 2 жыл бұрын
@@KnightJiuJitsu I think intention is the big difference. I was at an IKF muay thai/kickboxing points tournament yesterday, where you could be disqualified for knocking your opponent out or hitting too hard. That wasn't a fight either. If tapping didn't exist, I think BJJ would count as a fight.

I don't think BJJ matches are fights and I'm a BJJ guy. In a fight you're going in with the mentality of causing damage to your opponent until you win. In a BJJ match you're playing a game with your opponent to get them into a submission that has the threat of causing damage. That doesn't make BJJ any less of a combat sport but it does make hobbiests like myself much more willing to compete.

It's so obvious from this video that Icy Mike is clearly a KZbin black belt, and Eli is just not.

boxing matches look like fights, there is no way to win without violently damaging your opponent. I can win a BJJ match with just positioning and a submission which is pain compliance. The opponent has to agree to quit. In boxing i dont need your compliance to knock you out and hurt you.
