People would be shocked if they tested their home water as well. It’s been crap for 50 years & has needed more & more treatment & filtration. My mom distilled all our tap water used for consumption & we lived in a Midwest town. I use a Berkey & never stick my feet in any of our stream or rivers I used to be able to wade & swim in as a kid. Corporate & factory farms have destroyed our safe water.

I agree with you, when I moved to Georgia. I couldn't narrow down why I was getting stomach aches. Come to find out, it was the tap water. I buy bottle water because filters are expensive over time. Or, I boil my water first before drinking it. Brushing teeth is fine, but drinking a glass of water in Georgia, is out of the question unless you boil or filter, or buy bottled water.

Robin, you always go above and beyond. I live in a small farming village. On our farm, we have always had a well but we filter three times and our water has never been bad or had a bad smell. We watch because our neighbors down the road about 5 miles had a bad incident with their well years ago. It went bad and their daughter contracted typhoid fever. It was awful. We get a state mandated water report from the city with the results of testing the wells and water sources here every other month. I will read it a little more carefully next time around.

Last year on my way home from one of my visits I decided to check this place out for future use. The area is beautiful and the sites seem spacious. But dang, had no idea campground or any water could be so sketchy. Several residents where my Mom lives camp their on a regular basis. I will for sure pass on the info to them. Brilliant. Talk about a major public service announcement! I’m not one to be cynical or suspicious, but honestly, one has to be aware of one’s environment and ask yourself, “Is there anything about this water (food, gas, location, person, whatever) that isn’t quite right?” And if the answer is, “yes!” then follow up, find out, and adjust course to protect yourself! Well done, Robin! And, as usual, presented in a clear, organized fashion. Thank you!

I’m so glad you brought this to light as water is crucial for our bodies! We are almost 70% water. Clean water is the most important thing for inside and outside the body. I’ve been to many parks and campsites where the water is gross. Thankful for my berkey too. Bummed that now we have to boil the water before putting it through but … again healthy clean water is the only way to go.

Great public service announcement Robin! My first house had well water. I was 600 feet from a medium priority superfund site, and was not made aware of this by the realtor. I'll spare you the ugly details, and just say: well water - never again. And who the heck puts their poop tube up to a public water source?! Nasty! Buy a gallon sprayer, fill it with bleach, dish detergent, and water, and clean the tube at the dump station. If you don't want something like that done to your water source, don't do it to others! 🤗 Rest in peace, Big Boy 🤗

For anyone camping in the American Southwest in particular, get a water softener and filter EVERY DROP with at least two kinds of filters (we use four). The ones sold at Walmart and most RV centers are mostly useful for removing sediment, nothing much else. It's a good first line of defense. Second, use a water softener to protect your plumbing. Third, use a solid carbon filter. Second, sanitize or replace your hose at least annually. We use quick disconnects on our hoses. not only does this permit fast attach/detach, when you are done, it's easy and convenient to connect the two ends together, preventing varmints and filth from getting inside the hose. Third, maintain your system, and this includes testing your system. Fourth, use entirely different hoses for anything associated with the sewer system. In any piping system, under any condition, fluid flows in both directions. There's a majority and a minority flow, which means some water flows against the current.

Thanks for the video, Robin. This is the very reason that I recently bit the bullet and invested in a Blu Tec MR3 triple water filter. I have always been concerned with water quality in locations while traveling. I have only been traveling for a little over a year, and I hauled a lot of bottled water for drinking, coffee, and other consumption. The weight got to be too much, and the cost was an ongoing expense. Now I feel confident that I am getting clean drinking water. I plan to get some test kits from Amazon to test my water randomly. Trust-But Verify! Travel Safe, Be Well and keep up the Good Work!

Excellent! Make sure you never ever drink water from your RV freshwater tank. If you must, run it through a verified filter system. I have heard to Burkees are good but I don’t have any experience with that so do your own research. Personally I always kept fresh drinking water in a bpa-free (there are there promise with that too) container with a spigot next to my sink and used that for my dog’s water dish and my cooking and own drinking. I had my freshwater tank spring a leak I’m on my trips and Mobile Rv mechanic replaced it. Was so glad I was not drinking from it because it was lined with mold and green stuff. Scary. If you’re using water right from the campground source into your RV sink bypassing your tank, just make sure in advance it’s good water.

I stayed at a small home. Unknown to me, there had been a gas station 50 yards away. The old tanks were resting on the ground. This was near Ft. Steward were the water table very close to the surface. One day it rained very heavy. The well water started to smell like gasoline. We did have a filter on our faucet, but it smelled like gasoline, and it was! The tanks had leaked into the ground. After heavy rain, it would get into the drinking water! It went away when things dried out. When in doubt, test. Ronald Regan said "Trust, but Verify"!

This is such an important topic. Great recommendation to spray the water spigot at all RV parks with a very good disinfectant cleaner (i.e., Clorox Clean-Up Cleaner + Bleach) and we need to make sure it sanitizes, disinfects, and cleans, otherwise you could be missing out. Please make sure that you spray the spigot with a lot of liquid product. Do not wipe it off right away! ALL disinfectants need time to get rid of germs, viruses, and other crud. Read the label, it will tell you how long to keep it on before you wipe it off. Apply the same time frame practice to your kitchen and bath cleaning too. I think most of us don't clean correctly.

Thanks for posting this video. Those tests are a great idea. High sulfur levels will make the water taste like rotting eggs. E-coli can send you to the hospital! When I finally get my rig, I’m planning to install a 3-stage filter so my drinking water is healthy. I had a house with a well and I tested the water regularly. I had a high non-fecal e-coli with one test. That means it was leaf and soil matter leaching through from the soil above the 200ft deep well. The local health district required me to install an ultraviolet treatment device to remedy the problem. All this, and the water tasted great and never made me or my kids sick. I used to work for a water testing and treatment firm. You wouldn’t believe what’s in the water in some places!!

I have a filter canister that I put between the city water and my trailer. I have been interested in an under sink treatment like Acuva, although a Burkey is a simple non mechanical solution that would also work. People up the valley from my house have a lot of arsenic and other contamination in their wells which I think is a legacy of all the mining activities in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s. The government did a Superfund cleanup of one of the mine tailings that was leaching into the two local rivers that the creeks go into. A lot of people fish them, but I wouldn’t eat those fish. I imagine that Colorado and other western states are going to have similar issues with water from wells, or some rivers. I remember a recent story where runoff from oil production was going into the White, or Green river in Utah which goes into the Colorado. There also was a lot of Uranium mining in Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Gold mining uses Cyanide and gold mines are everywhere. Coal ponds occasionally contaminate water in West Virginia, but 100-200 years ago coal was mined in a lot of places where people now live. There is an issue with suburbs being built above old coal mines south of Seattle. I never assume water is good and carry a portable filter just in case when traveling.

p.s., the Berkey does not remove Total Dissolved Solids. That was most of our issue in those two places.

I would NEVER use water anywhere unless it's bottled. Especially in rv parks. I've worked in quite a few, and can tell ta now, they don't care most times. Even house water in a neighborhood is normally filled with chemicals and such. Sulfur and iron are common in well water also. Just buy your water if you plan to drink or cook with it. Showering should be ok, but filters are necessary. Be careful out there, and thanks for all your informative vids!

We saw the sewer hose thing within our first year of owning a TT (almost 9 years ago), and have been using disinfecting wipes ever since. I got a bacterial infection 2 years ago...we filled our fresh tank at a state park in the Midwest. It went thru our basic filter, but we knew it wasn't enough. I didn't think about it, used that water to brush teeth. Sicker than I'd ever been. We have a better filter now for incoming water and also use bottled water. Hard lesson. Thank you for your great info& insights. Appreciated!

Great video. Good information. Thanks for posting this. And, good golly, did I start laughing when I saw your big game catch - deer? bear? - above you, on your wall. That is excellent!

My husband and I live in our fifth wheel in a park in the Central Valley of California. Our park is on a well. The water is very high in minerals (hard water) so we are using several methods to clean and soften the water. Since we are full time in place right now, it’s working. I cannot imagine having to lug these (2) water softeners around everywhere we go! Our drinking water is separate from our house water thankfully.

Wow! Totally disgusted now. Putting bleach spray in the outside compartment to spray on the water faucet going forward. Thank you for the information. My daughter lives in a mobile home park here in MD. The water is horrible and they can’t get the state, County or city to help. On a separate note! I saw you’re going to be in Hershey at the RV show coming up. Looking forward to meeting you!

I bought a portable water filtration bottle after seeing this, Robin. I was on the fence but this pushed me over. I don’t have room for a Berkey in my rig (and even they’re facing legal issues) so I went with something I could take hiking too.
