Years ago I was driving a lorry down a country road in Kent. In front of me was a tractor towing a slurry tank which like your drain cleaning lorry was leaving a very smelly trail behind it. I was keeping a distance from if when a white open top car passed me and pull in to the space between me and the tractor. It's one of those little things that you always remember.

I totally agree with you bring up the two second rule. I was going to say that its not a rule as such but it is quoted in the Highway Code, rule 126, as a guide to keeping a good separation. I would alsk add to tcat clip that the car stopped far too cluse to you. You should always leave a gap between you and the car ahead suchvthat you can see their tyres and a bit of the road- hence the expression- 'tyre and tarmac'. If you stop too close and the car behind stops too close then you are hemmed in and have no means of escape in an emergency or if the car ahead breaks down.
@ianmason.2 ай бұрын
A better rubric than "tyres and tarmac" is "stop while you can still see the *_whole_* vehicle", or if you prefer "tyres to top", because that also deals with things like waggons and buses which you need to be further back from to give you some vision past the vehicle.
@johncranna94272 ай бұрын
@ianmason. Yes. Tyres and tarmac applies mainly to other cars, for larger vehicles you need to use a common sense approach.

I’m old and I want to stay alive as long as possible! I was on the A4 this morning, on the section that runs under the M4 where there is only 1 lane for a short time. I had an idiot flashing me from behind, wanting me to speed up, when I was already doing the 40mph speed limit. I don’t know where he expected me to go to get out of his way. 15:38, it's not just road markings, but a white arrow on blue together with the traffic light which has a green arrow. That's a must turn right. The right lane before the junction is clearly for a right turn only into the carpark. Yes there are two lanes ahead, but you should only select one of the two lanes once you've gone through the junction from the left lane.
@robertblair-uk4ph2 ай бұрын
Absolutely. I use this poxy one way system daily. The right lane, is car park only as per the road markings and the lights. The left lane goes left towards the hospital, and the middle lane, splits between the two sets of lights. So to use the right lane to continue back round to the high street, you move over once you've cleared the carpark.

Drivers should drive with due care and attention while reading many signs in small writing containing access restrictions, a breach of which will result in a financial penalty being assessed. Being new to the area is no excuse for not slowing right down in rush hour to read the signs. Being rear-ended because you slowed down to read the signs will place you at fault. Thank you for being a tax-paying, law-abiding road user while observing cyclists not doing the same. Have a nice day.

Here in NZ, bus lanes and cycle lanes are both classed as special vehicle lanes. They require signage no more than 100m apart, and signage to indicate the beginning and end. If cycle lanes do not have the signage they need to have No Stopping road markings (broken yellow lines here, the equivalent of double yellow lines in the UK), otherwise, parking in the cycle lanes is not enforceable. It is also permitted to drive in the cycle lane if passing a vehicle waiting to turn right, and it is safe to do so.

For some people, tailgating is a way of life. I came up on some slower traffic today, 40 mph on a 60 mph road; a car, with a taxi and a large van both almost in it's boot - less than a car's length apart. The front car signals to turn off, but the taxi is loath to slow down or move out - and missed the rear bumper by nothing. SO; the road in front is clear, the taxi is going to take off at speed, right?? No; the taxi kept going at the same speed as the car that had turned off - 40 mph on a 60 mph road. Now, the taxi had a pink company logo, dopes that mean the driver was a girl?? These days it is hard to tell. BTW, after 5 minutes, we reached a 30 mph village - neither slowed down; in my mind, that makes them apprentice Volvo drivers (40 mph regardless of the actual speed limit).

@lesliefraser-u5j2 ай бұрын
I drove in Germany for thirteen years , they don't have a highway code. They have a highway law, so if you do something wrong you're fined on the spot. Cyclists riding outside a cycle lane are summarily fined and it's like crucifixion if you go through a red light cyclists included. But then the German police are more visible.

I have said what needs to be said previously and I have my reasons why I believe it is wrong to say it I will say the solid lines on bike lanes have been around for years and you even referenced one of them in your video as they can be combined with bus lanes. Most of the time they are on roads where there is sufficient space for cyclists and drivers to share but I would recommend giving space as much as you can when passing as, although “in their own lane”, there could still be potholes and debris that needs to be avoided Remember that the cycle lanes with broken lines still shouldn’t be driven in unless absolutely necessary and in either case cyclists have absolute priority in a cycle lane 👍

I don't think I explained the cycle lane very well, what I meant was I haven't seen one in the style of a bus lane i.e cameras on a bike lane ready to fine you if you go in it, yes I've seen bike lanes before with solid lines but not with cameras on.

@@thelondondashcamUnderstood 👍 I assume they are the standard London Borough cameras that will catch you sneezing and wiping your nose with the sleeve cuff instead of a tissue in which case they have been around for a while, ever since local councils in London were given power over minor traffic offences like yellow box infringements or stopping on a red route. I suspect more and more will appear as council budgets continue to be stretched more and more Speaking of stopping on a red route, a little PSA for you and all. If your car breaks down on a red route and you are able to repair it yourself…don’t. I did many yesrs ago when the car went into limp mode and needed to be reset, ended up with a FPN that wouldn’t be rescinded. I did ask the council if I should block the bus lane while I wait up to two hours for recovery and they said “Yes”. So apparently waiting for paperwork is more important than keeping the red route clear 🤷🏻♂️

Yet again, you deliberately misunderstand Tony: he didn't say "pay for the roads", he said " pay to USE the roads", in other words, MOT, insurance, lessons, test, licence. Things that all users of mechanically propelled vehicles HAVE to pay for to be on the public highway.

@@alanclarke4646 No deliberate misunderstanding at all. If you read my comment you will see that I wrote how it can be _perceived_ when these things are said with annoyance at cyclists or cycling infrastructure

With common sense levels being as low as they are now might be a good time to start re-showing some of those old public information films.
