If you guys haven't already found out, the martial art in these films is a variation of silat. Iko Uwais (Rama) and Yayan Ruhian (Mad Dog) did the fight choreography together, and Ruhian had also had a history as a fight trainer for the Indonesian Police. True badasses!

This is a relatively unknown film in the US, partly because american audiences generally don't like to watch foreign movies with subtitles. That's why even a lot of film and action fans like you haven't heard of it. But it's actually really influential. This came out in 2011 and if you watch action films before that, there's a trend for shaky, close up camera shots and many quick cuts, influenced by the Bourne films and Taken. After The Raid 1&2 came out, there's a noticeable shift in the way action is shot, with a lot less cuts, wider angles and a desire to show more of the stuntwork and more of what's actually happening. The John Wick series is an example. John Wick director Chad Strahelski said that he's a big fan of the The Raid guys' work and it's no coincidence that two of the final bosses of Wick 3 are Yayan Ruhian, who plays Mad Dog in The Raid 1 and Prakoso in The Raid 2, as well as Cecep Arif Rahman, who's basically the final boss of The Raid 2. It may not be known by as many people as it deserves to be, but certainly everyone got to feel their influence.

The hallway fights in Daredevil were inspired by the hallway fights in this movie, the top down combo shot in Shang Chi was inspired by the one from this movie, the knife fights and flexible weapons in John Wick Chapter 3 were inspired by the fights here. Incredibly influential action film that not a lot of people have even heard of. You may recognize the two bodyguards as the guys who let John Wick live at the end of the third movie because they were fans, who he then let live in return after he bodyslammed them through glass floor. That's probably why they looked familiar to Answer. If I'm not mistaken Cecep actually trained Keanu Reevs for those knife fights and is one of the highest ranked martial artists in Silat. Another actor you may recognize is Joe Taslim was Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat, and in a phenomenal cinemax kung-fu show you should check out called Warrior.

THIS movie is lethal. No dramatic posing...no air grabbin' symbolism. Just...kickass ACTION! You would think that the human body would just stop functioning after so many bone crushing blows. Stamina must be off the charts...talk about super soldier serum. If Captain America fought like this...DAY am! Must admit.. ALL these players are artists...pure mayhem and great visuals. The action sells the impact and the knife skills. Bravo! Refreshing to see you lads get schooled on the International offerings for action. Raid 2 is just as dynamic.

You might saw the villain mad dog from john wick 4 movie. Also you guess correctly the actor are mostly martial artist with some being a master of silat (indonesian traditional martial art). You wont see silat that often in western media specially in mma match due to its ferocity clashing to UFC rule.

0:56 As a watch nerd (who owns that same Hamilton X-Mach), watching Mason mistake it for an S-Force was torturous.

The reason why the choreography is awesome is because Jaka (the MC) and Mad Dog are actually silat practitioner in real life. Iko Uwais aka Jaka is actually silat practitioner and silat champion. Weirdly enough, he was a truck driver before being recruited as actor by gareth evans,.Yayan Ruhian aka Mad Dog, was a silat practitioner and used to be instructor for Paspamres (President's bodyguard unit), so you know he is the real deal.

30:00 I'm indonesian and the translation is correct though one small mistake which I think makes the meaning of the english sub more timid. He said, "And what would it mean to you..." but I think the better translation would be, "And I want to see his face...". And then he says, "...if you were to die in front of him." but I think a better translation on what he said is, "...if I were to saw/slit your throat in front of him.". Makes him even more menacing imo.

I feel like for a lot of these guys this was their breaktrough movie. I've spotted a lot of them in movies that came after this like John Wick.

This is what you get when you have people at the helm who know their shit. Shoutout to all the boys in the film who put their bodies on the line. Even the random henchmen are excellent in this

This film emphasizes silat martial arts movements. The principle of fighting is to exploit the opponent's weak points quickly with the aim of paralyzing the opponent until he is helpless. All the techniques he has only have one goal, namely to survive and kill the opponent. The martial art of silat is more than effective and deadly and even seems cruel. that's why professional MMA fighting bans it. although its professional use is only among the Indonesian military for close combat situations. sometimes it looks beautiful in art shows. everyone knows that films are just dramatic images

The story about how this movie was made in the first place is a whole lot more interesting than you thought. Some Welsh filmaker (Gareth Evans) set his foot in Indonesia to do documentaries about Pencak Silat (The martial art form used in this movie). Get sidetracked by how great it is. Then decided to start his filmaking carrier with those amaizing indonesian folks hes been working with there. Lots of big action stuffs you've probably seen such as John Wick, Extraction and Deadpool took notes or inspiration from The Raid. Oh yeah now that i've mentioned John Wick. Remember those 2 proud henchman from JW 3 that John left alive? Those two were actors from The Raid and one of them is that Mad Dog guy you saw here

As I’m sure has already been said many times over: Dredd (2012) is the “western remake” in many ways, and for more hallway fights see “Oldboy” (either one), which in turn inspired scenes in “Repo” and the show “Daredevil”, not to mention “Snowpiercer” (tho a train is sort of just one big a hallway so unavoidable parallels). Think that sums it up

The Raid 2 is insane. Insanely great. I cannot say enough good things about it and this film. Please watch it as soon as you can!

You guys did recognize Mad Dog, who was in John Wick 3, but one of the guys he killed was played by Joe Taslim, the cop who got his neck snapped, and he was in Fast & Furious 6 and was Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat. This movie is so monumental in the action genre that quite a few of the actors got significant Hollywood roles after.

The guy who played jaka is actually in a lot of hollywood movies like one of the star trek and fast and furious movies. The guy who played mad dog is in one of the jon wick movies. And the guy who played rama is in one of the expendables movies. This is from what i remember

actually it's quite easy to find people who can do stunts like that in Indonesia, I went to my relative's place three times, he took me to look around his house, almost every village has at least one place for learning martial arts.
