Following on from last week’s video on serving in men’s doubles, this week is all about the return of serve! Hopefully you find these videos useful as we give lots of actionable tips throughout (and maybe your partner might find it useful too - so why not share it with them 😜) We’ve got some exciting videos coming up, including the final Men’s Doubles video in this series and also a giveaway (👀) so make sure you smash the subscribe button so you don’t miss them! Finally, a shoutout to the German Badminton Assocation for letting us film this video on the practice courts in the Hylo Open arena as we missed our flight back home (and therefore missed our usual KZbin filming slot 😆)!

This video is so great! The part at 6:50 where you explained the spaces around the court opening up after using certain kinds of return and their impact on both of the opponents is so insightful. This might have been the video I've been waiting for! Also your adjustment to intermediate level, where people are often not explosive enough to play everything downwards, is very helpful! One tip I can give to these players is practice your flick returns. The better you get at returning flick returns, the further forward you can stand, which is probably the biggest factor in playing a good Doubles return 👍

Net, straight down the sideline or middle. 1:10 If they serve to the middle or body, return down the sideline (power can vary) to set up your partner's forehand. Hit down, move the racket leg forward. Move across to take the cross while your partner takes the straight with their forehand. Should they lift, your partner gets it. You should focus on the front court, especially any cross. 3:49 When receiving a weak serve, return down to the middle. Your team can move forward, with you can cover the suitable (more dominant, predicted, etc) side. 5:04 To hit down, use a short swing, fingers. 5:42 A flexible option is to return with a net straight, cross or to the middle. Be explosive, keep your racket facing forward and use a short swing.

Practising these tomorrow. As I'm a senior, playing with other seniors a fast flat clear to corners tends to make them stand back more. Then the mid court slow push starts to really puts pressure on.
@boliusabol8222 жыл бұрын
To commenter "meekins", If you can do a fast flat clear as a return to a low serve then you must be a real magician able to do the impossible, 'cos a clear is a shot played when the shuttle is high and from the back of the court.. Maybe you mean a lift. I wonder if there is any material out there for beginner badminton players that teach them correct terminology so they know the difference between a lift and a clear , and many beginners mix up between a drop and a net shot.. I find a lot of beginner badminton players mix their terms up.
@davidgrantmeekins85772 жыл бұрын
@@boliusabol822 Apologies for my misuse of language. However as you will not I use the word FLAT so this cannot be a lift. Perhaps I should have used the word push or drive as better describing the shot. Whenever I play this shot it is rarely even above head height. Also please note not many 'beginners' have won regional titles in Spain in both singles an doubles. I'm just an old player who can sometimes mix up words.

Great tips! Although personally I tend to stay about 3/4 way to the service line and closer to the middle of the court since my movement sucks and it's hard for me to return a flick or drive serve. 3/4 way to the service line is my sweet spot right now since I have enough time to react to either of those serve while I always return low serves without sacrificing too much quality of shot (I'd say about it's 80-90% quality) unless it's obviously short. Confidently staying near the service line is one of my goals this year :) Edit 1: I think in a non competitive environment (regular play without tournament/reward/contest etc.) it also baits the other team into playing a serve to where I am opposite at 🤣. I mentioned I position myself 3/4 of the way to the service line and lean towards the center so most serves I receive is a low serve or a flick serve opposite of my position. This kinda helps me since I can kind of predict that they will serve there and also help me improve my movement since i'll be moving to the opposite side fast 😄

Love all your videos. I think this advice will be difficult to incorporate into our games though. Our level is beginner and we don't all serve this way (sometimes often just lifting on serve), which would be a problem for us when prepared for a short serve. I guess advanced players would punish such a serve. So I'll just try to improve my footwork to counter this. Just something I'd be asking a coach about.
@badmintontips_de7 ай бұрын
Which position do you recommend (when receiving the serve) for the partner of the returner and why? With many amateur players I see an almost parallel position to the returner. In my opinion, this is wrong. I recommend that the partner takes a position close to or above the centre line and just behind the returner in order to take a quick offensive position. Not identical, but similar to the position of the serving pair.

One of my issues is that have a reasonably low receive stance (does help a bit with drive serves) and when approaching the net I stay too low hence it's harder to get 'on top' of the shuttle to play it downwards. (Need to rise up a bit e.g. look at how Kevin plays his deceptive return) Too many years with a bad habit...but at least I know the problem and can *try* to address it!

Good advice, but its hard for amateurs to move forward quickly and do a netshot like that - but then these kind of strategies is kind of for more advanced players as the middle shot is so hard to do on a perfect serve and its hard for ppl to stand so close to the service line
