Hello Neeko, this video has been very informative and well thought out. Now for a question. I have a Frey bike circa 2018 with a Bafang M600 motor. I am getting the impression that 1: Frey used a Dengfu frame? and due to its age, 2: the motor must be a UART protocol? What confused me is this 2018 era M600 has a green trianglular 5 pin connector, which is often referred to as found on CANBUS systems. Last, you mention is is probably possible to get by without the need for any software and associated tools for the UART based motors. Which is apparently a good thing because it seems you can get opensource software and cables for the BBS motors. But 3: does the equivalent exist for the M600 and similar that may have been UART systems?

Hi there, sincere apologies for the delay. In answer to your question, the M600 is CANBus protocol. meaning that the Besst Tool would be needed to update and/or upgrade the firmware (depending on your preferences). I have experimented with some of the M600 firmware. Personally I prefer the "*CRX10NC4818i132046.9-28-2230-20220315.bin* firmware, which allows the M600 to push over 20amps to achieve the 120NM of torque far more easily. However, some have preferred a more milder feel for the M600. So changing the firmware (whereby it uses less maximum current), has been an option for a lot of riders. Frey however, are no strangers to using custom firmware on their ebikes. So I'm unable to confirm what firmware your are using, compared to what firmware I have tried. However, I did see a custom firmware from Luna Cycles which allowed for parameters to be changed in accordance with the app and display. I think the firmware was labelled, *luna_x1_firmware__74963.bin* . I'm sure that if you google that firmware (and you know someone who has the Besst Tool and an account with Bafang), it will allow you similar parameter tuning to a UART Bafang motor. @@neekodevinchi Thanks for the response, which is encouraging in thoroughness and speed! So turns out I was wrong in assuming my 5 year old M600 is UART. I'm thinking I'll overhaul my M600 as a winter project. I used your link to GreenBikeKit and they tell me that if I am just replacing gears and bearings I should not need to use the Besst Tool afterwards. Now that I'm on this train of thought, I'm also considering converting my Cannondale Trigger 29er with a kit, and trying to decide if I can live without torque sensing or not.

I have an ebike that came with a bafang M600 and a 40T chainring. To change to 36T, is it necessary to calibrate the new size using BESST UART?

No. Motor calibration is only necessary to reposition the sensors within the motor, to determine which way is forward. The only time you need to perform a calibration is if you have changed firmware, changed the controller or replaced any of the internal mechanical components within the motor. Simply changing the chainring size doesn't require calibration👍🏿

Sincere apologies for the delay. The voltage parameters are fixed to each firmware. So in order to have a different voltage (minimum and maximum cutoff), you'll need to change the firmware (bin file). It's not like uart, where you can amend those values. Which motor are you trying to change the voltage? I might be able to navigate you to the appropriate firmware to install👍🏿

At what mileage should the M600 engine be serviced and lubricated?

It depends. Their's no set mileage which Bafang suggests performing a motor service. Usually, a service is reccomended once/if the motor acts irregularly. E.g. The M600s can require a main reduction gear and one-way needle bearing swap if the motor sounds rough when pedalling. I've serviced motors with over 2000miles. And I've serviced motor with only 50miles. But the culprit which warrants the service can vary. My main advice is, if the motor in anyway feels different whilst operating from when it was new. Then it's a sign that it needs to be looked into. If you require any assistance or guidance, please let me know. And I'll happily look into it for you👍🏿

Hi there, You have options. However, I'd need to know what display and communication protocol your M620 motor ie using. If it's UART, you have the DZ41, SW02, Eggrider v2, 500c & 600c. If it's CANBus, you have the DZ41, dpc245.3, 600c or, SW02 (to name a few). Thank you for the video. I have a question or a request for your advice. I have a Vitus full suss from Chain Reaction. Only done 50miles. Has the M510 motor. And the head unit will no longer power on and the bike will not start. I bought a new head unit. Still nothing. Battery is fully charged. What are your thoughts? Would this detect a problem that the 245 display isn't showing as an error? I also have an e-mythique and on longer slow climbs the assist feels Asif it drops to its lowest setting (e) if I cycle through others there is no difference,if I cycle to 0 then you feel zero assist so it's definitely providing some assist Sometimes it'll snap back into power itself,when changing gear or not atol until climb is done.

I see. To answer your first question, the Besst Tool can indicate if the display is the culprit if the bike doesn't turn on. The Besst Tool checks for communications with everything connected. As for the drop in power on your E-Mythique, that's because Vitus tuned the M510 to be...."conservative" instead of harnessing the full power of the M510. Simply increasing the acceleration across all levels of assist (and raising Race Mode to achieve 500%) using the Besst Tool will solve that problem. I would even reduce the start angle from 15° to 7-8° to improve responsiveness of the motor as well. But ultimately, using the Besst Tool would improve your experience of the E-Mythique👍🏿

Setting the speed limit depends on your account. It is not able to set it to 60kmh for standard or offline users.. You'd need to use the bypass for that.

It depends on which software you're using and the firmware installed on the motor. Besst (not Besst Pro) can change the top speed to 60kmh. But newer Bafang Motors with newer controllers are optimised for Besst Pro. Essentially, you'd need to install a firmware so that Besst could change the speed limit to 60kmh. But to do all of this, you would need an account with Bafang👍🏿

Sincere apologies for the delay. The Besst tool can rectify error 36, provided that the remote/cable isn't damaged. But it can't rectify the error code 30. Meaning that somewhere within the wire harness connecting the motor to the display, isn't communicating properly. Try disconnecting the wire harness and reconnecting and ensure that their are no kinks within the cable. Failing that, swapping out the display and wire harness might be the best resolution for yourself. Any problems, please reach out to me via email, Facebook, Instagram etc👍🏿

Hi Neeko I emailed you about two weeks ago and got no response. My Dengfu bike has a Throttle that came programmed from the factory like a race car. It was either on or off. Just the slightest touch of the throttle would send you right off the back of the bike or wheelie uncontrollably . That said I'm looking for some programming help here. I emailed Bafang twice now to purchase the Besst tool and they wont respond. I suspect you have to be a dealer or some big race program director to get this device. Sincere apologies for the delay. Buying the Besst tool isn't difficult and their are safe and trustworthy ways to buy one. GBK (Green Bike Kits) sell them and I've seen multiple merchants on platforms like Alibaba, Aliexpress and even Ebay. The Besst tool should cost no more than £120 ($150/€140). The difficulty is getting an account. Some merchants who sell the Besst tool may share their own account credentials to the buyer. I'll leave a link in the description to GBK's website to purchase the Besst Tool. When ordering, ask them if they will provide you with one of their account logins to use the Besst software & Besst Pro software👍🏿

Agreed John. Bafang will continue to make new motors (some sharing the same mounting positions as current motors available). But the Besst Tool will be necessary for Bafang motors to be tuned, updated and even troubleshooting👍🏿

Support parameter are determined by the firmware. The only way to freely amend parameters for the M600, is to use a third party controller. Otherwise, top speed, wheel size & wheel circumference are the only parameters which can be changed👍🏿

Hi there, Most Bafang hub motors use UART. So it would be easier to configure the controller settings by either using the Bafang config tool and software or using a different display. The easiest way (if the speed restriction is all you wish to change), would be getting a different display like the 500c or DZ41 (B both displays have been featured on my channel). Hope this helps👍🏿

It depends. Bafang motors (CANBus) are now becoming programmable via both the Besst tool and certain displays. As such, my preferences may differ to your own. The best advice would be to use the motor and tune to your liking. E.g. if you want the M820 to respond quicker, reduce the start angle. If you want a certain level of assist to provide more power, increase the max power & if you want more support, increase the acceleration👍🏿

For the E-Mythique? I'd raise the max power to 500% for level 5 (Race Mode) and amend the start angle from 15° to 7-8° for better pedal/responsiveness. You could adjust the acceleration for each of the modes, which will effect motor over-run as well. But essentially, you gain the provisions to tune the motor to your personal liking (like suspension or tyre pressures)👍🏿

Hi Neeko. I'm a desperate 79 year old with decent DIY skills but no real electronic knowledge, who's only transport is a Jorvik JMT7 mountain e-trike. It's powered by an M500 Bafang, or was, until it died on me. I've taken it to 2 local e-bike shops. They both think it's the controller. I've been in contact with at least 5 Bafang 'specialists' all of whom disappear / stop replying to messages (because they can't locate the right Bafang spares?). Please can you help. I just need to get my transport back on the road. I have photos I can send, but if it's not your thing I understand. Desperate David

I have just got that tool, and tried to increase the max speed on my e Mythique, however it knows the max speed for the UK is 15.5mph and won't let me change it, I get a message saying it's about the max speed for my region is there a work around, I have tried both programs but no luck

apologies for the delay. Are you using the Besst Pro and if so, which firmware and controller are you using on the M510 motor? its possible that your M510 motor may need a firmware update/swap. Yes. I have changed firmwares on M510s from 48v - 36v and vice versa. Essentially, the motor won't work if it detects a higher or loeer voltage (Maximum & minimum discharge cut-off)👍🏿

You should be able too. Vitus E-Mythique M510 motors use 'MMG522C3619F802047.1 controllers. So using Besst Pro in offline mode, you'll be able to raise the speed to 20mph max.

With a different firmware, yes. But it's questionable if the motor could achieve higher speeds. Otherwise, it would clash with motors like the M600 and M560. It's worth mentioning that if you want to replace the firmware, you do need an account for Besst Pro👍🏿

This version was stupidly locked down via the canbus protocol so that I can't use the motor with any other battery and vice versa. I haven't been able to find any solution to this. I'm not sure if it is a firmware problem or a controller/bms problem. But I can look into this and share my findings. Ironically, I can only see one firmware associated with the M625. Hi there, In order to load the bin file, you will need the beest tool. A bin file is essentially firmware which configures the controller in the motor. Hi there. Sadly, firmware's associated with the M620 CANBus aren't as plentiful compared to the other Bafang motors. Essentially, different firmware's which I've seen for the M620 CANBus tend to be for higher voltage/capacity batteries. Ebikes like the the FREY Beast with the custom 62v battery use a different firmware. But that particular firmware is useless without a 62v battery. I will doublecheck this with a colleague. So kindly bear with me👍🏿

Bizarre!!! I uploaded a video using my E55 with the Eggrider v2 display and the 52v kilowatt battery. I've not had any issues. But it does need to be programmed to recognise the battery at 100% and 0% (maximum and minimum cutoff). If you bear with me, I can ask Eggrider if there is a problem using the Eggrider v2 with a 52v battery and report back to you👍🏿

I've heard this too. The Bafang display on our m620 reputedly errors-out, if the Voltage is too high (as can the controller); I haven't seen Eggrider or Bafang display revisions specifically for 52V, though? I know people are using them, I'm just not sure how they're being set up?!

Audio is bad, sounds like your in a cupboard, also you don't need music playing while you're talking, it's annoying.
