I started using leaf litter in my aquarium very recently. The main difference I've noticed is that I get a lot of biofilm without really trying, and I do mean a lot! This looks like a good companion to your Bag of Bugs... seems to me the biofilm from one bunch of leaf litter cold keep the water bugs fed indefinitely.

A few weeks ago I added dry oak leaves to my aquariums behind the matten filter. I am hoping that as they break down that they might help feed the plants.
