Had only Baibars had the mercy of the great Saladin, his star would have indeed outshined the star of Saladin!! But then I believe the environment is the main breeder of men's qualities. Baibars's life was a cruel one. Born in the steppes life, lived as a slave and knew nothing but sword and blood for the rest of his days. While Saladin was born into a comfortable life and had an intensive teaching of honor, dignity and religion by the greatest teachers of his time from a very young age before learning the arts of warfare... In my opinion the childhood of both men is what defined their legacies!!
@mindyourbusiness44404 жыл бұрын
Saladin received the best education a man could have at that time. He was raised among the elites and nobles. While Baibars had a cruel childhood since he grew up in the peak of the mongol destruction. Although he also received a high education when he was brought to Egypt, Baibars didn't grew up in a middle of a trusted family and companions like Saladin did so it's understandable why he became what he became.

@@mindyourbusiness4440 Couldn't agree more, in any case both were great men!!
@eldeebcampeador4 жыл бұрын
Aaaaah, what Baibars did was the best way to deal with those bastardly crusaders. With all due respect to Saladin, it was his "mercy" towards certain Crusaders like Balian of Ibelin and Guy De Lusignan, was more than enough to give the Muslims a hard time in the Siege of Jerusalem, the siege of Acre and later the third Crusade. What Baibars did was avoid that silly mistake of allowing the aggressors such gentleness since that was always returned to the Muslims in oath breaking and war. What Baibars did certainly eclipses what Saladin had done. What Saladin did was simply cauterzing a severly infected limb, on the contrary, Baibars cut off that infected limb for good.
@deeipomar23664 жыл бұрын
@@eldeebcampeador Whilst I partially agree with you but I believe Saladin's actions were better and wiser than Baibars's!! Saladin simply simulated the most merciful act done by the prophet Mohamed ever. When he conquered Mecca, prophet Mohamed gave total amnesty to all the people of Mecca and gave mercy to the very individuals who persecuted him and his followers and showed them greatest of torture. Obviously this noble act of the prophet led to more good than harm. Saladin as a pious and religious man simply wanted to copy this act and follow the path of his prophet, showing mercy to your enemy is a unique quality which is one of the definitions of Islam, and Muslims should apply this quality as best they could regardless of the consequences. Anyway that's my opinion and point of view!!

This is great but a few details need adjustment: 1) The army in Damietta was composed mainly of bedouin warriors from a military garrison in Damietta and it was 4,000. They fled Damietta after a few hours of fighting, and the people of Damietta soon followed. Sultan as-Salih had the emirs of the Bedouin army hung for their cowardice. The crusaders suffered few if any casualties in the landing, one being a knight who drowned after misjudging his step from the large nef to a small shallow bottoms landing boat 2) When Salish died, his wife Shajar al durr transferred command of the army to Fakr al-din. Al-Din already had his eyes on the sultanate since he knew as-Salih (the sultan was close to death. Baybars and Qutuz were junior officers at the time and did not receive control of the army, although Baybars did lead the Egyptian counter attack 3) baybars, after the tumultuous decade in mamluk egypt, sought refuge with the rest of his Bahri regiment in Syria under Al Nasir Yusuf Ayyub. But when one of the Ayyubid emirs proposed submitting to the mongols, Baybars attacked him saying “you will cause the ruin of the Muslims!” He and the rest of the the remaining Bahri mamluks returned to Egypt under Qutuz 4) the mamluk army was somewhere between 10-20k strong (probably 12,000) while Ketbugha’s Mongol army was similarly sized. The Mongol army had defeated forces larger than their own in the past so it doesn’t mean much even if the Mamluks were numerically superior 5) the only account of a mamluk feigned retreat or feint is by Mongol historian Rashid Al-Din (probably seeking to discredit the Mamluks as using devious tricks to defeat the “superior” mongols). In reality, the Mamluks were nearly defeated until some ayyubid defectors to the Mongol side decided to abandon the field or change sides mid-battle, and Qutuz led a last desperate charge shouting “oh allah, save your servant Qutuz”. Ketbugha died in the fray and Baybars pursued the fleeing Mongols through Syria and slaughtered them 6) After reinstating the Abbasid caliphate, baybars sent the newly re-established caliph on a suicide mission to go back to Baghdad where he was slaughtered by Mongol forces and a new puppet caliph was chosen by baybars in Cairo, but spent his years in house arrest unable to influence the ummah 7) while the siege engines of the Mamluks were very impressive, sappers and miners did the real yeoman’s work of bribing down fortresses by destroying walls and fortifications allowing foot soldiers to storm the crusader forts Overall terrific video!

Baybars I, or Baibars, (born c. 1223, north of the Black Sea-died July 1, 1277, Damascus, Syria), Most eminent sultan of the Mamlūk dynasty. A Kipchak Turk, he was sold as a slave (mamlūk) after a Mongol invasion in the 1240s. He ended up in the service of the sultan of Egypt’s Ayyūbid dynasty, who gave him military training. In 1250 his army captured the Crusader king Louis IX, and he and other mamlūk officers murdered the last Ayyūbid sultan, establishing the Mamlūk dynasty. He distinguished himself against an invading Mongol force at the Battle of ʿAyn Jālūt (1260) and soon thereafter took the throne, when he murdered the third Mamlūk sultan. As sultan, he rebuilt the Syrian fortresses that had been destroyed by the Mongols and built up the sultanate’s armaments. He seized territory from the Crusaders that they were never to recover. He harried the Mongols in Persia, attacking their allies (the Christian Armenians) and forging an alliance with the Mongols of the Golden Horde against them. He sent military expeditions into Nubia and Libya. He had diplomatic relations with James I of Aragon, Alfonso X of León and Castile, and Charles of Anjou, as well as with the Byzantine emperor. At home he built canals and the great mosque in Cairo that bears his name and established efficient postal service between Cairo and Damascus. The Sīrat Baybars, a folk account purporting to be his life story, is still popular in the Arabic-speaking world. Britannica

Informative. Sad that educational videos get the least views & thumbs-up (KZbin severely needs to update icons). More sad that pathetically stupid videos of dogs, cats, people, music generally go viral. Says something about the educational standards of KZbin viewers.

Both of Mamluks and Ottomans are Turks. The founders of Mamlukoids in Egypt were kipchak Turks. The formal name of Mamlukoids was "devleti Turkiya" Mamluks of egypt have written as a dictionary in kipchak dialect of Turkish language. In this dictionary, Turkmen version of the words are also determined. Turkmen (oghuz) is one of the main 3 branchs of Turks. Today, the Turks of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Cyprus, Balkans, and Gagavuzia of Moldova come from oghuz branch of Turks. Kipchak is one of the main 3 branchs of Turks. Kazak, Kyrgiz, Crimean tatar and some folks of Caucasia come from kipchak origin.

@@sayedhusson3876 Yeah it sure did and how many did Egypt rise and defeat it's enemies?? Remember the Yom Kippur day?? If it wasn't for the US backing israel, israel would have been no more. Egypt could have defeated the Ottoman empire and took over all of it's holdings if France, Russia, England along with the Ottomans didn't unite to defeat Muhammad Ali Pasha, Egypt stood against the Mongols when the entire world was beaten by them, Egypt stood against the Crusaders and defeated them many times and even took a king as a prisoner. Egypt defeated the Hittites, the Hyksos, the Nubians, the Libyans, the Sea peoples, even the Persians at some point in early history. Don't ever belittle Egypt. No matter our times of weakness, we always make a comeback.

The only thing I have reservation about when it comes to Baibars is his taking revenge on the crusaders 80 some years later after the crusaders massacred tens of thousands of Muslim men, women and children by essentially doing the same which is against Islamic rules of war given that he espoused always to be a Muslim leader. Other than that, he is one of the greatest military leaders and statesmen of the world who changed the course of history through magnificent victories the likes of which the world probably never saw before or after for that matter. Imagine being a leader who takes down the 2 superpowers of the world in few short years in addition to building and defending your nation. I cannot think of another historical figure who did quite the same.
