I have studied the conductors score for months at a time while listening to almost all parts that are played in this song. These kids are either prodigy's...........or the conductor really tore apart every single measure for every single section one at a time while the entire group was sitting listening to his instructions. There are certain parts in this song I would have believed that NO student under the age of 16 would be able to play.

It's really both...and more. Bailey MS has one of the best middle school bands in the US. They have 3 full time salaried band directors that teach exclusively at Bailey every single day. The band itself generally has between 250 and 300 kids grades 6-8 enrolled in band (this is the 70 most elite, so there are indeed some prodigies mixed in there), the school is in a pretty well-off area of Austin and a sizable chunk of the top kids take 1-on-1 private lessons with an instrumental specialist. The standards are high, the admin and community is supportive and the teaching is extremely efficient driven by a very well developed mentor network and highly competitive competition circuits.

team, what a performance!!! Since i lived in Austin i am a fan of the 'fresh wind' coming from Bailey. Now back in Germany i want to send my 'WOW' from Stuttgart. So proud my daughter once was in the Bailey band. OUTSTANDING!!! Holger

Middle school?!? No, really, where are the middle school kids? Seriously fine job you guys! My Daddy would have been blown away by this. Great Interp. by the conductor. Wish ya'll could experience being conducted by my dad on this piece. He was a hoot and could make any band, even my high school band, sound great. Thanks from the Williams family for helping to keep his music alive.

A teacher that REALLY KNOWS how to dissect this song could get a middle school band to learn this piece. There are 188 measures in this song (from what I recall looking at the conductors score over a number of years). A GOOD teacher could get the 81 slowest easiest measures down pat in less than 10 days of rehearsal IF they follow a specific formula. Go through the 81 easiest measures first (leaving the difficult 4/4 and 5/4 sections for later) and half the students in the band would think they COULD play this by the time the concert comes up after less than 1 week of rehearsal. This guy probably had his students make SSSOOO many marks in the music that there is more hand written ink on those sheets than the amount of machine printed ink that's on them. (8^) (8^) (8^)

Alexandra .Willitts As a former member of this exact same ensemble this is entirely true. My trumpet part, I wish I knew where it is, was completely full of ink from top to bottom. This was a great piece that we put so much time into getting good. It's so crazy to look back on this now that I'm a college student, time really does fly by doesn't it?

My High School Wind Ensamble (Palmer Ridge High School from Monument Colorado) Played this piece in the 2017-2018 Music for All National Festival, but I have to say, this middle school band is almost up to the mark of sounding like a high school band. Great Job! 👏

Some overall alignment problems mainly towards the end. Chirpy clarinets especially. On the Trombone gliss there wasn't enough first part. Overall a fine job.
