Baji isn't an external art. it's based solely on internal mechanics just like Tai Chi. But where Tai Chi relies mostly on redirection of the opponent's strength, Baji redirects energy into a single focused, explosive strike. Baji is perhaps the purest form expression of Fa Jin.

It is though. It’s external with internal inside it. Tai Ji is the opposite. Internal with external inside it. Just like the Yin Yang symbol where Yin and Yang have their opposites inside each other.

There is more to baji quan. Liu Yun Xiao (Li Shu Wen's student) taught his students 7 star mantis (I might have confused the name), and Li Shu Wen implemented techniques from Pigua (explosive short range) and Tongbei (explosive long range), while he also used to send his students to train some internal mechanics under the guidance of master of Taiji (from the Chen lineage). There are also some movements used in baji that are present in Bagua, especially related to the Fa Jin, so it is interesting how much focus they put to the development of the explosive power and the skill of internal control of the body, which is supposed to allow the practioner to deal with powerful attacks from an opponent that is far heavier and stronger. Baji is really a fascinating art, but even more the people who have practiced it while sticking to its practical principles and most importantly its code of ethic and behaviors.

Watching this form or set of Bajiquan is a striking contrast to what I see when I watch a shaolin kungfu video. Shaolin just looks like dancing and waving limbs about like a ballerina or gymnast but Bajiquan has force behind it and looks like a proper fighting art. Probably even more so back when it was being used in practical situations

The myths of the mighty kung-fu and the kung-fu warriors have inundated some Southeast Asian countries for ages. You can see in kung-fu movies and you can read in many kung-fu story books, how kung-fu warriors can develop skills to defy gravity. They practice qigong so that they can perform super-human strength through their chi. And that's what it is exactly: just a myth embellished through generations.

Hey David, I would like to share some sincere critique and point out some potential inaccuracies. In the beginning you mention a quote attributed to emperor Qianlong - keep in mind that TaiJiquan was not called TaiJiquan untill the senior years of Yang Luchan. Considering that Qianlong died around the same time period Yang Luchan was born, Qianlong probalby refered to the concept of liang Tai Ji (e.g. YinYang) and the concept of BaJi (the 8 trigrams/ every direction/change/form imaginable). My point is, please don't spread inaccuracies on the internet, especially when the comes of the topic of chinese wushu. Chinese wushu is already diluted with misconceptions and plagued by being misunderstood. Otherwise the content succeeds in presentings Baji theory, even though no demonstration of Baji skill is shown. Good interview.
@DaWeiGongfu
@DaWeiGongfu 4 жыл бұрын
Great comment, thanks! I appreciate the Yang historical perspective. While Yang Luchan did certainly originate Yáng family style Taiji, Taiji as a concept and a developing martial art existed long before he was born. Qianglong was familiar with the styles that has been developing from Zhang San Feng’s styles in the 12th century. So it certainly isn’t a falsehood that he documented this in his commentary about the importance of Baji and Taiji as they existed at that time.

I think Baji was created at an era where it was used a lot in war, and during the work of bodyguards whom had to fight bandits. In this context it makes sense that Baji doesn't have ground submissions because it leaves you open to another attacker, so bjj or wrestling is useless against multiple attackers, even just two. It is something that happens nowadays as well, not all fights are 1 vs 1
@PeebeesPet

A fundamental principle in martial arts particularly traditional life and death ones is to never reach the ground. In MMA ground techniques only work because of the walls used to trap people. In real life the environment is much different. Especially if someone has weapons.

Baji Quan is Hui
@DaWeiGongfu
@DaWeiGongfu 5 жыл бұрын
Wu Zhong, the oldest recorded practitioner was Hui for sure. It's thought that he was taught by Lai and Pi, two wandering monks. In this doc, Master Yuan mentions they were Daoists but that the record is unclear. Here are some good historical details on the origins of Baji: The first generation(s) : Wu Zhong, Lai, Pi, and others ... There is presently no record allowing to trace any transmission of BajiQuan from Qi JiGuang's era through the next two centuries. The oldest documents giving some historical information about BajiQuan date back to around 1930. The most ancient BajiQuan practitioner recorded in these written documents is Wu Zhong (1712 - 1802), a Hui minority member of the Wu family (see articles about the "Origins of the Wu family" and about "WuZhong" for more details). According to the majority of these documents, Wu Zhong would have been taught BajiQuan by two wandering monks called Lai (癞) and Pi (癖), the second being a disciple of the first. No specific information is given about Lai and Pi in the records, and it is very likely that both these names are nicknames (Lai means “leprosy” and Pi means “craving”). After the end of the cultural revolution, the practice of martial arts has been gradually encouraged again by the Chinese authorities, and BajiQuan raised back from oblivion at the beginning of the 80s, especially due to the interest of some Japanese martial artists who started to visit mainland China at this period. Hence, starting from the mid eighties, there was a bloom of publications about BajiQuan. Many of these publications have tried to address the question of the origins of BajiQuan and of the real identity of Lai and Pi. As a consequence, some authors have tried to relate the origin of BajiQuan either to the famous Song mountain Shaolin temple, or to the YueShan temple of BoHai county in Henan province, or to the daoist temples of WuDang mountains of HuBei province, or even to Ding FaXiang (丁发祥, 1615 - 1694), a famous martial artist from the 17th century originating from MengCun village. Even if all this suppositions represent some interesting hypotheses, they however rely only on oral information, and none of them is supported by any written document pre-dating the 50s. Moreover, it is hard to omit the fact that the development of BajiQuan represents an economical potential which greatly influenced some historical claims about the origin of this style.

Terrible.. The quote is when baji and pigua comes together.... And the dude has no idea what he is talking about.. Baji is as internal as taiji.

This was the quote in the video by the announcer and later, Yuan Xui Gang: 文有太極安天下、武有八極定乾坤。 Is it incorrect? If there's another version of it, I would love to learn about it. Baji is absolutely internal, I agree. If the practitioner uses internal power/energy/techniques, I think that's what would give the true explosive power and speed of Baji that makes it so awesome. If they don't practice it with an internal perspective, it would be empty.

@@5324TuiG I din't mean to imply that it was external only. I wanted to get the message across that can be hard on the outside, but soft on the inside where tai chi can be soft on the outside and hard on the inside. Meaning they are both internal of course and have a very profound depth to them and a lot of nuanced meaning. I should have been more eloquent about it, but I just wanted to have a slight aside on the quote and then get back to the actual documentary. Another viewer shared the piqua quote with me. It's really wonderful! "When Pigua is added to Baji, demons and spirits will be terrified... ...When the Baji is added to Pigua , heroes will sigh knowing they are no match against it."

I've used Baji against Karate, Taekwondo, Wing Chun and Boxing and it's worked well so far. I've had mixed results with Brazilian Jujutsu - if my BJJ opponent is standing up then Baji works well because I can move in quickly and I don't give my BJJ opponent the chance to take me down. But if we start rolling on the mats where I lie down and let my opponent mount me and we start fighting from this prone position, then I find that my Baji cannot counter my opponent. So my counter for BJJ is to simply not let my opponent bring me down to the ground (which, so far, has proven easy enough to do). But admittedly if I am grounded and a good BJJ fighter mounts me, I'm done. I have been grounded by other fighters but each time I've been able to recover and get back on my feet. BJJ has been the only art that, if I let my opponent mount me, I cannot recover. And it is really because Baji requires good solid stances and legwork, which are all compromised when you're lying on your back with the full weight of your opponent's body bearing down on you. I've yet to try Baji against MMA but I'd be more than happy to do so if I ever get the chance. :) I'll fight anyone. :)
