BAKING HOT CROSS BUNS IN A CABIN IN THE ITALIAN ALPS

This week I'm sharing my favourite thing to eat during the Easter holiday - homemade hot cross buns scented with orange, full of dried fruit and chocolate chips. This is a recipe where I use no stand mixer and the dough is kneaded by hand. I couldn't think of a cosier destination to bake than this cabin on a snow-covered mountain in the alps of Italy. This area of north Italy is called Trentino and is home to the Dolomites.

Cabin life feels so cosy and when there is such wonderful home cooked goodies to eat, it's like a little piece of hreaven. Those hot cross buns looked so delicious!All that fresh mountain air and walks would give you a good appetite! I remember when I was little we spent a few days in my uncles cabin in the mountains near Udine and it was so cosy. There was a lightening storm one night and we watched from the upper balcony that was covered and I will never forget the smell of the pine trees and the almost deafening sound of the rain and thunder and the lightening that lit up all the trees! I remember feeling very alive with all my senses on high alert, and feeling as if I was connected to all of nature around me! This video reminded me of that time when I was young. I have been in bed for nearly 3 months recovering from a back injury so I understand how your sister must be feeling especially being so active. I wish her a speedy recovery. Buona Pasqua!

Love skiing in Italy it’s been two years but our favorite is Madonna di Campiglio we stay in a little town of Dimaro . We have skied all the ski resorts in Italy the best food good skiing!

Hello, Kylie. That looks so delicious. I do recognize the name of the little store along with the ingredients from growing up in Germany. It's true they don't have vanilla extract, only these tiny bottles of vanilla essence. My mom marvels every time I show her pure vanilla extract. I hope your sister recovers fully, soon. Gorgeous, I simply adore the mountains here in Italy and the cabins have this beautiful rustic woodwork on them that makes you think of Switzerland. Snow can truly be so beautiful, even if I am from a cold country, however, I am ready to give winter an eviction notice. 😆 After 6 months, I’m shouting from my bathtub, “I am ready to go to Tuscany!” Then I peer out my windows searching for something green to be sprouting out of the snow, please I need hope. Thank goodness for the evergreens. Luckily the birds have returned and are singing once again and something inside me says, “Ready to plant some flowers?” Only about 3 more weeks and everything turns around. Love your work Kylie! I will say a little prayer for your sister to have a speedy recovery, hopefully no permanent damage. Skiing can be a dangerous sport, one little mistake and you are suddenly in harms way. This was so lovely.I bet your mountain cabin smelled delicious when you baked them. I’m looking forward to making them .What a beautiful part of Italy this is. I remember my grandmother telling me about the sheep herders that lived in the mountains, that they would make wine out of dandelions and made cheese as well. This was a long time ago as she was in her 80’s in the late 60’s. I wonder if Guido ever heard of this. I miss her . On Palm Sunday she would weave palms into beautiful cone shapes. She shared her love of gardening and growing with me. I hope your sister is ok and that she is cycling and back to yoga soon . Happy Easter from New York.

If you like to ride Haflinger horses in the mountains, there is a farm full of them about an hour away north of Trentino. ( I believe the farm was in Hafling) I went on two rides during the Spring and found a group of children casually riding their horses everywhere as a form of transportation deciding to join us twice. Absolutely love this video, it reminds me of Germany and Switzerland.
