the mere fact that Sandy's lasso animation is quicker and she can lasso enemies in mid-air would have been enough to make this a worthy remaster.
@maxwell_edison2 жыл бұрын
Yeah but then you realize that they also completely messed up her swinging. The problem SuperButterBuns described with the swinging animation is the fact that it *did not used to be an animation* - the old swinging was completely physics-based, you could go around in a circle and such. The new one is just a static animation, so swing as hard as you can and you won't ever really change the momentum or go in a circle. One thing is improved, the other is downgraded. Weird tradeoff.
@KingSolidTails Жыл бұрын

I feel like the tension between Spongebob and Squidward comes from the fundamental difference in their mode of artistic expression as best seen in Season 2’s “Artist Unknown”. Squidward, the Apollonian, is a perfectionist who utilizes the height of technique, but lacks inspiration, making only warped self portraits that are only appreciated by himself, with the general public, represented by Monty P. Moneybags, declaring that it “belongs in the trash” Spongebob, on the other hand, is the Dionysian, guided only by enthusiasm and spur of the moment ideas, which can lead both to acts foolish to an outside observer (such as his game with Patrick at the start of “Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost”), but can also lead to acts of supernatural brilliance, such as his bubble art throughout “Bubble Stand” and his spontaneous reconstruction of David during “Artist Unknown” Squidward ultimately cannot allow himself to access the divine inspiration that Spongebob has because it runs counter to his image of the refined, dignified artiste, only performing great art when he is pushed to his breaking point, such as the Ultimate David he creates and abandons at the end of “Artist Unknown” or the symphony he wrote through sleep deprivation and Spongebob’s noisy “medical examination’ throughout “Suction Cup Symphony”. In conclusion, Squidward resents Spongebob for his naïveté, which he believes invalidates any artist with that trait, but Spongebob uses as fuel to create art that far outshines anything Squidward has created.

Remasters make games more accessible to people as well as improving upon them, so it's always a delight when one comes out. I really liked this remake/remaster, I even 100%ed it the first week it came out because I was so happy about how good it looked and how tight the controls were, as well as QoL changes. As a basic game where you get 70 Spatulas, it's fantastic--still a great platformer. But it's such a damn, DAMN shame of what they skipped out on: -The 100% "reward" for this game still sucks. It's still just a do-nothing cutscene that unlocks nothing, and the theatre, which previously had concept art for things like Robot Squidward and such, now just has...crappy screenshots. Of the game you're playing. Of places you could go to yourself. Of places you've BEEN TO by now. HUGE disappointment. -Cut content wasn't added into this remake, at least, not the way we expected. I remember them saying that they were going to fully flesh out Patrick's Dream and add in the Robot Squidward fight, which I was really excited for because I saw some betas of Patrick's Dream from the OG and it looked kinda cool. But nah, it was just shoved into the crappy VS mode. -The VS mode is awful: connection is garbage, moves are limited for no reason, characters are practically the same combat wise, it's just trash. -They outright removed Speedrunning tricks from this version. I remember a live interview of them saying they were bouncing ideas of what they wanted to do to appease the Speedrunning community, maybe adding a toggle to allow glitches. But nope, that never happened. Fuck you and your Cruise Bubble, I guess. -So I heard this was patched, I don't remember exactly, but while you CAN use a GameCube controller for the Switch version of this game, you CAN'T map the buttons. Suddenly X is Y and A is B, etc. I don't know if this was fixed yet, but if not, huge letdown--I loved the GameCube controller's controls for this game. I don't regret buying this, but honestly, I'm gonna stick to the original if I want to play this again.
@pokepwned2 жыл бұрын
Saying they “removed” speedrunning tricks is disingenuous. The game was built from the ground up, so they would’ve had to spend development time purposely adding in glitches from the old game. Considering how buggy and rushed the game felt at launch, it’s completely understandable they prioritized other things. They clearly weren’t given enough time to make the game the best it could be so it made sense to focus on polishing the main game instead of taking the time to add in a “speedrunning mode” when speedrunners could always just play the original.

On a casual playthrough, they didn’t make the game better, but rather allowed the level design to be entirely ignored. Though it does go back to my point on how they spent the short development time they had tweaking and polishing the main game rather than adding in speedrun tricks that were lost when the game was rebuilt from the ground up. These seem to be the type of tricks that op is referring to. Tricks like cruise-boosting and sponge-gliding. I don’t think the devs would have communicated with the speedrunning community at all if they never intended to listen to their feedback and take it into account. They weren’t given enough time by Nickelodeon or THQ or whomever else to go about the issue in the ideal way. The reason they got to fixing the exploits we’re talking about is because they used their short development time to focus on how the vast majority of players would play the game: casually. They seriously did consider adding iconic speedrunning tricks from the original game back in-which is something 99% of devs wouldn’t have even considered-but simply ran out of time.

@Phantom I'd take it over Zestiria. But I was thinking more like a Phantasia overhaul. Or any of the PS1/2 games I never got the chance to play.

I thought I'd never played this game but this video pulled some deeply embedded memories from my brain of kicking my cousin off his own xbox to play this even though I'd been purely a gameboy child up until that point. it was indeed some dumb fun smashing tiki boxes.

This game to me is just a perfect remaster to a childhood game. They didn't fuck it up by half-assing it and they didn't over do it either. It plays like the original, but updated to modern standards. Just right.

I’m pretty sure the reason why the developers decided to do a remaster was because they saw the speedrun of it at GDQ.

When you said it would be better if there was a mini boss at the end of Kelp Forest it reminded me of how when I was a kid me and my step siblings could never get past the tiki buttons part and having seen the concept art for the cut robo Squidward boss, we theorized that it was actually in the game and that it was hidden in the only part of the game we hadn't seen yet, the end of Kelp Forest.

Finally, a good review of this game. Spongebob's Dream is actually my least favorite level, because of its difficulty. I actually felt that they toned it down some in Rehydrated. Except for the death plane that keeps you from skipping the slide near the start, I wanna punch the developer that put that there when it wasn't there in the original. Let me jump right to the bottom, darn you! I'll forever like the Sandy's Dream level though. Slidin' texan fun, yeehaw, pardner.

Something in me must have changed since I played this game (or the original, rather) as a kid, because when I went back to replay it a few years ago, all the collectibles, which I had unlimited time to gather one by one if I was just willing to backtrack for a bit, were somehow stressing me out. Maybe it was something that happened in high school or college, but I felt like I was being pulled in multiple directions if I couldn't go after _every_ spatula and _every_ sock _all the time._ I would go through the levels adding up every time the thought "Oh, good, I just have to remember to come all the way back here with another character" crossed my mind like I was stacking plates made of anxiety on my head. I ended up quitting in the Merma-lair, where, IIRC, there were a bunch of parts that made it hard to go backwards or even forced the player to start from the beginning of the area, which made me feel like my brain was being stretched in exactly the way you're not supposed to play with a slinky. I don't remember any trouble with the bowling balls, though. But for people who aren't damaged, I bet this game is still a good time!

Speaking of the scores, both IGN and Gamespot(mainly IGN) have gave games that are either so bad that you hated it or games that were too easy even more so than you can believe. Games like P5R got a 10/10 despite being a easy game that has so many broken mechanics that the challenge is beating it without the mechanics appearing and such. Meanwhile games like this got a 5/10 and Luigi’s mansion a 4/10… I can’t make this shit up, people. Moral of the story, never trust IGN nor GameSpot if they make statements as “this challenge is hard even though it looks and it is easy”
@IzraelGraves2 жыл бұрын
I mean if you think P5R isn't a 10/10 your taste in video games as a whole is completely questionable and invalidates the rest of your comment, even though everything else you said was spot on. Lol

Super Butter Buns are a rare delicacy that undergo an arduous and lengthy process that takes upwards of about a year to make by the highly skilled artisans as the Buns Research Division and as such these buns only come out about once a year but the wait is worth it as these buns are almost universally regarded as the best the world has to offer.

Well, since this is a pettiness amnesty zone, I disagree about the color changes. The original was more true to the look of the show, and the remake just feels like Purple Lamp was showing off to line their porfolios. In fact, the original (along with the movie tie-in and Creature from the Krusty Krab) still look good enough today that THQ Nordic should have just released an HD trilogy of them with original graphics intact and the only changes being any necessary QOL/gameplay enhancements.
@sev11202 жыл бұрын
I think a neat thing would be a New Game plus mode where you get to play with the additional multiplayer characters, who could get their own unique abilities for traversal and combat. Squidward having an AOE stun ability with hie clarinet, and being able to scale certain obstacles that other characters have to platform around Krabs being able to collect the game's currency easier, and having extra protection from his own shell Just two ideas to throw out there
@TheSandwhichman1082 жыл бұрын
I know it’s called goo lagoon in the show but I’ve been thinking that any body of water in bikini bottom is actually freshwater. Which makes a bit of sense since fresh and salt water literally don’t mix. Plus it explains why the characters can’t breathe in it since there sea creatures and need salt water to survive.(except sandy who can’t breath either in.)
