It's truly amazing to see high end medical doctors with zero ego and such open minds that they learn from non medical docs. I have subscribed to the channel and will on all of you. Regards Brendan (Tim) 56 years. In Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪

This is a timely discussion for me. I was recently diagnosed with Hemochromatosis (Ferritin near 600) and am convinced it was a primary cause of my atherosclerosis (age 64). My father had Hemochromatosis too, I should have paid more attention to his warnings. I have had a number of phlebotomy sessions and my Ferritin is down to 250 now, many weird symptoms have disappeared too.

Me,and my brother also have hereditary hemochromatosis,we found it out accidentally. My hemochromatoses is considered "borderline,I never had any symptoms. My brother's ferritin levels was much higher due to being a man. We both donate blood regularly. My brother has just turned 84 and is quite healthy ,and active regardless of his hemochromatos. He also does not have any joint issues. I suppose my parents were carriers. Neither of my sons inherited this .

Black Licorice is high in Iron & was in Egyptian Tombs as a needed Nutrient. Black Licorice is a great way to boost the immune system & how that is, is quite interesting & un-known to me.

Is ferritin really a marker of inflammation? I eat mostly plant based with lots of beans and greens that contain iron, and my ferritin has gone up to 177. So that is relatively high, and yet my CRP is usually 0.4 to 0.6. My testosterone is 455 at 51 years old. So what I wonder is, is it ok to have a ferritin of 150 or so as long as one is able keep oxidative stress low. Wouldn't that keep a higher oxygen transport by the blood? I took apo-lactoferrin to chelate the iron and my ferritin went down to 75, but I wonder if it is a good thing or not. Wouldn't that reduce the oxygen transport by the blood?

I a!so have hemochromatosis. I monitor my ferritin level which was originally around 1500 in my early 50s. I try to keep my ferritin level below 50. in my 70s it seems I only need phlebotomy once a year. My question is what is the ideal ferritin number? Mine has been as low as 19.

Have haemotomatosis AND low haemoglobin! So when haemoglobin had been low, I have not been allowed to have a venesection. So I have to increase my iron levels to get my haemoglobin up in order to have a venesection which is only necessary ad I have iron overload!!

Thanks for this, it’s very timely for me. Been on trt for 4 years now and ferritin has gone from 130 to 350 in that time. Iron is sometimes 150, sometimes 250 and the highest I saw was 296. I test those and other biomarkers about every 3 months. Have never donated. So, as a rule of thumb, do you have recommendations for people in this situation? Btw I only eat red meat once a week and don’t take any iron supps

It's great to hear that you're keeping such a close eye on your biomarkers! For those in similar situations, consider discussing with your healthcare provider about dietary adjustments or potential donations to manage iron levels effectively.
