Interesting. Especially to hear Alana's voice. Watching this channel so often, I feel so familiar with all of the musicians, but have never heard any of them speak, so it was a great surprise.

Given that I've been offered the loan of a baroque violin, this kind of information is very useful! Obviously I should get some lessons with a baroque violinist if I want to take it very far, but it'll help me get started, and brings attention to some of the things that are different for us early music folks (although my main early instrument is the viola da gamba, where shifting's a very different proposition and not nearly as scary!)

Dear Alana, many thanks. This explanation of position shift on the baroque violin is great. I always had been wondering how shifts are possible on those old instruments without "earthquakes". :) Well, it seems, even an old man, I'm 76 years old, still can learn new things. Thank you very much and greetings from Graz (Austria).

What material is exactly the cloth that is being used on the instrument?

The violin only sounds because of a player, playing. Thousands of practice hours, a lifetime dedication with devotion to the instrument. It doesn't sound by itself.

Hi! Really useful. I have one question. Is this way of shifting the same for the viola? Let me explain: since the viola is a much heavier instrument and the body can't be supported entirely on the space between the jaw and the shoulder, which muscles are involved? Another question: what material is the cloth you use on the violin? Thanks a lot, great job!

I have a very strange problem. I can move my left finger very easy & relax without tension if i hold something like a iron stick, pvc water pipe or water bottle regardless their weight but immediately finger feel tension & a little lock here & there when holding a violin. Anyone have any idea why this happen ?? Thanks first
@VoicesofMusic4 жыл бұрын
Because you are holding it at the end it acts like a lever, perhaps.
@infinitepawer4 жыл бұрын
@@VoicesofMusic The most strange thing is that i can do whatever i want without finger tension even in whatsoever weird hand position but in standard holding violin position i need to practice a lot to make finger work as will. It to a point i feel like it's a curse @.@

Given the ridicoulosly low chance that I will ever play the baroque violine, I found it not just entertaining, but useful too. Now I know what to do if, as a cat, stuck on a tree: just use gravity! That actually has more chance to happen...

Why not using a shoulder rest?
@VoicesofMusic4 жыл бұрын
The idea is to recreate the sound and technique of the violin from the time of Bach and Vivaldi. They did not use the shoulder rest. The rest makes it easier to shift, but it clamps down on the soundboard.
@ulisescervantes4 жыл бұрын
@@VoicesofMusic Thank you. Great job on doing that btw. I guess not using shoulder rest forces the playing style to be more 'historically accurate' .
@VoicesofMusic3 жыл бұрын
When you take the clamps off it's a different instrument. Not better, just different--more like what ppl in the baroque time period would be familiar with.
@CRS19524 жыл бұрын
You can downshift this way if you have talent but if all you have is technique you need to lift the neck on the downshift so the violin won't slip away off of the shoulder.
@adityaprakash35184 жыл бұрын
Is that a baroque violin or a modern violin without a chinrest? Because the fingerboard is quite longer than it is on a baroque instrument and the varnish looks too beautiful for any baroque instrument I have seen lmaoo
@VoicesofMusic4 жыл бұрын
It's baroque--a Testore model. If you look at the fingerboard, it ends *before* the upper bout.
