Balcones was my first distillery tour, and from what my father has said, after he had touring Jack Daniels and other big distilleries many times, Balcones has the most personal and in depth tour. For the basic tour you get a 45-60 minute tour followed by a group tasting of 8 of their expressions (if I remember correctly). On top of this, if you choose to purchase any bottles in their gift shop you get a $10 discount, and they also offer bottles that aren't sold in retail stores, such as their Texas Rye Cask Strength at 126.6 proof or 63.3% ABV (my favorite whiskey).

Great review! I was just at Balcones distillery a week ago or so - awesome whiskies! I'll be reviewing a few during my "Texas Month". In my opinion, Texas is THE place to keep an eye on as they are producing some unique high quality Bourbons and Single Malts. They've got some limited "Distillery Only" and "Texas Only" bottlings that are to DIE for!

One of my favorite distilleries. A great new product from them and for the price you cannot beat it. The annual release blue corn bourbon is $80 and this one is only $30 so a great deal. Typical Balcones notes that really grew on me after being open a few days. Will always have this one in my cabinet.

Hi Bill, Synchronicity ! Scott and Bart just dropped their review of this today too. Guess one advantage of the very hot climate in Texas is how fast the Whiskey matures in the cask so they can have matured spirit in the bottle ready for sale in a lot shorter time so they don't have to spend years selling MGP juice while theirs is aging.

I get a lot of raisin with mine. Not my favorite. There is some strange after taste. You need to try Garrison Brothers Balmorhea. That is even more syrupy.

I'm way late, but I'm only just now watching the video. 🙂 I had my first taste of Balcones Pot Still Bourbon on December 22 of last year, just shy of a year ago, when I'd only been drinking whisky for three months. It immediately became not just my favorite bourbon, but my favorite whisky, and so far nothing has dethroned it (though the Balcones Lineage Texas Single Malt is now tied for first). I'm still trying to sort out everything that's in it. I get butter, mesquite smoke, caramel, corn, vanilla...if I were to do a review now, with my less untrained nose and palate, I'd do better than in my notes, but I still wouldn't be able to name everything that I'm smelling and tasting. Overall, I liken this whisky to sitting by a mesquite barbecue fire while eating candy. I know a lot of people don't like Balcones Distilling at all, and don't like this whisky in particular (one guy on MeWe claims it's a one-note bourbon, which I can't feature at all). But I think I could drink this stuff for the rest of my life and not come to the end of what it has to offer.

Nicely Done Bill, your review really make me want to try all the other Balcones expressions, I am currently enjoying their classic Texas Single Malt but am holding out for the rest to enter my state. Also will be watching for your review of the Kilbeggan since I am on a kind Irish whiskey kick at the moment. Cheers to the best dram in your glass!

I love Balcones pot still bourbon - right now it's my favorite whisky. So the fact that you like it pleases me. But I'm a Texan, and I have to tell you that there ain't no sech animule as a PEE-can (unless you're referring to a can into which you pee :) ). The name of the nut is p-KAHN. And until you pronounce it that way, you're not going to really impress us Texans - or any other southerners for that matter - no matter how many nice things you say about the bourbon. :)

Just picked this up for $29.99, which I think was a steal. It's on the sweet side/ corny if you ask me. I think the whiskey needs to breathe a bit. When it does, less corny sweetness comes out and the vanilla shows up. The rye style spice is in the taste as well. It tastes a little young, but not hot at all.

Smoke, FUNK! (From pot still?), leather (not meat), and wheat sweetness. Finishes with smoke and roasted corn. Im not quite familiar with blue corn, but you can def tell its roasted! Instantly in my top 5 most interesting bourbons

Just picked up a bottle of this. I’m not super experienced in picking out things but I was caught off guard by the funk and couldn’t really put my finger on what it was exactly. It shows up on the finish for me and I did get a little of the spice.

Being a big fan of their Baby Blue corn whiskey, I had to try their bourbon (especially for the price). It's good, but it tastes a lot like Baby Blue, so I'm guessing they use the same blue corn in this mash bill - just less of it.

Mmmm - just got one for about $26 and I think it's different but delicious. The rye note is very present if you have had their Rye, same spicy chocolatey flavor to me. Too many blah bourbons out there and this one brings some interesting flavors. Been looking for something with a little more flavor for a more interesting Old Fashioned - this should fit the role nicely...cheers!

Balcones labeling and website is confusing! I just purchased a Balcones Single Malt with a black colored label with gold and white letters, and in small letters at the bottom states Pot Distilled. It's 106 Proof. They show other Pot Distilled Whisky with different labels but not the one I purchased just two weeks ago with a bottling date of 3.12.19 on the back label. Not really liking the flavor also but hope it opens up a little after it oxidizes for a bit!

It would help but not considerably cuz I wouldn't want to age for too long I I think one or two more years would help accentuate some of the flavors but it's pretty good where it stands

How can it be Bourbon if it wasn't produced in Bourbon County Kentucky? It should be called Texas whisky.

Feeling absolutely comfortable doing solo videos isn't an easy thing to do and I think it's become part of your KZbin persona.
