Indeed, it is not their fault. Over the last years I have found myself reluctantly, grudgingly, agonisingly respecting and even somewhat liking the Ultramarines. Yes their name can be read almost literally as "super-duper space marines", yes they've come to overshadow their cousins by simple virtue that they look good and are easily presented as the shining example of their kind, and yes they are basically "vanilla marines" with very little to make them stand out among the pack against the likes of Space Wolves and Iron Hands, but that's almost the point of them! If Chapters in the current timeline can be equated to the various roles within their own structure then Black Templars would be the Chaplains, Blood Angels the Assault Marines, and Ultramarines would be Tactical Squads. They're the "go anywhere, do anything, kill anyone" generalists and my stubborn, heel-dragging determination to scorn them based on overexposure (and poor wording by *certain* individuals who shall remain nameless) has eroded in the face of these realisations. The big breakthrough, however, was when I got to know a little about Roboute as a character rather than a caricature... I might never love them in the same way as I love the Dark Angels, Salamanders or even late-founding chapters like the Lamenters, but I can no longer look down my nose and sniff at the blue boys from Ultramar. I'm still butthurt about how abruptly and ham-fistedly the Primaris were introduced, but now I can at least go ahead with gritted teeth and quietly repeat to myself "it's not their fault".
@popbogdanemilian14 жыл бұрын
Well they are inspired after the Roman empire.. basically the most dominant and successful empire.. and they army at the period was unrivalled and won against all they have encountered. Plus they have developed and put the base of most of the current dominant country's. There tactics are used even today fro police and military around the globe. So ofcourse then they need to be the most dominant pe total.

I don't really care if it is their fault or not. There are plenty of chapters who are not painfully annoying to read or play (with or against). There's plenty of 40k lore that has real characters who face real hardships and exhibit real growth (or face the real consequences of failing to grow). Why bother crying over spilled milksops when there is so much more loveable stuff to love? The hobby is meant to be fun after all, and it doesn't matter whether the Ultramarines or their writers are to blame for the fact that the Ultramarines are anti-fun (more in the lore than the table top, but not much more).

A good quote, from I can't remember the source, goes as followed: "The folly of leadership is knowing, no matter what you do, behind your back there's hundreds certain that their own solution is the better one." I think, that this quote fits quite good with the Ultramarines, for they are leaders. So it is no wonder, that there are voices amongst us and in our beloved hobby, that think and say, the Ultramarines are getting their victories gifted by Games Workshop and their writers, that they never suffered as much, as other chapters, and now they got their Primarch back. I can understand that thinking, but what they seem to forget is, that a leading position is NEVER a gift, it is a DUTY, and that is, where the Ultramarines are the best. To fulfill their duty. And even if I call them very often "Ultra-Smurfs", as a joke of their colour-scheme, this chapter is one of the few, that have my highest respect. Now, who is in, to show the Ultramarines and uncle Baldemort some "Ultra-Love"?
@grosstoastie12164 жыл бұрын
I think that all of the Primarchs that were killed in the Heresy had a merciful fate compared to the bureaucratic, logistical, zealously religious, and socially backwards Hell that Roboute lives through every day of his waking life now. It is as if the Imperium of the modern era were constructed with the express purpose of providing Guilliman endless years of torment and abuse as he watches the festering corpse of his Father's legacy bloat and rot in front of his eyes like some putrid creation from Nurgle's own bowels. I say no Primarch has suffered more than the Primarch of the Ultramarines suffers now.
@jackmyers86873 жыл бұрын
@@grosstoastie1216 I must respectfully disagree. Dorn practically destroyed his Legion in grief at the loss of the Emperor, then was cut down by a thousand traitors. Vulkan lost his mind after being tortured by the Night Haunter. Corax had to murder his own legionaries due to rampant gene mutation. The Lion was betrayed by his closest friend and had to destroy his home world. Sangiunius....is self explanatory. Ferrus suffered the worst betrayal of the Heresy, plus's then died while watching his legion be slaughtered. And I won't even mention the Traitor Primarch's and how they suffered (Angron and Mortarion especially). And Roboute has to read a lot of paperwork? He has to keep fighting? Russ, Corax and the Khan haven't stopped fighting for ten thousand years. Vulkan kept fighting for 1500 years after the Heresy. Corax lives in the warp, a living hell, having been changed by its exposure, and is hunting traitor Astartes to this day. Roboute has always been the one to try to shape the Astartes and the Imperium to his own will, regardless of everyone else. And with no loyalist Primarch to oppose him, now he is shaping every chapter to be Ultramarines, just with different names. He does not suffer. Not half as much as he should.
@tonypecoraro92202 жыл бұрын
@@jackmyers8687 you're very correct about this. Even after reading the recent lore and rereading the Horus Heresy I have to put my foot down and say: Roboute Guilliman is not half the literary character of even the Lost Primarchs let alone any of the Primarchs we know about. What hardships he has faced were all pulled punches. He got to sit around playing Empire Builder during the Ruinstorm and his biggest regret from the Horus Heresy is not making it to Terra to prevent the worst blows to the Imperium. No shady secrets, no massive losses, no shameful failures even! His story is entirely too easy to take seriously, it carries none of the weight that any of the other Primarchs hold. Just once I want to see Guilliman inarguably fail and lose not just some random number of Astartes, but his own pride. Just once I want to see him humbled, meaningfully and permanently. Cripple him and put him in a Dreadnought, then get back to the endless stream of effortless victories for all I care. ANYTHING would be better than what we have now, which is no real struggle that feels like it actually challenges him. Oh he's frustrated with how dumb everyone who isn't him is? That's worse than just making him a vapid optimist! That's not a struggle that's just literary humble bragging, "His greatest suffering was how no one respects him for being the best apple polisher" isn't a characterizing conflict worth caring about! It's just Hermoine Granger in blue power armor!

For all the memes of their plot armour and Spiritual Liegedom, for all that their character is somewhat bland compared to many of their brother chapters, there is something to be said for a force of stolid, professional, well-provisioned warriors that can be counted on to get the job done capably and efficiently. Many chapters claim magnificent warriors, virtuoso's of the battlefield, but Rome wasn't built by warriors, it was built by *soldiers*, men who took orders, followed tactical doctrine and drilled until they could fight while blind. And then there is Ultramar, the Ultramarines' greatest vindication. If they had done nothing else, building this realm along would have turned aside all the jabs and barbs directed against them. For nowhere else can it be said that the dream of what the Imperium could have been has been preserved on such a scale.
Rome was built by slaves ,Colosseum speaks loud for that .

The famously written books of his heroics fighting all manner of evil protector of worlds . He called on fellow marines who had originally been part of the new chapters sworn to follow the codex. They failed to do so but the Captain realised that their recruiting planet was a dark place where the warriors fed on enamys flesh and the planets traditionally wrong doings had found a place in the chapter. So at first he did not believe they could fight as well as the ultramarines but they proved him wrong. I recommend if you could find the story's of his leadership but if you can buy them you will see how great a fighting force the sons of Ultramar can be !

The boys in blue! Ultramarines catch alot of flak and memecraft but I do love them so. Their aesthetic, their ideology, their fervor and grit, all bring great credit to their legion and their Primarch. We march for Macragge!!

Never realized how little I knew about this Chapter. I just see them all the time due to GW’s favoritism that I just assumed over time that I knew more than I did. Thank for the great video!

Thank you! Excellent story line. Thank you for relating the story of Rebut’ Guilimon,I wondered why he was so zealously followed.

The Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine video game showed me the Ultramarines I wanted to see. Not the Codex worshipping GW poster boys, but the practical and stalwart defenders of mankind. Both in body and in spirit... and the occasional Leandros and Uriel to shake things up and make the mistakes like other chapters.

We need a longer video on the death guard and plague marines, they have lots of lore and gross machines/weapons to cover. It would be sick to have an updated/additional video on the topic!!!

People hate on the Ultramarines mostly because they and their realm is the Least Grimdark thing in the galaxy... which is of course secretly where everyone wants to live. Well done Baldermort!

Man, I've always loved the Ultramarines in spirit. While I agree different or, well... inconsistent sources writing the Ultramarines' saga have tarnished their reputation, both for me, and in the fandom, I still enjoy them quite a bit. Thanks for the uplifting story to re-invigorate my love for them. I didn't even know that I needed it.

Yeah , the main reasons everybody hated the Ultramarines is because they kept getting the spotlight...and yeah its not their fault....Honestly ive been listening to audiobooks with Roboute Guilliman and i gotta say he is starting to become my favorite Primarch, only seconded to THE GLORIOUS SANGUINIUS AND HIS AMAZING BLOOD ANGELS! Guilliman is the most 'human" out of all the Primarchs i feel...his struggles are mostly maintaining order and sanity and trying his best to fulfill his fathers dream even if his Father wasnt a very good one....He still persists agaisnt all odds, and in the 42nd Melenium he is pushed even further beyond trying to carry the whole weight of the Imperium agaisnt the endless horrors the galaxy is throwing at us. And as for the Ultramarines, they are just doing their duty as they were trained to.. they are the most "space marine" space marines, accept for the Astartes from Astartes lol or Black Templars (literally space knights who fight space orks and space elves yeah nice GW "wink")

If Gaius Julius Caesar and Smurfette had a grimdark lovechild in the far future... It would be an Ultramarine
@jackmyers86873 жыл бұрын
Pompeii would be more accurate than Caesar. As Baldermort says in his Dark Angels video, the Lion was Julius Caesar, and Roboute was Pompeii. The planner Vs the free thinker.

Honestly. I've always held contempt for the Ultramarines. Because when I was getting into the lore, there was seemingly no end to Ultramarine stories where it was just "we are perfect", and constantly overshadowing ever other chapter, every other faction. I felt like, "How *dare* they, how dare they take the spotlight from everyone else, how dare they constantly be portrayed as the perfect marines, how dare they never lose, never fail, never be portrayed in a manner fitting the 41st millenia while being the only thing you can find of it." While this was originally due to my inability to find stories i enjoyed of them, over the past few months I've been growing to accept them. With GW finally taking the chance to explore more chapters with the release of the Primaris (which I personally find awesome), I could start seeing them in a more "realistic" light. They are actually a very intriguing chapter once you get past how oversaturated the lore was with them for a time.

You might also have been influenced by those who just dislike or disliked them because they are the poster boys of 40K.

@@musafawundu6718 Agreed. I was negatively influenced by my mate who despised Ultras and outright told me when joining the hobby to not paint them that way. Went Raven Guard instead. Then I play Space Marine 40k game and instantly liked Ultras, read more about them and they are an AWESOME chapter.

I'm making an Orc Army called the Proper Gits, I'm waiting on my paints rn and I want them to have Ultramarine colors. The Orc Warmaster has seen how OP the Ultramarines are and that they always seem to come out on top so he believes wearing their colors will confuse whatever power in the universe that blesses the Ultramarines into thinking he and his Orcs are just one of their uglier companies.
