In this week's installment of "The Housewives of Norse Mythology", Thor succeeds at drop kicking a dwarf in an intense rugby game featuring fire, wrangles a salmon with his bare hands, wolves die, and Loki really just f*cks up majorly. There was something about a guy that gets killed by mistletoe, but that was only in the trailer.

Right before Loki jumped off the cliff and transformed into a fish he probably said "it's fine, I'm a god"

I always love the Norse mythology, and as a Norwegian I am certainly not biased in that regard. Loki's punishment might have been severe, thrashing so hard against his bonds of son-entrails that he causes the world's earthquakes requires inhuman amounts of pain, but then again he does get a pretty metal role in Ragnarok: at the helm of Naglfar, the largest longship of them all, made from the fingernails of the dead, the ship carrying all the damned dead of Hel to wage war on gods and men, captained by a grim jotun named Rym.

Thank you Kingsmill, this is one of my most favourite tales from Norse mythology. And I love how cold, sinister and evil is Loki in this story(and eventually in Ragnarok after that). As you know, contrary to modern popular belief, Loki is never depicted as dark and evil in Norse myths except for this one tale. He is mischievous, unpredictable, deceitful, and sometimes bitter and vengeful yes but usually he and Odin(who can be pretty mischievous himself) are like an odd couple in a buddy cop movie. But in this one he is outright scary and almost self-destructively evil, and with minimal provocation too. I wonder what was his motivation for all this, other then petty jealousy. An idea: how about you tell the quest of Gilgamesh for immortality for the next mythology episode. It is the oldest story ever written and has a tragic story with very interesting universal themes...

Again well done, the force of storytelling is strong with you (sorry, I couldn't resist :D ). Was nice to hear the story. If you find a way to get it with subtitles there was a german fantasy movie using norse myth (particullar the chained Loki & Siegfried) called Mara & the Firebringer (ger: Mara und der Feuerbringer). I think you might enjoy that greatly.

First, Dael in glasses, totally cute! Second, could you do a little more about Loki and his family?
@trent29208 жыл бұрын
Excellent story telling but the ending is from a different poem. Officially in the poetic Eddas, Loki's binding appears in the Lokasenna after he crashes Njord's party. Both Baldrs Draumar (Balder's dreams) and the Voluspa, stanzas 32-34, state that Hoth was punished for the crime by his half-brother Vali (different from Loki's son) the day of his birth. It wasn't until Loki insulted all of the Aesir in Njords hall that he was finally punished in the manner you presented.

This story has Odin being a total Poseidon when it comes to Hodr. He beds a giantess (Rindr) specifically to birth a son (Vali) whose sole purpose was to grow up was to slay Hodr. Hodr, who I'm sure feels terrible, and was tricked, is still given the weirdest vengeance by his own father. Jerk move Odin.

Ahhh! That actually makes a lot of sense! The way the eddas are written tends to weave the stories in together as well (which can sometimes make it a little tricky to separate them in order to only tell one) and the overall cyclical structure of Norse mythology reflects that as well (or I suppose the other way around... Those reflect the structure...)
