Don't like the combat... I get that, but that's D&D. That's (almost) exactly how the table top is played. It's like me saying "yeah I really liked Demon's Souls, but I wish it was an FPS."
@Parkesview

The combat is very much pulled almost directly from D&D 5E. The turn based is adapted from that, and whilst it's not identical, it's real close. I get it isn't for everyone, but as a D&D player, it's very much for me

@@graciaman They played it on Steam Deck, after using this option a while myself on keyboard and mouse, I was trying to help my wife do it, she's playing on controller on her PC, and it took us a while to find the option for controllers. It's called something that isn't very intuitive. If I had been on controller too and didn't know that was a thing I probably wouldn't have pressed the button to do it right away.

I'm a huge strategy game and DnD fan, so listening to them talk about the parts of the combat they don't like actually makes me more excited lol The people at KF rarely like strategy games so that's not surprising Edit: Ok i get people can have different opinions, but Andy saying he'd rather have mediocre hack and slash combat, as opposed high quality turn-based combat, is just nuts to me

@@siddharthshishulkar8992 The dices rolls is where the game really gets exciting because you arent always in control. They will always have the potential to just go completely sideways. The fun is in adapting to those situations. This is what real immersion looks like. Its not about the idea that you can see your footprints in the snow. Its about the idea that while walking on ice there is a chance you accidentally walk onto a frozen lake and the ice cracks. DnD is all about the idea of controlled chaos. Yes its oxymoronic but that is just the vibe really. You play things to the best of your ability and when things go wrong you adapt. That is why people say there is no wrong way to play DnD as long as you are having fun.

Couldn’t agree more with Andy in dropping the difficulty if you’re unfamiliar with or just not enjoying the combat. To his point it isn’t completely braindead but you won’t be reloading after 20-30 minutes after every encounter because you fucked up or died. And all the choice/dialogue/story rolls are the same so for people who want to encounter the story and learn more about the system from a base level I say start in story mode. Also I am loving this final release so far. Played early access over the last week or so and the improvements are much welcome. Very please with how the game looks and runs, just can’t wait to dive deeper into it. And see more reactions from olds fans and newcomers alike.

Appreciate you guys stepping out of your comfort zone, but after listening to the whole episode I have some stuff you guys missed, and a bit of criticism as to how this was approached. Blessing, you mentioned early in the episode that you wish you could see where you have your points so you know what dialogue option to pick. When you are given dialogue options that use your stats it says which stat it uses, and if you hover over the word it tells you the number each roll using that stat is automatically increased by (IDK how this works on Steam deck). That popped out to me immediately, but I guess you missed it. Greg, your complaints about the combat system, and saying it could be much better are- and I think you'd probably admit this- not super valid considering you haven't really played other titles like this to compare to (not to mention you're only 5 hours in). The combat in the game is actually extremely impressive, and offers a ton of interaction with the environment and neat combos which are very unique to the game. I'm not saying it's a perfect system, but as a listener your complaints kinda came off sounding like "I don't know this, so I don't like this" which is fair, but you can't knock the system for that and say "the combat could be much better" and use it as a detractor against the game like you did. I have friends who hardly game and are picking this system up immediately because of how well it uses the D&D formula which they have much experience playing. Obviously understand why it is unfamiliar to you though.

Long time dnd dm/player. Those new to dnd often have similar takes that combat can be boring, but in my experience this opinion begins to change once your character hits level 5-7. That is the sweet spot for most classes early game where you notice your skills go up and options during combat and role play increase as well. Dnd combat is more like a game of chess, or a puzzle/riddle to figure out before being rewarded with more role play. Hopefully my perspective helps out and you begin to love it for why its different than most other games available. Ever want tips hmu haha

Idk if this is the perfect impressions video for BG3 or the worst. It's perfect because these guys are casual gamers when it comes to this genre. So to hear them sing it's praises, can convince people to give BG3 a try. It's also the worst because, they are casual gamers when it comes to this genre.😂 Most people that love this genre, love everything BG3 has to offer, but when everyone on the panel says the combat essentially sucks (which can be roughly half the game depending on how you play), that's going to make most casual gamers skip this experience. I grew up playing Final Fantasy, then Elder Scrolls, for my RPG experiences. I love both of those franchises. But after I experienced the CRPG for the first time with Wasteland 2 then Divinity Original Sin 2, I realized that it is the best way to play RPG's. The freedom, choice, strategy, & leveling up your party, is so satisfying. Making your own path through the world, idk, I just get lost in these types of games. I haven't played BG3 yet because I don't have a PC, but I urge anyone that truly likes RBGs to give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

Tips for getting started on console. The controller has alot of shortcuts that make it really nice to play and less clunky on controller. Key shortcuts I found. R2 + triangle = quick save (save often) R2 + square = quick load Press up on the dpad to enter jump mode. Hold up on dpad to take out your torch. Hold down on the dpad to enter sneak mode. Press L3 to bring up the cursur while exploring. Hold R3 to see everything you can interact with and what has been looted already and see enemy vision cones. Just these things make the radial menus only necessary for attacks and healing. And removes alot of multi stage inputs like jumping.

I feel like maybe just rethinking the approach to combat could help a lot. You really are offered an immense amount of freedom that I think newer players might not realize just how much they can take advantage of the systems. Just as an example (so potentially light early game spoilers I guess) and I'm on whatever the normal difficulty is called At the windmill where those goblins have that guy tied up, I was able to kill 3 of the enemies there from outside of combat with my rogue by first entering it with my wizard and then using hide to walk up behind the goblins and sneak attack them and then I used a ranged sneak shot from high ground to deal enough damage to make the boss there surrender to me, ending the encounter before the goblins even got an opportunity to do anything and only 2/4 members had to take part. Or even take the same idea but sneak up and place an oil barrel from your inventory behind them and then blow them up that way. You're really given so many options for how to approach every aspect of the game there's pretty much no reason you should be getting stomped in combat I don't think unless you were genuinely caught unaware in the situation but usually I feel like a quick load to a previous save you can even prepare in some way for "unexpected" fights. Like use buffs before you get into combat so you don't have to spend turns on them, or carrying around a candle to dip your weapons for free fire damage everywhere you go.

Also ! Turn base strategy combat isn’t for everyone and that is total fine. Because for the most part you can try to talk your way out. I always tell those who are new this game style . Take your time and read. Combat can be off putting for some. But the beauty is being able to take your time and think about how you will attack, how you position your team, use your environment. Turn base gives a lot of opportunities. There many things you can do in game to take advantage of the turn base combat. Even while in a conversation with an npc. You can at the bottom left a different part never to move your team around if you think a fight is about to happen. This isn’t me bashing anyone for not liking this kind of combat. Just trying to give a different view of how the combat can be really fun once you get use to it. It’s very satisfying when you plan out an attack and it goes your way.

Nick and Andy are two of my favorite KF cast, especially when together. Nick has a sense of humor that's hard to describe, but vibes with me perfectly. Maybe subversive/observe-ive? Andy is hilarious and his references surprise me as I'm a few years older than him, yet he'll bring up things that are right in my timeframe. Plus his music bits are some of the best (Burger Burger, Junior Burger.....) I'm a new KFBF so I missed KF/AF, but I'm about to start watching their old episodes cause when they're playing together, the laughs don't stop! Same with SnowBikeMike, he elevates every production he's in.

It's always interesting hearing the KF crew's perspective on games like this. I played BG1&2 within the past three years once I built my PC. So I know exactly what I'm getting into with 3. And I played the early access build initially in 2020. That helps a ton as well. Combat will always be the biggest struggle for players here. It's heavy and deep and really expansive. Even more so than they did in Divinity. It's gonna be a blast for me. And they have the option to play more story focused as well. Being a D&D fan and being a fan of Larian just has me so hyped to see the full experience. I can't wait to see how the story plays out and how my friends and I will make each other laugh and get upset at how decisions.

I think the game is great so far! Only two hours in, but there is quite a lot that has changed since I first played it almost two years ago in early access. I feel like then it was WAAAYY more difficult combat wise and all the dice rolls were a lot less forgiving. I got pretty far into the story before I put it down back then. I only put it down because I felt like my progress wouldn't transfer over when it fully releases (which it doesn't) so I didn't want to invest more time into a dead end character, but I'm excited to get back to where I was before!

Having been someone who had a similar attitude towards any kind of turn based combat system for the first 20 years of gaming, the crossover games for me were the Xcom remakes (I got into the Total War series at the same time). 10 years later, CRPGS and turn based strategy games are some my favorite and most played games. I honestly feel sorry for these 4, because they have a stigma in they're subconscious against turn based combat ( which I had as well, and it is a definite stigma and bias), which doesn't allow them to even consider this type of combat to be as fun if not more so than real time combat. I think people like this just need to get lucky and play a very high quality game in the genre that has something in the combat ( or even just the IP, the new aliens crpg is pretty good)that hooks them and makes you want to dive deeper into the systems. Admittedly, Baldurs Gate 3 is not going to be the game that sells naysayers on turn based combat, it is far to complex. I highly recommend Xcom 2, especially on PC with mods as possibly the best entry point into giving you a new perspective on turn based combat. It is a more bare bones turn based system, compared to BG3 or many crpg's out there, and it is still one of the best ever made. Once you learn the basics of turn based combat systems ( overwatch, positioning, action points etc), just like the basics of FPS or platformer games, those help you to get to grips with all games in the genre and makes them more accessible. For the record, my favorite genre is Souls like games, and those are as real time combat as it gets, so I can speak very well on the mental block these guys are suffering from.

I'm glad to hear you guys liked it for the most part! I grew up playing the original two Baldur's Gate games and later discovered Larian and the Divinity games and loved those, too. Having played BG3 in early access, I can tell this is a perfect marriage of those two series, and I'm so pumped to jump into the full experiene. That said, I know these games do tend to have a steep learning curve, which may explain why you guys didn't mesh with the combat right away. But if you stick through it, it becomes incredibly satisfying.

I'm not surprised about their thoughts on combat it is very finicky. I remember when i first played divinity it took a while for it all to click. I think i had to restart the game 3 times, playing the start multiple times experimenting before i felt like i knew how everything worked. But its best to stick with it and it does get easier. It's worth noting that these impressions are after them only having played 6 or 7 hours. I reckon if you asked them at the 20 hour mark it will probably make alot more sense to them and they would probably enjoy it more. And then there is another 80 hours to go after that. Its alot to ask for people to give it that time. But its a deep and complex crpg with alot going on so it does take a bit of learning unfortunately. But it means it has alot of replayability and has so much flexibility in things you can do.

At least you don't kill him on the spot, there are people who just kill him because they hate him so much and I'm like "give him a chance"😂 Honestly I was like that with Shadowheart, didn't have her in my party and never talked to her so I didn't get to witness her quest but I love her after doing her quest. I think the boys are so down on combat because they have not been able to see how creative you can be. Instead of using spells to cover the enemy try and think what would happen if you use the environment with a spell that may drop water everywhere or tossing a bottle of poison. The oil barrel and than fire Andy mentioned towards the end of the video is just the surface of creativity that can be explored.

Its the idea that a lot of video games condition us to only think laterally. We only think about the most direct solution even if its not the best one. Its kind of the same with Tears of the Kingdom. Given a problem humans will find the path of least resistance. Like back in the day people would complain about how a game would have a lot of systems but not an incentive to use those systems. Why would I use this complicated combo attack when I can just hit the attack button and eventually get the same results.

I guess it's just the people I've associated with throughout my life, but watching all this BG3 coverage lately is making me realize that a much larger portion of gamers are *not* tactically minded than I previously thought. That's not a dig, not everyone has to enjoy strategic thinking and creative solutions in combat, I just thought it was a trait more gamers shared. I'm glad to see so many people who wouldn't usually pick up this type of game giving it a try and enjoying it though!

It’s wild to me that while this game was only out on pc, they all still played on controller which is without a doubt the worst way to experience combat and gameplay. With the mouse you can literally just point at everything, no keyboard even needed, but having WASD to move the camera around to see is clutch as well having hot keys like press Z to jump. My gf plays on PlayStation and it’s frustrating to look at the radial wheels when I know a much simpler and accessible system exists.

I think your best bet if you've never played D&D (especially 5e) before is to wait for some tips and tricks videos to hit YT. Those people will know how to bridge the gap between reading the Player's Handbook and learning the video game version. In fact there are already many out there due to the game's early access.

BG3 is an RPG ass RPG. I think a lot of people like the idea of an RPG more than they like playing an RPG. The idea of messing around with stats and really intricate combat isnt for everyone. This game is going to be very make or break for a ton of people. We have gone a really long time with console style RPGs which have kind of sanded off all the edges for better or worse. Like when they talk about Dragon Age you can tell they are talking about Dragon Age 3 which is a very sanded down RPG. Like I get everyone has different tastes but I always will think about someone telling me at a certain point RPGs were gentrified and we just never noticed. Like when people call Horizon an RPG and I get confused because there really isnt much RPG in that game.

Finally. It feels like I am winning in regards to playing PC. No longer held back by exclusives. I really don't hate consoles at all but the exclusivity thing just kills games for me. I get they need to compete with each other. Just imagine a songwriter making a song that can only play through an Android or iPhone. Why? I want to just add. If Starfield has the 60fps limit because of the physics... You will know I am angry.
