Great video and testing idea, thank you! I would like to see similar testing done with training balls. Will you really notice the difference between 3 star balls and 1 star DHS ball? What about no star training balls from bf from example? That would be good to know.
@iskandartaib

I suspect the only difference between the 3 star and 1 star ball is that the 3 star balls are subjected to a lot of testing while 1 star balls are either not tested at all or tested less. Since testing is expensive, this accounts for the difference in price. They all come off the same production line. So it boils down to - how good are the balls as they come off the production line? How many balls out of 100 fail the 3 star test? If it's 50%, or 20%, then the 3 star balls would be better in the sense that you'd likely find a lot of outlier balls in the box of 1 star balls. If the reject rate is 2%? Then the 1 star balls would be indistinguishable from the 3 star. I used to buy and play with the Double Fish 1 star balls when the balls were celluloid, because I couldn't tell the difference between them and the 3 star balls, in fact I liked them better than DHS celluloid 3 star balls. These days, I haven't even bothered trying the DHS 1 star balls, or the Double Fish balls at all, because the DHS 3 star balls are really cheap and seem to last forever. Actually, I really like the DHS 2 color balls (which have no stars at all). I can't tell the difference between these and the 3 star balls, other than I can see them better at the place I play.

Thanks. Could you test training balls next (less than 3 stars) and compare with Nittaku *** perhaps?

great video guys, you look very stressed, relax its table tennis :D. I just missed an overview in the end with a pick from best to worst for you. Price would be also a factor. cheers

I use DHS 3 star in orange and I absolutely love the quality and price of it. It's hard, round and it keeps it's properties for a very long time.

@@Waingro808 The reason there is an orange ball is some places are painted white. I wish they'd make certified balls in other colors that you can choose for specific situations - I liked the old TSP yellow balls in the 1980s, for instance, and I think a bright pink ball would be useful in some situations. Give the bi-color balls a try, too, by the way - I find them the most visible where I play. They're not "3 stars" because they don't meet ITTF rules, but they're used in the China Super League.

In my club we have Tibhar balls and they play nice. My personal favourite is DHS becuase it has a little extra spin. The worst one I have ever played with was JOOLA.. They feel soft, but heavy and have very little grip

I knew this even before watching. I mean Thang nittaku has the best balla. Excellent quality.. We have the nittaku training balls in our club and the very similar to the better nittaku 3 star balls... When I had to play in other clubs using other balls I'm so frustrated..

Not only are the Nittakus the best playing balls, they are exceedingly durable, lasting up to three to four months of heavy play.

It does seem as though the "Plastic Ball Wars" have sorted themselves out - the dominant balls seem to be the seamed ABS balls. Seamless balls seem to have fallen off the radar, there are only a few brands left, while the ABS balls sold by DHS and under many other brand names seem to be everywhere. (The seamless balls have this tendency to react more to sidespin, too.. something I didn't like about them.) To be honest, I haven't even tried the DHS DJ40+ and Nittaku balls yet because the ordinary DHS balls are so good (and the DJ40+ and Nittaku balls are so much more expensive). They also seem to last forever, unlike the last generation (which were the cellulose acetate balls). All the angry posts on table tennis forums about plastic balls also seems to have died down. Orange balls are also widely available. I actually like the DHS bi-color balls - they are the most visible ones at the place I play (where there is a lot of glare). These are not ITTF certified (since they don't conform to the rules) but are every bit as high quality as the DHS 3 star balls. They're used (or were used) in the China Super League. Also curious about the DHS Outdoor balls - I should try a box and find out, I suppose.

I feel like balls last so long that I just always go for nittaku 3 stars. I don't like how soft the dhs balls feel. The nittaku balls feel very crisp and provide a higher pitched sound that really just lets you know when you hit the ball right. I think overall the community is a 60% nittaku (crisp) and 40% DHS/Double Fish (Soft). It almost reminds me of the wood outer layer debate. Slight majority prefer softer limba and a large minority prefers crisp koto.

Nittaku has still exceptional quality, even for 2 star training balls. Donic is not that good. Joola is super hard, and you need time to adapt to it. Butterfly balls are, and I'm not bashing butterfly here for no reason, absolute TRASH BALLS. All of them, from training to 3star matchball!!! DHS best price/performance with 3star matchball, love em. Chinese know their stuff.
