Is the BRS-3000T Ultralight Backpacking Stove Really That Good?

I went from a Pocket Rocket 2 to the BRS. One of the primary advantages beyond the ones you pointed out is that because it is smaller it sits closer to the fuel canister. This has two advantages: 1, when it is cooler outside the canister will be slightly warmer and so perform better. 2, and this is the important one, the center of gravity is lower which makes the entire assembly and pot much more stable.

I love my BRS. I’ve used it for the last 2 seasons with no issues. I usually try to set it up behind a log or rock to block the wind. You can also use a z seat to block the wind.

Oh yes. The pocket rocket performs much better in wind. That’s why I started using a windscreen. Been working pretty well thus far!

The lower center of gravity warming the can like the other guy pointed out is awesome for cold weather. It’s actually called the Hornet! It’s one of the smallest and lightest stoves in the world. I got one last week. I’m impressed. I would have loved to have this when I was a teenager. It’s not the fastest or the most efficient. This stove needs a wind shield for sure.

If your planing on being in really cold(not attic cold in which case you need a liquid fuel stove) you want a system that inverts the canister and use a blend that has isobutane and propane and NOT butane/propane like the Coleman. The Coleman 70%butane 30%propane sucks in the cold. When the canister is inverted you can put a hand warmer on top of the can which is perfectly safe to help warm the canister and keep the fuel in a gaseous state.

I bought a BRS but switched the the Soto Windmaster. Getting a stove with that concave design (Soto Amicus, Soto Windmaster, MSR Pocket Rocket deluxe) will perform the best without a windscreen, and having push button ignition is not required, but from a usability aspect, it just makes the stove so much easier to use. I love being able to just throw my water pot on, and with the click of a button just having a flame vs reaching for the lighter.

I'm addicted to my carbon felt Fancy Feast alcohol stove. I have cats and I make sauce... Other than the felt, the raw materials were basically repurposed garbage. It's a longer boil; but denatured alcohol is cheap AF and a quart will last forever! Imma' check out that coffee though.

i use the brs with an ultralight titanium windscreen The top output sometimes is a bit temperamental but It has a great simmer for slow cooking

This is considered one of the lightest and smallest on Earth!!!😱😱😱 It’s not the most efficient or the absolute fastest but considering I’ve seen these on Aliexpress for $3.50 shipped it’s an amazing fuking stove. I could only dream of this stove back in the early 90’s in scouts(I’m 44 now…born in 79). Rock on gents!

Cut a windscreen out of a disposable aluminum baking pan it drastically improves the boil times. No real heat control so stick to boiling it likes to burn everything else ... ask me how I know lol

Great upload Rob. It would be interesting to compare the weight of the canisters pre and post boil for each unit to get a rough idea of the consumable efficiency as well. As far as the windscreen goes, is it worth using aluminum foil? Something that fits inside the pot when stored might shave some weight and space if you were to bring the full kit.

@@ZombieChingon I dont see much of a money savings by using tinfoil. I only paid $10 for my titanium wind screen. How many uses would you get from tinfoil? And the fact you would have to fold and unfold the tinfoil it would most likely get torn and be useless. Just sayin'. I'd stick with the reusable titanium wind screen. Thanks.

@@jayl6029 for less than $5 you can buy a roll of foil. Secondly, you don't have to fold and unfold it. You get a sheet slightly less than double the height of your cook pot and almost as long around. Fold it in half once so that so it's about as tall as your cook pot. When you're not using it, it lines the inside of your pot. To keep it from blowing away, you can fold the handles of your pot on to it.

I use an alcohol stove, here in Scotland you cannot guarantee gas at the smaller towns but you can guarantee methylated spirits everywhere. Darwin-on-the-Trail had to take a train and spend a day getting gas on his TGO challenge because of a lack of gas even at quite a reasonably sized town (for the highlands).

I gave up on canister-top gas stoves since I torched my tent with one of those Pocket Rockets. Too unstable for my clumsy habits. I now have a remote gas stove (heavier at 125g, but stable and also suitable for cold weather use), and most of the time I go with an alcohol burner (even lighter than your BRS and nowhere near as efficient, but I kind of like it).

Just my 2 cents...I bought the BRS 2 years ago $14 and used it out at least 30 days on trail. Love the light weight and size but very touchy valve, Not good in the wind and it burns through gas like a fiend... Great pack ability . Other than that, Stay with any of the other two.

This is my exact experience, too. I got the BRS at the beginning of this backpacking season, and have generally been bummed by its inefficiency, even with a windscreen. I've been taking my Pocket Rocket Deluxe out on my most-recent trips. The weight cost is so minimal that it's worth it to me to not have to burn so much more fuel.

Totally agree. My experience is is burns 8 gm of fuel to boil 2 cups at sea level. My Soto Regulator only uses 5. My same pocket rocket burns 7 for the same 2 cups

I don't worry about my fuel or the wind...now I just have to keep Raccoons from stealing my food ...even hung in a tree. A tuna packet and my last tortilla. The tuna was spicy so I hope Mr Raccoon got a case of after burn. Teach that sucker a lesson.

You can actually. It requires an adapter though. The 1lb tanks defeat the size and weight savings you’d gain from a stove like this.

The extra O ring is a tip off. Other reviews say the stove has failed to light due to O ring failure. Using it in the field should give a more accurate result. Enjoyed.

Got one and like it a lot. Just used it on the AT for a couple days. Since it is so cheap, I asked for a second one for Christmas. One for backpacking and one to keep in my day hiking coffee kit. I use the Fancee Feast the most, but this is my go to canister stove.

I ditched the BRS stove after testing it out.. it burned through fuel vs my MSR Pocket Rocket 2 ... not so great around wind plus the foot print was a lot smaller to keep my pot up. Plus the gasket kept not wanting to seal right after a couple of uses.. So i just went with the Soto Amicus lol for my upgrade and bringing it on my latest Adventure. In the end .. not worth it.. not reliable .. but you pay for what you get i guess.

Not really. Its cheap and boils water. Its pot support stands and simmering performance sucks though. If you want to buy a stove that can boil water on small pots then this works ok. Otherwise buy a Soto windmaster or MSR PocketRocket Deluxe.

@@robpelton I mean I bough the Desert Fox version of this, which weighs 1.8 oz, because it is much more durable and has better pot stands. At $12 it works great for boiling water and is super light. Works great for Mountainhouse meals. I also have the Windmaster with both the tri and 4 flez pot supports.

Meh...I’ve seen the o-rings go while on a trip, take forever to boil water because it’s bad in wind, seen the arms get RED hot because wind was pushing the flame into the arms...no thanks. Good video though I’ll check out the coffee for sure

Terrible quality- mine failed and broke on the first use outdoors. The weld joining the pot holder to the neck snapped spilling my small pot of water. It could have been a nasty accident but the water had only been heating for about 30 seconds. I'm getting an MSR Pocket Rocket as a replacement. I want to be able to trust my equipment.

Get the Fire Maple or Olicamp version of this instead. The titanium pot stands on the BRS are weak. I would not use the BRS at all however personally. Very ineffecient and cannot simmer. The Pocket Rocket Deluxe or Soto Windmaster are much better stoves.

first you say the wind effected it. Then you say their is no wind. Then you say you'd have to bring a wind screen for the BRS....you 2 seem a bit lost. The stove is brand new...you need to burn it for a while for it to have a more even burn sound...

Wind does affect the flame pattern more than the other 2. In a windy situation, I believe you wouldn’t Fehr as well. Income conditions it works just as well. However, if you use a windscreen then nothing should be a problem
