@@seanpaul4101 the step count begins when he kills his dribble meaning he succeed the ball by either placing 2 hands on it or he puts his hand under ball. The step he took with his right the ball was still floating so technically it’s not a dead dribble yet. So when he steps & lands with his left foot his right hand comes & secures the ball effectively killing his dribble so the step with the left foot is the first step & then with the right is the second into the layup. If you watch PGs footwork when they cross the ball over they have the same footwork. So again the step count doesn’t begin until you kill your dribble by fully securing the ball with 2 hands or underneath the ball

The 2 steps are only counted when the ball has come to the peak of the dribble and your foot leaves the ground and returns to the ground. That means if you’re halfway through a step as the ball is coming to the peak of a dribble then you get to put your foot back on the ground without it counting as a step. That’s the gather step, it doesn’t count towards the two, It’s not a travel

You count the steps once they pick up the ball with two hands or put one hand underneath the ball. Not when they last dribbled. If you wanted to you could bounce the ball in front of you and have it hover, take a dozen stutter-steps then pick it up with two hands and still be able to take two more steps.

This has to be one of the cleanest plays I’ve seen, I’ll even argue it’s legal hs level. There isn’t gather step that’s form here at all. A simple 1-2 layup. It don’t matter how many steps you take during a live dribble. Once he actually gather the ball in both hands which he did on his left foot. That’s step 1 then step 2 was his right then he lays it up. Beautiful play here. Even if he took an extra step at the end and did his gather step with his left foot it still would’ve been legal on NBA/Fiba level.
