The funny thing about the 1994 season after Helmer´s "Phantom Goal" was that Nuremberg relegated on goal difference. Had Nuremberg accepted the 2:1 defeat instead of demanding a rematch which they lost 5:0 they would not have gotten relegated.

A video on Leeds would be good, possibly starting from the 70's (league titles, european finals) till 2002 (relegation)...and then maybe a follow up episode on how they got relegated to league 1 and had to wait 17 years to come back to the top level. Also I've mentioned it before on your other episodes but a Nottingham Forrest video, and a video on Bobby Robson's career (taking ipswish to european titles, going psv, finding R9/Romario, barca, benfica, newcastle) would be brilliant. Great work as always, easily the most underrated channel on this platform.

My word I'm speechless I think this is your best work and I have binge watched all of these documentaries. Bayern do get alot of hate but man their mid 90s story is crazy as hell. One of the biggest takeaways from me in this doc, ironically isn’t even anything to do with Bayern, more how good of a coach Rehaggel was, wins the league for Kaiserslautern after just promoting them, brings Bremen their most successful period..he ended up winning the euros with Greece aswell, which was the only thing I knew about him…never knew his CV was that good until I watched this doc
@faultier32152 жыл бұрын
Bremen under Thomas Schaaf in the 2000s was pretty sick aswell.. They won the German double in 03/04. But they were kind of unlucky in the champions league, 05/06 they lost in the round of 16 vs Juventus 4-4 on aggregate after 3-2 win at home and a 1 - 2 loss at Juventus. A season later they were third place in a pretty tough group stage with 10 points behind Barca (11) and Chelsea (13)
@horstborscht74012 жыл бұрын
Under him, Werder were the most successful German club in the years 1987-1995 (two championships, two Cups, the Cup Winners' Cup, and two times runners-up). Rehhagel was a coach who was at his best with underdog teams (besides Euro 2004, he also led Greece to their first-ever win at a World Cup game), which is probably why him and Bayern just was a match-up that wasn't supposed to be. Still, in his "unsuccessful" 1995/96 season he laid the ground work for Bayern's UEFA Cup win, beating Nottingham, Benfica and Barcelona.

Nice documentation. It is really interesting to learn more in depth about Bayern's history. A little correction to your translation of Trappatoni's famous speech. At 25:16, he is saying: "Ich habe immer die Schulde über diese Spieler". He is not saying "Schulter" (shoulder), but "Schulde", which is "Schuld" (guilt) with an additional "e" ("Schulde") due to his accent. What he is trying to saying is: "I always get the blame because of these players". On a side note, his German sentence doesn't make any sense in German and should be like: "Immer bekomme ich die Schuld wegen dieser Spieler"
@balon-english3 жыл бұрын

Very well researched! 1998 was really a turning point. I remember looking at their squad with a mate of mine - both not Bayern fans - that summer and we just thought "Fuck, they're gonna be champions for the next ten years!" (almost true, with only Dortmund, Werder and Stuttgart spoiling the party). Compared to the other teams, they not only had practically two solid first division starting line-ups, but with Hitzfeld also the most successful Bundesliga coach of the previous years (everyone wanted either him or Rehhagel to take over the German national team after France '98). What we didn't expect that they'd be close to the treble already in the first season, so I was actually glad that they lost against United and Werder. The 1993/94 title was quite remarkable in that they didn't have many international star players (I think only Matthäus, Helmer, Jorginho and Valencia played at the 1994 World Cup) compared to the "FC Hollywood" years that followed. Trappatoni's second stint is a bit overlooked by many people, it was indeed him who brought in Elber and Lizarazu (both key players for the years to come) and even tried to introduce the four-man defense line (something still alien to German football at that time, with the unlikely innovators being Hannes Bongartz' Wattenscheid in the early 1990s).

10:37 one of the most bizzare goals ever. Wohlfarth had a chance for the finals 2 minutes before that and hit the post then Effenberg failed to score the open goal.
