I say called it something lame like the International Cup, as to not over shadow the WC. I think this would help in avoiding expanding the WC to 48 teams while also giving other teams a shot to play in an international tournament

Love this video. It's crazy the amount of effort you put in to research into every single team from every campaign of both competitions since the 70s. Must've took a long time. Such an underrated channel! I will certainly look at the champions league and europa league from a different perspective. I think your ODR formula is really good but one flaw is that it doesn't take into account the quality of the teams compared to others. I'm a chelsea fan so I expected our 11-12 season to be 2nd or 1st. Even though we finished high in the league in previous seasons, we finished 6th in 11-12 and our players were far inferior to the players of Napoli, holders Barcelona and Bayern so I felt like it was very unlikely that we won it that year. Same with Liverpool in 18-19. Despite them finishing 4th and lower in previous seasons, their squad was far stronger than most teams they faced in that CL season and also got the highest point ever for a PL runner up so most would say that they were one of the favourites. Nevertheless, brilliant, detailed video from you. Deffo liked it.
@balon-english3 жыл бұрын
Yes agreed on the flaw of the ODR. Relative strength was tricky to account for that's why I used the combination of the Champion's strength along with the competition's strength along with the path. It's a beginning and there is definitely room for improvement especially after I receive more feedback from the viewers. Appreciate your feedback 👍🏼

A lot of work, but coming away with Chelsea 20/21 as one of the hardest roads in history is not a great reflection of the formulas. Atletico, Porto, and Madrid in the 20/21 seasons were not elite teams at all. They were all very much declining. Chelsea in 11/12 defeated Barcelona, defending a treble, in the semis, and then Bayern, about to win a treble the next season in Munich in the final.

The formula is flawed like any formula would be, football can't be entirely defined by math. Far from such. But we got to see how strong the UEFA Cup was.

I wouldn't say Madrid was declining in 20/21 more so than the injuries really took a toll on the team, clutchness only takes you so far afterall. And a small correction, Barca were not defending a treble in 11/12 as they lost the Copa del Rey to Real the previous season.

One of the best videos I've ever watched on youtube, period! I consider myself a football geek who likes seeking for teams & players data over the years. I had never considered how interesting the analysis of the difficulty of a competition could be.. This was eye opening. Having analysed the video, the formulae used, the results obtained (I wont make any remarks, a lot of people have already made accurate comments & criticisms) I'd like to see an improved mechanism being applied to different competitions in an effort to sort out some hot arguments (WC vs Euro, Copa America vs other international competitions, most challenging title wins, etc..). Grateful for your effort, honestly, thanks!

love the math! But the points that Barcelona has in 19/20 made me think, that maybe taking 5 years average should be done considering 2 years before AND after the tournament. Not possible for the UEFA, but possible for your retroactive calculations of the strongest competition. A lot of clubs like Barca and Juve leave on their legacy and are not as strong as 5 previous years suggest. On the other hand "new" clubs like Atalanta and Leipzig might be there to stay
@azbvcy2 жыл бұрын
Great point. By the same token, Ajax and Liverpool being considered underdogs in 94/95 and 04/05 is a bit misleading as those seasons were the first of a strong cycle (Ajax reached the final again in 96; Liverpool reached the final in 07 and the semifinal in 08). In general this formula gives declining clubs a higher coefficent than rising clubs (surely Barcelona 19/20 had a higher coefficient than Barcelona 08/09 despite the latter being one of the best teams in football history and the former a shadow of their older selves). Possibly the only potential improvement to an otherwise incredible piece of work.
@novak6925 Жыл бұрын
Underrated comment. It just seems weird that the most difficult CL winning season is Liverpools 18/19. Barcelona and Bayern were not as strong in this season as their LPR suggests, especially Barcelona.

Incredible work to be honest. I always though that the old European Cup was not the same as the Champions League. Because unless you were the champions of your respective league, you would not qualify for the European. The second and third placed teams would often go to the old UEFA Cup, making it much more of a competitive tournament than the usual 5th and 6th place teams of today that go to the Europa League. Thats why its a bit disingenuous when people say players like Maradona never won the Champions League, well he only went twice with Napoli in 88 and 91 after winning the leagues in 87 and 90. Under the old rules, Lionel Messi would have played in the UEFA Cup in the 08/09 and 14/15 because they finished 3rd in 07/08 and 2nd in 13/14. And both in 2009 and 2015 they won trebles. So I think context is important sometimes.
@creative_soul-recolo Жыл бұрын
This is why I don't get as to why it is still called the Champions League when a teams like Newcastle can qualify for the competition despite not winning their domestic league in over 70 years. It's just branding at this point. This is why competitions like the UEFA Cup and Cup Winners Cup were essential.
@creative_soul-recolo Жыл бұрын
Then you get teams from like Russia, Albania, Serbia, Croatia, Turkey, Netherlands, Slovakia who are champions of their league but due to the co-eff BS have to play a qualifying round to teams who didn't even bother winning their respective domestic leagues. I mean isn't the competition meant for the champions? The only thing that UEFA did that was notable in the last 20 years is letting the winner of the Europa league qualify for the Champions League on the strength that they have silverware which is way better than a league of 2-4th which is pointless. Because you have a bunch of teams who are just there for the publicity and money of the competition rather than trying to win it.
@andreskattan2197 Жыл бұрын
Maradona’s situation is mainly why I consider Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Cup, and European Cup as four separate and different tournaments, despite being considered a “rebranding” and utilizing the same trophy. Liverpool, Juventus, and Inter winning 3 UEFA Cups is a better achievement than Sevilla winning 7 Europa Leagues. And Real Madrid’s latest Champions Leagues are far more prestigious than their first 5; there is much more competition now. Most people nowadays don’t know history and don’t value the Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup enough when discussing and ranking the top European teams, with Juventus being the most underrated and underappreciated.
@tashrif46 Жыл бұрын
@@andreskattan2197 It is really frustrating. Because most fans dont even know that back in the day only the champions of their respective leagues were allowed in the European Cup. The 2nd and 3rd place teams would go to the UEFA Cup and the domestic cup winners would go to the Cup Winners' Cup. If we played with previous rules for today, then the miracle of Istanbul would not happen because Liverpool finished 4th in 2003/04 season and would not have even qualified for the 2004/05 Champions League campaign.

I remember when I was a kid that winning a UEFA Cup, or a Cup Winners Cup had almost the same feeling of winning a Champions League. All three competitions were very prestigious, of course CL was always the most prestigious one, but the other two were very strong too. This was before Uefa decided to screw things up, putting money over the interests of football. Now clubs prefer to simply grant a qualification for the Champions League, than focus on winning the Europa League, it's so sad. Until the late 90's win a European Competition, CL, CWC or UC, was more important and over than win the Domestic League. Now win the Europa League for top clubs is the same has win the League Cup, almost, they don't eaven want to play in that competition, they prefer to focus on grant one of the 4 first places on the domestic league rather than win that trophy. Uefa screw things up at the late 90's, all because of money.

Absolutely fantastic work yet again. As regards Nottingham Forest, they may have won both of their European Cups in the 2 weakest ever seasons of the competition but i tell you one thing...Forest played 51 games to win that first European Cup of theirs in 1979. Why did they need 51 games to win the European Cup you might ask?...Because prior to the 97/98 season you either had to be your respected League's reigning champion or be defending holders of the European Cup. Forest had never won Europe's elite club trophy before 1979 and thus had to win England's top tier league outright in order for them to get their hands on said trophy. So Forest had to play 42 league games + the 9 European Cup matches in order for them to lift the trophy.

Great video, loved how deep you were willing to deep to investigate it, However, the strengths of teams were considered through leagues prisma only. I feel there should be added european tournament experiences from previous seasons too
