Primer Prepping

In this short video, I explain how I remove the anvil, clean the primer cup, clean the anvil and hammer out the firing pin dimple in the primer cup. This prepares the primer cup and anvil to be 'reloaded' with the priming compound whether it is caps or other charging media.

Thank you for trying to teach this old hillbilly a few things so have patience with me, when you say you have spent primers does that mean that you have used them before, once again I have never seen this before and I know nothing about it I always thought you just went and picked your bullets off of a tree and let him keep ripening in the fridge till they fit whatever gun you wanted to use 🥺🇺🇲😂

Hi glBaker, about 2 years ago, I sold my reloading equipment as I have enough reloads and I am no longer hunting. So my reloads are just for keeping in good shooting practice in cast I need firepower for home protection. As you can see in this video, there are 2 metal parts to a primer, the cup and the anvil (the tiny 3 legged metal piece that fits in the cup). One IMPORTANT thing I learned was that you should keep whoever made the brass (look at the bottom of your spent brass for the maker.. eg Remington) and keep their anvils with their brass. I have found that the anvils and cups can be slightly different sizes between the makers of the brass. And, I have found that I was able to use my spent primers 3 times before the metal becomes weak and will possibly crack or too weak and become unusable. Can't you get by without messing with the roll caps when you're using prime-all? In their video making percussion caps, all they used was the prime-all powder and acetone!

Hi GNT, I had inconsistent results when I just used the powder.. and you still have to use something on top of the powder as a seal and then seat the anvil. My BEST 100% success results are when I put a cap in the bottom with the primer compound facing UP then a cap on top of that with the primer compound facing down (caps facing each other), then fill the primer cup with Prime-All + a drop of acetone (also acts as a hardening agent) then a cap on top as a seal then the anvil pressed into place. I call the caps "primer boosters" because the 2 caps facing each other in the bottom of the primer cup is twice the detonating energy as just one or nothing. I am also suspect that the compound ON the caps is nothing more than processed Prime-All anyway but in a perfect composition for the best detonation. BUT, also my best results were waiting for 36 hours with after placing the drop of acetone in the primer cup thereby assuring maximum curing. So far my experiments have been successful and safe but I admonish everyone making their own primers to do it safely.. as I am sure you know, you are responsible for your own fingers and body parts whether you are pouring gasoline in a lawn mower or reloading your own ammo. Take small steps and make small mistakes before trying anything that might truly injure you.

faith will overcome the bad news also if u have a way build u a overhead tripod looking down on the work bench you want have to move the camera as much hope this helps also if you have a light strike with that gun upgrade the spring I had to upgrade my ruger p95 spring

Hi fr, I like the light strike on my SCCY as it helps to make sure that even a light strike will fire my reloaded primers. If I were going to further change something on my CPX-2, it would be the horribly long trigger. I agree with the you on the camera angle. If I decide to invest in a GoPro or better quality small camera, I may go with the overhead video recording route. But so far, I don't have the ability to put my $1,700 Sony camera above my work bench.

Hi Dannie.. You probably need to do your primers like I do. Disassemble and clean all parts and put in separate containers. But, only make 10 or maybe 15 at a time and do a trash can test on one or 2.. just to make sure you are not wasting your time and have a bunch of duds. There are times when I will make 5 and test 5.. then make 20 exactly the same way if all 5 are good and successful. From what I am learning.. precision and repeatability is the key.

Do you sell any reloads ? Sucks you're not doing the offshore videos anymore but that's cool because I like to watch anything that has to do hunting fishing guns reloading so I will stay one of your subscribers.

Hello huntfisheat, I just have a single stage reloader and each round I make requires me to touch just about everything.. so no, I don't sell any ammo. Plus, I believe it is illegal to sell home made ammo without a FFL license. And one thing I also have recently found out.. you can't legally sell or GIVE home made primers to anyone. You can only use them for personal use. However, I have seen several online stores and videos where the big stores like Academy and BassPro are getting ammo in regularly now.

@@SaltyKayak I don't know about that ammo thing . If they are getting ammo in again they are out as soon as they get it. I understand what you are saying but at this point the government does illegal stuff all the time so I'm not worrying about what they say is illegal or not . Thanks

Well for certain, things have changed. I am no longer a captain of the boat and have sold the boat and retired from intense fishing but plan on occasionally going out on a friends boat. So there will still be the occasional video about fishing but now, God has brought me in a new direction.

I haven't made anymore since that test video I made. I did try one in my 45 it worked just like a new one. I got a few boxes of new primers. I just want to hang on them a while. I haven't been able to get new ones since may 2020.

Hi FB, Yesterday, I finally received my "Prime-All" priming compound in the mail and have already done a test. Yes, it works pretty good although I did have 2 misfires which I am going to say were my fault as I didn't put enough priming juice in the cups for a first test. On my second test (only primed 2 cups) I filled each cup 3/4 full and tamped it down, put in a cap as a seal put in the anvil.. and tested it. KaPOW.. worked fantastic. I will be doing a video on Prime-All next.
