On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we will be comparing the performance of the 10mm to the 357 magnum on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points (winner takes all), for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 10 yards. Thanks for watching!

The comparison is not completely fair either because none of the energy of the round is diverted to move a slide on the revolver. So it has a small advantage from a power standpoint.

This is pretty much what I expected. I'm a revolver nut, so I have a few .357s and .44 mags, but I recently bought a 10mm since so many people compare it to .44 mag... I wanted to see if that was true. What I found is that it's a lot closer to .357, and that's what you showed here.
@doldemenshubarti8696
@doldemenshubarti8696 4 ай бұрын
idk what morons compare 10mm to 44mag, but some 10mm fanboys compare it to 41 mag. Since it's also closer to that diameter. however, at over 6 inch barrel, hottest loads of 357 mag is superior to 10mm, and at carbine barrel length, the difference is insurmountable. 10mm does perform much better out of shorter barrel like glock 29 than snub nose 357 mag. The reason 10mm is favoured is its capacity, capability and modifiability for faster target reacquisition via lighter trigger pull, heavier recoil spring assy slide action to reduce recoil, and even vertical compensator to help put sight picture back on target in a more controlled and speedy manner than double-action revolvers. Optics that help put rounds on moving target are neat plus (especially against faster feline predators), but for bear defense, which is for why lot of 10mm semi-auto are bought, you dont need anything more than an overextending underbarrel flashlight attachment or a compensator in case you have to shoot against its fur and dont want slide to go out of battery

Elmer Keith's original .357 Magnum load as a 158 grain bullet at 1525 fps. Many loads today are much less than that. Takes about 12.5 -13.0 grains of 2400 rifle powder to get Keith's original 816 ft-lb muzzle energy ballistics. I used to load my own to that using semi-jacketed hollow points 50 years ago. Today I buy factory loads as close to that as I can. If I were reloading again the alternate powders would be 14.5 grains of W296, or 16.5 grains of Lil' Gun. Underwood has a factory load with 158 grain bullet, rated at 1500 fps muzzle velocity.

According to Hodgdon's current online data, you can use H-110/Win 296 ( same powder, now) and 16.7 grains will give you 1591 fps with a 158 JHP. Your data for the W296/H-110 is a little light and below minimum safe load density. Note that using W296 or H-110 there really aren't any reduced loads, as it needs full pressure to achieve proper combustion. Light loads can generate wicked pressures and are potentially dangerous. We always used to do 18 grs of W296 and a 125 gr JHP for fabulous loud booms and fireballs, but that load is now under minimum load density... It now calls for a MINIMUM of 21 grs H-110/W296 / Maximum of 22 grs which generates ~ 1881 to 1966 fps and a LOT of BOOM>

Cylinder gap plays a huge role in velocity in wheel guns. Most of my .357 mag. revolvers with a 6" barrel produce between 1200 and 1300 fps, but my Coonan .357 Magnum, a stretched 1911 semi-auto with a 5" barrel, inclusive of the chamber, produces 1550 fps from the same load. This why you really need to test these two cartridges side by side from the same firearm type, either revolvers or semi-auto. By testing the 10mm from a semi-auto and the .357 from a revolver, you stack the deck against the .357.

After I shot his Colt Python that weekend I fell in love with the .357 and immediately went to the local gun store and looked for a Python. Obviously I found out they were hard to find and expensive if you found one. So, they had Ruger, S&W, Taurus, et al. So, I ended up getting the Ruger because it was in my price range. The "poor man's revolver" I guess. Funny thing is those Buffalo Bore's state on the box 'For use in Ruger Revolvers only.' Guess I picked right. Round count isn’t everything. I carry the .357 in black bear country and a .45 Colt bear load in a Blackhawk in brown bear country. If 2 or 3 doesn’t do the job an extra 9 rounds won’t help because that bear is eating you by then. Semiautomatics are great, love 1911s in .45ACP, but at my age shooter induced failure is more likely and the revolver just handles a misfire easier under pressure.

Re: "slow" 357 From the archived bbti test, revolvers seem to have a point where bullets of a given weight are balanced to powder burn rate for a given cylinder gap. The harder you push a heavier bullet, the higher amount of gas is being expelled out of the cylinder gap. The longer the barrel means there is more time to ejected powder instead of push the bullet, and more friction. The ideal barrel length for 357 with normal loads appears to be about 5 inches. This is an argument why 4 inch revolvers are more than sufficient and why you were having issues in a 6 inch. The other problem with 357 mag is that it can be used in rifles up to 20 inches too. While no cylinder gap, loads optimized for pistols will be worse in lever guns. Manufacturers and reloading manuals often try to balance this which leads to it falling a bit short of optimal in both. Side note, 357 sig was optimized for 3 to 4inch barrels which is why it is not worth putting it in a rifle length barrel. Most pistol rounds top out speed at 10-12 inches or so of barrel length. If it wasnt for the NFA we wouldnt see pistol caliber carbines much longer than that. 16 inches is ok but not optimal. Thank you sig for those years ago getting the atf to give us the legal fiction that are pistol braces and the 2AF for beating the atf back on the rule change in the last years.

I along with 150 other cops on our department carried .357 mag revolvers for decades. We carried either Colt of S&W and 125 grain Remington JHP's that chronographed at about 1450 fps. As an Evidence Tech, I saw the damage that round did to some bad guys in autopsies. It was horrendous. Going to 9mm was in my opinion a mistake. For CCW I understand the semi-auto wins. After retirement, I personally carry a Springfield XDS in .45 ACP. If I knew today I was going to be in a fire fight, the .357 would be my 1st choice. The .40 cal is waning in popularity. The main difference between these two cartridges is that one can load the same bullet weight in both and shoot them at the same velocity, though they are very different in diameter. Thus the 357 will out-penetrate the 10mm in all cases, given same bullet construction, weight, and velocity. This is called sectional density. It is king when it comes to penetration.

And for those who keep wanting to boast and brag that "Oh 10mm Auto is going to blow the doors off of the .357 magnum!", the .357 Magnum has more case capacity for more powder than the 10mm Auto! And you handload up a nice 180 grain or 200 grain Hard cast Lead Flatnose round for the .357 magnum, that's a good bear round too! Also, Alaskan Ballistics and Desert Dog Outdoors has video comparisons on these 2 cartridges. So to all the 10mm fanboys who want to dismiss the .357 as "Antiquited" for today's era of shooting, eat your heart out! .357 Magnum will always hit harder than 10mm Auto in the kinetic energy department! I carry .357 magnum. And I'm happy with it. 125 grain "Thunder bolts" behind 21-22 grains of H110 is the Goldilocks load data for this cartridge! I'm not shitting on 10mm, no doubt it too is a badass round and had the advantage of magazine capacity, but I noticed a trend that hardcore 10mm Auto Fanboys like to shit on other cartridges like .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum just their because their wheelguns!

The .357 magnum is a more powerful round than a 10mm, the problem with the .357 magnum is that most guns that shoot it are wheel guns and there is a fair amount of gasses escaping from the cylinder gap giving it about the same performance as the 10mm. Me personally, I would go with the 10mm because it simply holds more rounds, other people would go with a revolver because it's more simple and reliable. Unfortunately, some agents had trouble accurately shooting the 10mm that the .40 cal was adopted for a short while. @@michaelmorgan9973 I thought he had a rifle round go through the sand a while back, but I don't remember which caliber. Maybe I'm just thinking of the one that split the box though... Either way, the 460 probably won't go through, since higher velocity usually results in fragmenting projectiles... but I'd still like to see him try it, maybe with some hard cast lead bear loads...

At one time I had a Coonan .357 Mag autoloader. Using the exact same ammo in a 6" 586 S&W and the Coonan the round from the Coonan completely penetrated a piece, I can't remember the thickness, of Lexan bullet-proofing plastic whereas the same ammo fired from the only "bubbled" the backside. The velocity lost due to the cylinder gap in a revolver is more than we think. I did not have access to a chronograph at the time but I sure wish I did.

10MM is also typically cheaper overall. also, the cause for the soft fps cap you saw on the revolver could be due to the cylinder gap and pressure. in a semi auto the only way for pressure to escape the barrel is through the muzzle, or rupturing the barrel. excess pressure can escape via the cylinder gap of a revolver once the bullet has left the chamber. which limits how much pressure can be applied to the projectile as the cylinder gap is the path of least resistance.

I was having a similar issue with the 357 mag out of a Cimmeron replica of the Colt Thunderer 3 3/4” barrel. Switched to Underwood 150 grain and got approximately 1500 fps.

A 10 millimeter is what you want for the city. A 357 is what you need for bears . The 357 is still gaining sped at a short distance. At about 25 yards is where you want to test the 357 for performance. Had my 686 smith on a 5 inch barrel 7 shot for 22 years now and never go into mountains with it

No bullet is going to gain speed once it leaves the barrel. It's not a rocket. All the energy that can be used to accelerate the bullet exists in the gun. Once it exits the gun, it is only going to slow down. You might still be getting a "little" push in the few inches after the muzzle, but nowhere near meters.

Larry, The 10mm is taking over Alaska for one major reason. It stops bears. Putting the " Big bore" guys to shame. Course thats with proper bear Ammo. Not that standard watered down factory crap.

Larry, Sorta. A 10 is almost a 41 mag w the right loads. Bit more thump than the 357. Bit much for the city. A 40 would be better in town. Course, w the watered down factory 10 loads there's not much difference & you can shoot 40s in a 10. In the woods, definitely bear thumpers loads. The Underwood & Buffalo bore bear loads for the 357 are nothing to sneeze at either. Only problem w the revolvers is limited round count. 15 beats 6-7 anyday. On the UPside w revolvers, one doesn't have to worry about getting ones peice shoved out of battery w an in your face, muzzle shoved hard into the bears chest incident. ( more common than one might think.) Add, multiple bear attacks are pretty rare. Ideally the shot in the bears FACE ( where they're brains at) w just about any caliber will do the trick. Check out Phil Schumachers 9 mm grizzly bear kill. Not a head shot in the bunch but still stopped a small, client attacking griz w the right loads. ( Luck, skill or Divine intervention, take your pick.) 😁

I originally purchased a GP100 with the 6 inch barrel for "bears" and such in the outback, but after shooting it; went to the M&P performance center 10mm. No comparison with rounds on target, or number of rounds on target in the same time frame. When I'm in bear country, the 10mm is all I carry. I recommend Underwood hardcast. :)

I have the same problem with my 686+. Every time I try to develop a load for it I can't get any reasonable reading from my Garmin or my ancient Crony. Readings are always get SDs in the 55 to 65 FPS range and spreads of 150 to 200 FPS. I double checked my loading using a TC Contender and the loads are consistent and repeatable. I've given up using velocity data for loading my 636+ and just take the precision of the groups on target, primer condition, and difficulty extracting when developing loads for it. My S&W 629 does not have the same problem as the 686+.

Both calibers are underloaded. The 357 and 10 are both wicked in their original loading. I collected 10mms and my first box of 10mm was a Federal loading with a lead bullet loaded to 40 ballistics.

98% of factory loaded 10mm just duplicates the 40, but at a higher price. a properly loaded 10 is a beast, but sadly most of the 10mm ammo found on the shelves at the store, aint it!

In most if not all of your tests, it is the material amalgamation, overall engineering and weight, of the projectile that makes the most difference when combined with velocity.

H110 is a very tricky powder. Needs to be run at max, and sometimes max is not enough to get it to burn cleanly and consistently. Were you getting oily soot on your 686 or was it burning clean? If it was oily, even if it was a max load, you werent getting enough pressure to get a clean consistent burn. Sometimes you can help H110 with a tighter crimp to let a little more pressure build before the bullet gets moving.

My old woods carry gun was my 4in 686. I loved it even protected me but major draw back was ease of use at night. And ammo capacity. I switched to the 10mm with the kkm barrel one I can get 1200fps with a 200gr or 220gr hard cast and two I can mount a flash light to it. Walking back to camp at dusk in bear country it's a big help. Now I still carry my 686 even my 629 .44mag still great guns but if I'm packing into my hunt area or I know I'll be out past dark I bring my g20. Having 16 plus rounds of 220 buffalo bore or underwood hard cast on tap is a confidence booster.
