‘Meteor (Smash)’ is the correct term for a downward-launching attack in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Meteors in Ultimate work the same way as a spike in Melee, but the game itself refers to them as ‘Meteor Smashes’ or ‘Moves with a Meteor effect’. All Meteor moves work properly in Ultimate so the term ‘Spike’ is unnecessary albeit accepted. It is not an incorrect term.

Actually, tomohawk is the action of empty hopping into a fastfall, it has nothing to do with a grab, thats a common misconception. Technically it would be called a 'tomohawk grab'. The importance of tomohawk is that it often baits your opponent to shield, and grab just happens to often be the best option due to it countering shield. For example, tomohawking is still a term even in platfighters that dont have grabs such as Rivals of Aether, even though it is significantly less useful in that game. Great video though, Im sure this will help a lot of newcomers.

15:43 Ultimate does call "spikes" meteor smashes though. If you look at the support spirit Ezlo, you'll see it's attribute is "Toss & Meteor", and the description says it powers up grabs and downward smashes. good vid maybe someone has mentioned it im not sure but 10:33 should note a lot of people will call the foxtrot 'dash dancing'
@LastStar0072 жыл бұрын
Foxtrotting and dash dancing are similar but not the same. Foxtrotting is moving quickly across the stage by starting to dash but letting go of the stick before you're fully dashing. It's done to cover ground more quickly than walking while still having access to your walking options (e.g. tilts). Dash dancing is starting to dash, then starting to dash the other way, then back to the first direction, and so on, resulting in no change in position. It's used to make your movement hard to predict and mess with your opponent's spacing, as your opponent doesn't know whether you're going to move quickly towards them or quickly away.

Gotta correct you on your spike terminology -A meteor is any move which sends downwards (faster than connecting hits like those from falco fair). -A meteor smash is a move which sends downwards quickly, but the hitstun ends, meaning the enemy has an opportunity to recover (it also has the extra meaty sound effect). -A spike is a move which sends downwards and has very long (infinite?) hitstun, Think of chrom and ike up b. They also have the same meaty sound effect. In conclusion, most things in this game are meteors or meteor smashes, but there are some spikes (in smash 4, the only spikes were from items, no fighters had any, ultimate is different though). Hope this helps.
@FierceFIYA6 жыл бұрын
Now I gotta correct you on that, in Melee: -A meteor smash sends you straight downward and can be meteor cancelled by jumping or using Up B 8 frames after the hitlag ends (like Captain Falcon's Dair and Marth's Dair in the PAL version) A spike sends at an angle beyond the meteor cancel threshold, thus can't be meteor cancelled (Falco's Dair, Marth's Dair in the NTSC version) -In Brawl: The meteor smash angle threshold has been widened to the point that no playable characters has a true spike. Spike is only used as an informal term. -In Smash 64, Smash 4 and Ultimate: Meteor cancelling isn't a thing, therefore every meteor smash is also a spike. The terms are interchangeable.
@Balakin26 жыл бұрын
@@FierceFIYA I wont argue with you on any of your points there except for smash 4 and presumably ultimate (because I don't know or care for any of the other games), because I know that spikes are specific and kill from 0, like arceus' spike, but other moves are only meteors and meteor smashes. I would direct you towards the wiki for confirmation, because unless I'm interpreting it wrong, it corroborates my points. www.ssbwiki.com/spike

Where was the term “whiff”? Did I miss it?
@atheismgaming173 жыл бұрын
No idea. A whiff is an attack that misses. A whiff punish is when you punish when they whiff. Rolling past warlock punch and countering with something else etc.

@@atheismgaming17 I ended up googling it. Thank you though. I find it so funny you answered me of all people, my KZbin channel is named Telestial Gaming 😆

@@edwinharbauer2260 Yeah. I find religion pointless, and I like games. I named my channel as such.

Thank you for all your hard work. I have saved this to refer back to as I won't remember everything and I am very much a Smash newbie!

I really enjoyed this video, eventhough, I knew basically every term already. It was really well explainded and it reminded me of, how technical this game really is. And the Pokemon Music at the end, made it an amazing Video, love it👍

While meteor is the correct term for launching an opponent down downwards Spike is easier to say in the fast-paced realm of Smash announcing. Mario's Forward Air even resembles a volleyball Spike. Although connecting with it the proper thing to say is that the opponent got dunked.

Dude, I cannot say how helpful this is to me even more. I knew most of them, and some got me confused, so this is extremely useful. (Fun fact, I have three mains, Zero Suit, Bayonetta, and Hero)
