Thanks for the great interpretation. I think you are right. My interpretation differs only slightly from yours in the beginning section. I think the dark clouds in the beginning is not Covid but their struggles early on, almost getting disbanded by management. Misa almost laying down her pick I thought was a reference to her almost quitting. Miku, going hard on playing Thrill by herself a reference to the long hours of practice she had to do to learn how to play and how that song saved the band and they started to take flight. The maids flying across the sky in bright sunlight a reference to their numerous successful world tours, finally landing triumphantly on a Western US desert mountain which I thought was a reference to their 2019 tour of NYC, Dallas and LA. However, they haven't planted their flag at that point. They are soon engulfed in black smoke again, which is the Covid pandemic, which pretty much happened not too long after they got back to Japan from that US tour. The next scene with them looking dejected in the studio was perhaps about the cancellation of the Budokan concert, but then they start playing again with their online shows and the people are watching from their homes on their computers. Like you said, in the final scene, back to the Western US mountain, I think is a direct reference to the upcoming US tour, but this time they triumphantly plant their flag, claiming Domination of the US.

It's not enough that the deeper you get into the music of a Band-Maid song, the more you get out of it; this video shows that the deeper you look into their visual messages, the more you get out of them as well. Such a wonderfully thought-out storyline for the video. Our dear friends in Band-Maid never cease to amaze.

Also the MV starts with the band members surrounded by darkness until Thrill and Miku appear. Clearly a reference to the unexpected quantity of views of the video and how its success motivated the girls to continue with the band. Miku being the only one not surrounded by darkness because she was the one who had the idea/dream of the band.

This doesn't have to do with the music side but, Sailor Moon isn't the only anime referenced with their new video. They throw a few tropes of old school anime in there as well. The wasteland they stand in is like the random wastelands from every dragonball z fight ever. The close up of Miku yelling when they fire from the ship is a common in mecha anime for big last hope attacks, that normally finish the big bad at the end of a season. Saki and Misa's costumes at the end are designed in a way that is normally used for villains that later become allies, a common theme in early anime like Sailor Moon and DBZ. Kanami does a Sailor Moon pose in the shot with all five in their new outfits. I'm sure there's more, but this is pretty long already for a comment. Side note, love Akane's anime form being a bit more goofy and playful then the rest. Turning gorilla, and raising her arm in victory here an there. Also MISA's garter belt flask was a nice touch on her new outfit.

Single handedly, they wrote, played and illustrated the best song created about artists in confinement and the troubles most of them went thru! Sadly, many people will only see a funny anime MV. Band-Maid ALWAYS has many layers (and I''m pretty sure you're right about most of your detailed analysis, Wave). That's one more reason why this band is so important to my heart.

Wow! Great analysis! I was just going to point out the hip flask at 2:27 and Kanami playing with her teeth Jimi Hendrix-style at 2:35 - but those don't have any real symbolic meaning like you found. I did notice the "Dan dan di di dan dan" has a similar cadence to "Bang bang enchanted ready bang bang" in POGO so the callback to Cluppo is real.

Yes, Wave definitely caught the meaning of this video! To be honest, I missed it completely. My mind was fixated on the different things, mainly the war now raging on in Ukraine. cluppo's POGO! was definitely a prophetic song predicting that war, it was released just two days before it has started. POGO! includes those images of the peace sign, which look like pigeon's footprints. So, it WAS about the war. But COVID was by degrees more deadly than the current war, it killed millions, not tens of thousands. So, in all justice, COVID deserves to be recognized as a more serious evil, that Black Cloud covering the Earth.

There is no doubt that the last two years have been hell on the Maids and their ambitions. And this video, like so many other songs by them, communicate the frustrations of trying to bring their music to the world. But... the incredible resilience shown by them since they were almost disbanded and continuing until right now is something I admire. We need more of their upbeat look at the world and they will not be stopped no matter what.

Misa appears to be standing in the corridor of columns from the start of Don't you tell ME or dice MV? saiki first seen in a dark room with long blue light tubes surely a reference to blooming Kanami is in the studio from Alone Miku as you point out is in the Thrill set, that animation is a great piece of work by the way matching Mikus movements perfectly from the MV 4.17 of your video notice akane flying past and one of her drum sticks turns into a banana

I was doing some looking into who is credited as the Director in the video info. Name is Masato TAKEUCHI. There is not a lot of info on him but he going to be a unit director on an upcoming movie on Netflix called Drifting Home. But more importantly he done a lot of work at Studio Trigger in various roles. Anyone who has watched Kill La Kill or Little Witch Academy will recognize the animation style right away. What a breakdown... wave, i'm not heavy anime fans but its quite crazy i have memories "Nostalgic" with that old stuff anime "Sailor Moon Aka Moonlight Densetsu" its seems there has lucky "coincidence" because the main character of this anime have 5 person girl & each of them have different uniquely power character based within the colours... hhe... Anyway... I have one speculated statement too, that part ending is very similar with opening "One piece" anime when "the captain Monkey D.luffy" hold that black pirates flag... i assume it based with that anime... too hhe... so probably it means "Band Maid" officially ready to "unleash" they next project, ready to more discovers, seeking & expand they music again to all different part of this world... probably they also had plan to making a "World tour Concert" again & some of those plan maybe a new place for them, who knows... again its just my thought... hhe...

This I think points the time when Kanami was struggling during Covid...Finding it very hard being away from the others to the point the ladies were worried about her health had to intervene as she was getting very low(so I read)....So it shows Kanami reaching out and Miku trying to grab her hand as the darkness engulf's them......Showing how she cared about her fellow band member and friend...One of the best shots of the video....They truly are a magical and very special combination of ladies......"A Miracle Po!"....Miku quote...Love Mincho is shown as Green...My fav colour and fav member...though it's blasphemous to say you have a fav.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but the spaceship appears to be modelled after a popular Anime from the late 70's called Star Blazers / Space Battleship Yamato. The battleship fires a similar giant lazer beam called The Wave Motion Gun. The tech is a gift to Earth from Starsha of Iscandar, a planet in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Best Anime ever. My guess is that they watched it as kids. The plot is that the Gamilons bombard Earth with radioactive meteors, forcing humanity underground as the surface is unlivable. The old WW2 battleship Yamato is restored as a space battleship. Starsha sends her sister to Earth with wave motion technology with a message. Use the wave motion tech to warp to Iscandar. There they must retreive the Cosmo DNA which has the ability to cleanse Earth of radioactive destruction. They have only one year to make the journey or Earth will become unlivable.

Them not being US citizens, the only way they would be allowed entry would be if they were fully jabbed (Novak Djokovic is not gonna play in the US Open because he's not). Them being fully jabbed, under 40 and healthy, the coof wasn't going to be worse than a bad cold they would recover from in 2, 3 days.

Yeah ... reading through comments, multiple threads of narrative for opening anime sequence. Blooming, Domination, Alone, Dice, Thrill ... I'm sure anyone of us could include all those words in one sentence that describes their situation. All in anime form as each imagining and reflecting on their own achievements but minds getting clouded with the current covid situation. Still not sure why Saiki in Blooming (maybe after surgery... dual meaning/reason for coughing?), Akane in Domination (didn't she say she really had to up her game about then?). Wasn't sure about MISA and Dice but someone reminded me of her about to quit. Dice obviously as making a choice (one still has to choose to roll the dice and take that risk). Miku in Thrill learning to play guitar but this could also be seen as and a transition into a group memory (as someone pointed out) where they really began and freed them (and subsequently took off!) and the clouds of covid couldn't touch them. It was the pigeon that brought them together in the first place and it was the pigeon's inspiration that kept them going (and hello Cluppo). Someone said the first plateau was the promise of Budokan (stepping stone) and this is still a memory that should have happened. Then covid comes back big time - lockdowns - and they're knocked back down to earth to deal with the situation in real life. All wearing their current outfits as when remembering things, one tends to embellish (or"residue self-projection" I think was the Morpheus quote :)) and include wishes/regrets and things don't necessarily follow a timeline (e.g MISA in Dice because of the 'choice' definition rather than timeframe - cause it was way earlier than this!) Really like the explanation of Kanami and Miku reaching out for each other in the transition and still really like your explanation of Saiki re-inspiring them. Was it Saiki's idea for the online stuff (starting with Knotfest)? Song's growing on me, but think it's one that I'll really only appreciate it with the MV. However, I think the girls are just having fun and maybe we're not supposed to take everything so seriously... like with Sense, it was written with an animation (this one) in mind, and it fits perfectly. That'll do, I think Cheers

Very nice breakdown, thanks!! I saw only very few people talking about how Saiki seems to be the first one starting singing again when all the other members were too disappointed etc., around 6:10 in your video. Even Miku has to look at Saiki first, before she gets the energy to start playing and singing again. I tought that was a very nice compliment to Saiki, like Miku was saying: "It wasn't all me, you were a big part of keeping our spirits up".

I actually noticed it as well during the third or fourth time I watched it. That scene was pretty clear. I think Wave is right that it was probably the true story of them being crushed and desperate, and Saiki was the only one who became a pillar of strength and inspired them to press on.
@sendaran
@sendaran 2 жыл бұрын
There are a couple of other possible references in that part, intentional or not. It could be seen as a reference to the live stream that replaced the Budokan show and Saiki's speech before "about Us". Also, Miku is usually the MC and PR lead while Saiki has been made fun of in behind the scenes videos as being very camera shy if she's not singing, running away from the others when they approach her for a surprise "interview". Lately, Miku and Saiki have been doing a lot PR things together, including their radio show. So you could also look at the scene as Miku telling Saiki to try taking the lead this time while she is still there ready to support everyone.

These songs are hard, complex and will totally grow on you like a thousand pound R&R leech. The Maids in this format are relentless and powerful. The MV and their new battle gear is as expected: classy and awesome! Unleash (or Sense) will, in my thinking, be their new opener for their upcoming tour. The Magical girl transformation Miku's im pretty sure is reference to Madoka, Akane's looks like a reference to Mami from Madoka. That line's translation actually stood out to me as being a bit odd on my first listen: "I'm still chasing my dreams, they're nowhere, just only catch them" ”I'm still chasing my dreams, どこにもないから掴むだけ” (doko ni mo nai kara tsukamu dake) doko ni mo nai = nowhere/not anywhere kara = from tsukamu = to grab dake = just I'd translate it as ”I'm still chasing my dreams, (I'll) just grab/seize them out of nowhere." My interpretation when I first heard it it was that they were saying they'll achieve their dreams forcefully if they have to. They'll *make* them come true. Well, Wave Potter interprets an anime MV. Let me confess that I am totally sold on your interpretation (and I bet many people watching this video would be 😉 ). That does make me wonder..... what other forms of art are you able to solidly interpret? For that matter, how many of us would have been able to watch such videos to make appropriate interpretations (which may not be the same as yours) like this video have? Does that extend to other art forms? Do each of us innately have the ability to interpret stuff like this if we care to ponder over them, or are each of us more attuned to certain art forms than other art forms? So many questions, such wild but inspiring thoughts, and so totally irrelevant to your video. Let's just say this was brilliantly done and you have my thanks for laying out such interesting perspectives about their MV.

Animes are a big thing in Japan. The Japanese movies are not so prominent, and therefore, I'm very glad they have finally switched to the graphical genre which suits their culture the most. In animes, you can draw an elaborate picture and explain a lot of things, while in movies it would take very skilful actors and a huge budget. I was always thinking about it - they should have used animes long time ago to carry their message through to the world. Now they are under PONY CANYON, which is an anime studio, and finally, they have an anime with deep meaning! Kudos to them!

@@VladimirChupin For me, anime is not just a big thing in Japan. I've been watching them for more than 20 years. :) And at least here in Germany, their popularity has been increasing noticeably in recent years. But yeah, I also think that alone because of P.C.'s closeness to the anime industry, the move to them has already been pretty worth it and will surely continue to pay off in a big way in the future. And for the apparently still very young animation studio that made this video, it could also be very beneficial. At least I wouldn't mind seeing more of them in this style in the future. Could Miku turning into a pigeon represent her becoming cluppo and going solo? She changed her look away from being a maid (Miku) and took another form (cluppo). She still has her maid hat on while she's a pigeon, possibly representing that even though she looks different, she knows where she came from and hasn't let that go. Plus, she's off being active while the other four are stagnant (musically speaking, anyway), she's an animal while the other four stay human (no gorilla metamorphosis for Akane) , but she returns and shifts from her altered form back into maid Miku. That's when B-M resumes and starts being active again in the video. As far as the Sailor Maid transformations, I know Saiki at least has been a Sailor Moon fan for a long time. Also, Miku's throwing off some pink energy feathers at 0:36 if you go frame by frame. It looks they've been energized by Gambit from the X-Men. I think it's telling that "Unleash!" is written on a plateau that the maids are on. They had symbolically been working their way up the sides of that plateau throughout their time together as a band and were on top. I believe this represents them achieving a goal rather than the stagnation that a plateau might usually represent, that goal being chosen to play at Budokan. Then the big fart cloud of death comes rolling in and cancels that, and the maids looks disappointed, understandably so. The video of them watching the Budokan announcement is easy to find and you can see and hear how excited they are even though it's not the best-quality video; it wasn't just another show to them! Another thing to notice is that when it shows the faceless fans watching the maids on their devices, the screens and thus the maids are the brightest thing in the room. They would be even if they weren't throwing off the sparklies. After their reunion with cluppo-turned-Miku, they're the light in the darkness for us. At the end of the video, they're back on that plateau again - back where they were before the pandemic cloud enveloped the planet. After giving the planet an inoculation, they're once again united and looking toward their bright future, the darkness nowhere in sight. That's my take, adding on to what Wave said.

I'm not a big fan of reaction videos but this is a very good analysis. Makes you wonder whether the band worked closely with the music video producer and animators. There are too many intimate details for this to come from one writer / producer and it certainly caters to the fan base who quite readily picked up on a lot of the subtle cues strewn throughout the video. That also makes it well worth watching multiple times. Brilliant piece of production with a great song.

@@K.H.D710 Yeah, each BAND-MAID song is like that. They like to package the message in the most compressed and dense form. That's what makes BAND-MAID different, actually. Virtuoso musicians normally weave their thoughts like a long story, which is like a picturesque road unravelling before your eyes as you walk it. BAND-MAID, on the other hand, is like a teleport device, which leads you through a very complicated procedure, but after three or four minutes you find yourself transported from point A to point B. Some people like it, some people don't. But it's a radical departure from the normal musical practices, there can be no doubt about it.

Small pigeon addressed this very idea when she was asked exactly what does world domination mean? She replied that it simply meant Band-Maid would be known in every country on earth. Not that they would be the best band in the world or have more "hits" than anyone else. Simply that they (and by implication their message) would be known everywhere.
