Maiko is an apprentice Geisha, both still exist in Japan, but only in fairly small numbers. When this came out in 2018 they changed their whole website for the day and said they were now known as Band Maiko.....then reverting to BAND-MAID the following day. A year later they released Gion-cho again dressing up as Maiko and with this single were six other reworked tracks....including Secret Maiko lips. Gion-cho is the only original Band-Maiko track. If all goes according to plan I am off to Japan in February....both to see the country.....and BAND-Maid at Budokan!

@@threemonkeysk About the lipstick. Maybe they were having a in joke that although they are Maiko, the lipstick refers to them being so talented that they consider themselves to be Geiko already? It's just a thought.

Yeah, they're all wearing their "Colors". And a Maiko is an apprentice Geish. So it's a play on words. The song 'Secret My Lips' becomes 'Secret Maiko Lips'. They had some traditional Japanese instruments like Kanami has the Koto. And since MISA plays the bass she had the Shamisen., and Akane has the Tsuzumi. If you're digging the whole BAND-MAIKO thing check out 'Gion Cho', cause, that's all there is. We didn't get a BAND-MAIKO song this year, but maybe next year.

One little piece in both this and Gion-cho is Akane's appetite. It's why she starts her noodles when the others are just staring, and in Gion-Cho, they do a tea ceremony. The others are having tea, and she's again eating noodles in the background. She's also eating in a couple of scenes of the "Don't You Tell Me" music video kzbin.info/www/bejne/qni7q5uujbuco7s People normally request the live version for this, but it's not on youtube currently, but that's OK as this is probably their best video, as useless, then rebellious maids at a high society ball.

Band Maiko. I consider this as a side project rather than an aprils fools joke. They do a tremendous job adapting their music to Japanese culture by showing great respect for it. To give you an idea, the lyrics are adapted to the Kyoto dialect, the place where the Geisha worked. The videos are an art work of setting and clothing. For the occasion they also change their names (Hatoko, Fujiki, Akatsuki, Kanoemi and UMEMISA). They released an EP last year as Band Maiko. I luv it...all of it... don't forget the "Gion-Cho" MC (the only original song from the whole BAND-MAIKO thing... or the original song: "Secret My Lips") There is a nice thing to notice - when everyone stops to look at the camera, Akane just starts eating the noodles. Now, you should do the "Gion-Cho" MC too... where there is a similar situation but where everyone is elegantly drinking tea but Akane (always Akane) further back is eating noodles... because she is a pro-noodle-eater... well, she seems to be a pro-eater... she doesn't cook, she just eats... lol...

@@Detrucci OH, BTW... all these BAND-MAIKO songs were re-written to match the Kyoto dialect (it's such a pity that they didn't do a MV for each song, the version of "Screaming" upgrades a fast frantic song into a "really wild and lunatic" status), but what is also interesting about the "Gion-Cho" one is that it comes with subtitles, so you get to read the translation in English as well...

There's also a seven song BAND-MAIKO EP, released April 1st, 2019. It's so good. Besides the original song 'Gion-cho' and last years song 'Secret Maiko Lips' it includes MAIKO versions of five other BAND-MAID songs. The "ansan" version of 'anemone is really pretty. They're all great. Like 'Secret Maiko Lips' from last year, they changed the words and phrasing of their singing to "Kansai", the traditional dialect used in the old Capital of Kyoto that is identified with Geisha culture. They also adopted special names for the BAND-MAIKO group. They are: Miku = 鳩子 Hatoko. Saiki = 富士姫 Fujiki. Kanami = 叶笑 Kanoemi. Misa = 梅美沙 Umemisa. Akane = 紅月 Akatsuki.

Kyoto can't be "identified with geisha culture" because there aren't any geisha in Kyoto. In Kyoto they're invariably referred to as "geiko". They're "geisha" in Tokyo, and Tokyo's geisha culture and Kyoto's geiko culture are different in various ways, including dialect, terminology, manners, and customs. (Some other cities have similar entertainers and use either "geisha" or "geiko", but Tokyo and Kyoto are the largest centers.) Also, the traditional dialect of Kyoto isn't called "Kansai". "Kansai" is the region of Japan in which the cities of Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe are located; "Kansai-ben" (more properly "Kinki Hogen", though they don't entirely overlap) is the general dialect of the Kansai region, and the Japanese refer to Kyoto speech, which is a sub-dialect of Kansai-ben, as "Kyo-kotoba" or "Kyoto-ben", not as "Kansai". Of the five Band-Maiko names, two - Kanoemi and Akatsuki - are common, traditional maiko names; the other names have far less commonly (if at all) been used by actual maiko. Each Band-Maiko name has some connection, by meaning or sound of the kanji characters, with the original Band-Maid member's name.

Band-Maiko is a side project of Band-Maid. Band-Maiko has released a mini album and two singles. Every single Band-Maiko song is a Band-Maid previously released song with only one exception which is Gion-cho. Band-Maid wrote that one exclusively for Band-Maiko. BTW only two of nine songs by Band-Maiko were released on April fools day which is not even noted in Japan. Thanks for helping to promote them.

The instrument that Misa has that the start and you hear in the back ground is a Shamisen (3 string guitar like instrument), the one on the ground later that you asked what is that is a Koto (Japanese Harp) and the hand drum is a Kotsuzumi.

I see this as .. so many people see J Rock and immediately dismiss it as not real Rock or "Anime" Rock .. this is them in your face .. Yes we are Japanese and proud of our culture and even with that we can kick your ass with Hard Rock better than you've heard before.

J Rock is real rock, just because it is a different culture, doesn't mean it is better or worse. I happen to like Anime music too so I wouldn't use that as an insult...if anything alot of Anime music is incredible. Nothing but respect from me :)

Nice reaction! Based on Secret my lips, sounds such as shamisen and Japanese drums are added in an arrangement. Not only that, but it's difficult if you don't understand Japanese, but the lyrics have been changed to Kyoto accent. If you enjoy the fusion of Japanese instruments and rock, I recommend the "和楽器バンド-Wagakki Band". Please try Wagakki-Band!

If you like Japanese culture mixed with modern music, the go to group for that is Wagakki Band, who combine traditional instruments and vocal styles with rock, metal, jazz, and more. A good starting point is the video for their song Senbonzakura, which has more views than BabyMetal's Gimme Chocolate.

You need to go to Tokyo for sure/. The guitar type thing is a Shamisan ( 3 strings) , played with a Geisha's hair clip as a pick, deep tpm style drums are called Taiko.. the bamboo flute in the background is a Shakuhatchi (forgive the spelling if wrong.) there some wooden blocks and stick used as well which you often hear in Kabuki theater performances and of course the white face makeup from there too . Yes heaps of culture in there for us. If you like this music blend you should check out Wagaki Band clips. Live ones are insane. they are a 9 piece band with singer using Enka folk style adapted to rock.

The 3-stringed instrument is a shamesin, the large flat zinther-like instrument is a koto, I'm not sure what type of traditional drum they are using. If you like the combo of rock and traditional Japanese music then you must check out Wagakki Band, which is an 8 person rock band using a shamesin, koto, shakuhachi (flute) and wadaiko drums as well as electric guitar, bass and rock drum set. The lead singer sings in a traditional Shigin style. Try Ikusa or Senbonzakura.

If you liked the blending of traditional Japanese instruments with rock music you totally should check out Wagakki Band - A good way to start would be the music video to Senbonzakura (engl. "One Thousand Cherry Trees"), their cover of an original vocaloid song (Annotation: a vocaloid basically being a database of voice samples by real singers, used to simulate actual singing.
