Maiko is an apprentice geisha. Instead of standard japanese they used kyoto dialect (which is used by geishas) so the lyrics sounded different. The games they play in the video are traditional geisha games. Akane is notorious foodie so asking her not to eat is an impossibility...

band-maikoの面白さは京都の人が話す言葉に歌詞が変換されているということにつきます。京都の言葉はとても柔らかく優しい感じになっているのですが、この柔らかく包まれた言葉の真意をきちんと捉えられないと野暮な人と思われるんだろうなと感じます。日本の中心として千年以上の歴史を持つ都市が京都ですから、そういったところは洗練されていると感じます。 ちなみにband-maikoは小鳩さんが舞妓さんのカッコをしてみたかったからという非常に個人的趣味の結果ということらしいです。

Saiki sings the same or very similar lyrics, but in Kyoto dialect, thus sounding quite different in intonation (and other ways) from the original, and I also know the different dialects give a different feel and different associations to songs and spoken words in Japan, but I do not know what associations are specific to the Kyoto dialect. Also as 'BABYMETAL LOVER' said in a comment to another reaction: "Maiko is an apprentice geiko (not exactly same as geisha) in Kyoto, western Japan. Their jobs consist of performing songs, dances, and playing the shamisen or Koto (Traditional Japanese musical instruments) for visitors during feasts."

April fools joke was that they said officially changed their name Band Maid to Band Maiko and relaesed this video and even single. Their Facebook account name also changed. All fans are very confused then they said sorry it was joke and changed their name back to Band Maid.

It's so interesting to see that the two socially odd ones, Saiki and Misa, seemed to be the most comfortable with this big change in style. Saiki looks like a sophisticated lady, and they got Misa to sing like a wolf! The girls got a lot of feedback how beautiful they looked, even asked if this style wouldn't suit them. But they said you can't perform in kimono, it makes any movements are very restricted. Akane said it is completely impossible to play the drums like that. Anyway, a great prank.

Oh cool, you posted this one while I was sleeping. Looks like the other commenters said pretty much everything about the video I was going to. Good job, other commenters! Some traditional drinking games in the video. : ) The BAND-MAID members are already beautiful. Pretty stunning in traditional dress and make-up.

Hey there!, here's what you want to know about the song and a little petition, thanks for the reactons! all of this videos are really good for the girls: Why is it an April fools joke? You're looking in the wrong direction looking for a joke inside the song, the real "joke" was that they were changing the whole maid concept to a maiko concept, they even changed their names in social network and on the video for traditional Kyoto dialect names, Kobato became Hatoko, Saiki became Fujiki, Kanami became Kanoemi, Misa became Uemisa and Akane became Akatuki. Kobato said that they were changing the whole thing from Maids to Maikos, when the day passed they all reverted back to normal and even Kobato published that they were Maids again. Curious things: What is a Maiko? it's kinda like a "Geisha apprentice", they all played traditional Maiko instruments in the video, and the part where Saiki throws the little fan and lands open is also a traditional Maiko game meant to entertain. The reason Akane eats the soba noodle is because she is famous for eating a ton and not getting fat she can eat around 100 bowls of wanko soba noodles. Misa is actually howling in the video she confirmed this herself on her twitter. Petition: If you want to hear them live, please look for "Take me higher" Live version, you will absolutely love it, it has a bass vs guitar solo battle in the middle. I saw them live in mexico last week they absolutely rock, they are top quality material when playing live. If possible, please react to "don't let me down" from them! I think it would be interesting, the whole song is actually in english. If you want to listen more Kobato singing (The rythm guitar) there are songs where she actually leads, like Time or Rock in me, Many other songs have shared parts like Arcadia girl or Freezer, this is most likely done because when they play live, there are a couple of songs that are very challenging for Saiki, like Puzzle and I can't live without you, it requieres a lot of effrot from Saiki, when she sings these she relies on Kobato to have her voice rest for a couple of minutes, in the concert I went in mexico for example, Saiki ran out of voice while singing I can't live without you, around the middle of the song she couldn't kept on and Kobato took the lead for 1 verse more or less, on the next song her voice was a little off, so in the next one Kobato sang, Saiki left, and then they played an instrumental song, when Saiki came back her voice was on point again. They didn't do encore, Kobato jokingly said that she saw Saiki drinking lots of beer and getting drunk, but she was most likely protecting her throat.
