My wife is an Evans and William Evans was her grandfather's brother (GrandUncle). When we traveled to Normandy to tour the battlefields, the tour leader took us to the village where his C47 crashed. There is a monument in the crossroads in the shape of a C47 tail with the crew and paratroop stick members' names recorded...including Evans. It's nice that they are not forgotten and still honored today by the French people of Normandy.

First Sergeant Evans did not have to serve, he worked at a shipbuilding company which would've deferred him from service. He did enlist though and volunteered for the parachute infantry. He was disliked by some Sergeants in Easy companies and was good buddies with others. On D-Day plane 66 was hit by German AA fire, crashed, and exploded. All onboard were killed including Evans and Easy company's commander Lt. Meehan His dog-tags were found 44 years later in Normandy by a farmer.

I'm seeing all these comments about how Cpt Sobel is an ass, and how no-one likes him. But Winters, and all the other members of Easy Company agree that Cpt Sobel was the main reason they survived the war. Because Sobel did not accept any failure, and he pushed them to their limits.
@alessiman
@alessiman 7 жыл бұрын
Easy Company credited Sobel for their tough conditioning which helped them immensely. What they couldn't ignore was his total lack of combat awareness. Winters has stated that if Sobel was ordered to take the 33 guns at Brecourt Manor Sobel would have gone with a frontal assault resulting in certain death for all those on that mission

He was. This role came in the middle of the stint as the goof role he had in Friends. I was a bit curious to why on the D-Day landings had ALL of the CO's and Company HQ Staff in one singular plane. If it got hit, like it actually did, a lot of important figures would get killed, which happened. I would spread out the staff, CO's and other officers and soldiers-of-importance amoung other troop transports, even if some got hit, the chance for ALL to get killed would be far less. Just an odd choice that resulted in this.

I guess, they foresaw that some planes would miss the drop-zones and therefore getting together any group of commanding officers to plan any kind of operations would be even more difficult. Hiding behind a tree is cover. Cover is when bullets stop and can't hit you. Concealment is when they can't see you but you are still vulnerable to being shot. Hollywood films used much older men in films and it gave later generations the idea that soldiers in WWII were older men.

don trotter i personally thought that it was a good training ploy. In real combat shit like that can pop out of the blue in reaction to changing circumstances, mostly due to unexpected enemy movements and or actions. You can be doing one thing like eating then need to hall ass to react to the situation. The enemy isn’t going to make sure their push fits in your schedule. As for a real example they had deal with during the battle of the bulge E company and the rest of them were scheduled for rnr, but due to the sudden advance they were thrown back into the line at a moments notice. It’s quite similar to what sobel here did well it sucks at the time it definitely help prepare them for this kind of situation.

they used to think we could train men to survive better without water. that was the point of the no-water run that fassbender failed. today we know better - that would just lead to their deaths quicker.

I always felt bad for Evans. He could see that Sobel was a complete ass - but he could never say it - because of his job. So the man had to just grit his teeth and carry out Sobel's orders. .

@stevekaczynski3793 4 жыл бұрын
He also became the target for some of the unpopularity levelled at Sobel. As an NCO he was a safer target than Sobel. See 4:42 when the ball is thrown at his jeep. (Later thought) Although it is barely audible, I think I hear one of the ballplayers calling him an "asshole" as he gets into his jeep.

Anyone notice the disappearing heavy machine gun on Christiensen's (sp) shoulder? Scenes shot from behind show it cradled on his right shoulder and in Right Hand, from the front It's gone. A stealth machine gun!

+Kha Ngo Actually his representation of the movie was a little bit too much on him, his strict drill actually made the 101st airbone tough as it was. He was actually a good officer by all means, but the movie just did not show it, the director later show his apologies to the Captain Family

+mcnallyrd3 Lets see it like this, Napoleon and Alexander the Great were both great military leaders but i can bet a lot, that they would suck at training their soldiers. That is why most armied drill sergeant turn ordinary men into stuff soldiers but the "chocolate bar" Lt. are the ones leading them into combat.

I don't think that is toadying. He is in the position he is in and therefore has to keep a straight face when the CO throws a wobbler. Which I think Pegg did rather well, while still sometimes letting it slip to show that he has his own opinion on matters.

In the early days, there were alwasy things that we borrowed and went crazy with the knew people we were married to! All sorts! They were welch and often different with total company of us and them and others too - it was so much fun that we laughed adn luaghed and all had a close cuddle... we only aw it as friendly and often found that we were able to be alongside different types but suddenly we realised that were also pretty much all the same- back then it was so similar that today it is hard to believe it. bang bang went the guns and many fall over - even the welch!

+steven hewitt He was, actually. As far as I'm aware, he was killed the same way, or at least in a similar way, as what was depicted in Band of Brothers. "1st Sgt. Bill Evans died on 6 June 1944, on the same plane with 1st Lieutenant Thomas Meehan. The plane was shot down by enemy fire and crashed. " - this is a picture of the real William Evans. www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=29941348 Hope this helps!
