Luffy not listening to back stories really means a lot, whether it's a villain or a good guy, he doesn't care about what they did in the past, what matters to him is what they are in the present, which is why you will get to see his interesting dynamic with a lots of people in future that you never expected.

Those episodes really were so amazing, it hits so hard. I think my favorite thing about these is Luffy not trying to find out what Nami's deal was. I feel like it gets misunderstood a lot but everyone kept telling the crew that once they knew what Nami's was doing they would leave. Luffy of course wouldn't have but even entertaining that would be counterproductive to who Luffy is as a character. Luffy doesn't care what the problem is, he simply waited for Nami to ask him to settle the issue. I love the solidarity of letting Nami do as she will but refusing to get chased off, he was just a supportive friend, silently letting her know he's here, he doesn't care what her problem is cause it doesn't matter, he would throw down for her no matter what. She's his friend. He didn't need any reason beyond that. Ugh I just love this show so much! Awesome reaction, glad I got to cry with you guys!

We legit talked for like 30 min on this subject alone! It may have been a little too all over the place for the Final Cut though it seems. One of the theories being thrown around was exactly what you said! It’s cool that there’s enough to sink your teeth into as far as the complexity of the characters and their situations. Yup. Plus let’s be honest: luffy doesn’t care about a person’s past or life details due to his attraction span. This is also made perfectly clear when he tells nami in orange town after avenging chow chow something like “you seem to have your reasons, I don’t want to hear about them though.”

@@forastero54321 that’s actually opposite of my point. I agree that Luffy would care if one of the crew wanted to tell him their past, and asked him to listen themselves. My point here is that Nami’s past was framed as a reason for them to leave, to not help her. So Luffy simply didn’t listen. He didn’t care because he already knew he would help her either way, he knew even sitting and listening (not to mention listening to it NOT from Nami but from her sister) would give the impression that he could be convinced to leave Nami to her fate. On the scene in Orange Town you have to consider that Nami had shown that she would assume the worst about him without knowing anything about him. So his words feel more like an “look I get you were pissed but I don’t really care right now cause that’s just rude” She didn’t give him due respect as another human, so he didn’t give her any either. Plus she wasn’t offering up that info, so why would he ask? Luffy isn’t the type to go looking for information you may or may not be ready to talk about. The idea that Luffy doesn’t care about his crews past feels weirdly off putting when he will sit and listen to Vivi’s story, or the mermaid princess. He does care, but him caring about her past, knowing it or not, had no baring on whether or not he was gonna help her.

"Walk to Arlong Park" just hits different in the anime. Also Arlong stomping on Bellemere's arm, that scene really shocked me during my first watch through. I hate Arlong but I love his villain laugh haha, I love all the times they have just his laughter in the background Sha ha ha ha ha, like Nami for sure has PTSD and nightmares. I prefer Gen and the village knowing Nami's plan, I love the line when Gen says they didn't want their hopes to hold down Nami in case she ever wanted to run away (paraphrasing). I also enjoy the little moments of the crew chilling on the Going Merry. Yay you've almost reached where the live action left off, enjoy!

Hits different! To see the four of them hellbent on one purpose. That’s a moment right there. Honestly that was pretty brutal. Was pretty shocking actually. Nami had a really difficult life for sure. And the build up until now really let that sink in when it needed to hit the hardest. 100% agree! That added a whole other level of emotional weight underneath that wasn’t quiet as heavy in LA. Fun easter egg from the live action, in ep 1 when Axe-hand ask Nami to introduce her self, she says she is a new transfer from branch #77 which is the one Arlongs crew wipes out here. Yeah they didnt have the time in the live action for Bellemere, which is super sad because she is such a badass. Nami's Voice actress did a haunting performance. The help me moment Emily the actor in the LA did a great job but them doing it line for line was a bit weird since Luffy actually knew what was going on this time. Though he was just going along with Nami's venting, still that feels a little off for luffy, since he doesnt lie or even stretch the truth directly.

Well now you guys have seen "the walk" which was the other iconic scene besides the one with Luffy and Nami. This comes back a few times when the Straw Hats all squad up at the same place in force. Each time is crazier with a bigger crew, higher stakes, and scarier enemies. Speaking of enemies yes the villains do get much scarier. Often saga villians are the worst kf the worst. Like Arlong for the East Blue.

You guys have just seen a small piece arc of what make One piece a peek fiction. Soo many hearth warming moment in the future awaits will tear your eyes. The build up might take times, the way they introduce character , background, struggle, and world building, lore, motivations, are superb. Even It will make you tears for the enemy characters . It has deep lore, myth, character and foreshadowing for past 20 years , small detail from every episodes will be connected in the presents times. Don't worry just rematch the ep later on to reconnect the dot of the past foreshadowing because it's very detailed. For now just enjoy the moment "Nakamas ".

Nami's VA voiced her lungs out man, like rent was due🔥🔥🔥. I feel like Luffy's handling of the situation is when Luffy's emotional intelligence is basically plastered on the wall, for those who hadn't already picked up on it by now. My favourite line of this arc is when Luffy asks " Which one of you is Arlong?" Worth noting, in the last video drop I discussed the idea of information in this world; its sources, how the spread of information, tales, legends and mythos, etc does so much for the world building (because of what it makes us wonder). As a person who primary views and experiences this story as a fantasy epic instead of a shonen, I have always loved Johnny and Yosaku's speech about the legend in the making that the crew is. I think people overlook the weight of those words and how they are sprinkles of just how these guys might shake up the world some day. They add to the would be legendary tale the strawhats' journey might end up being, " Burn their images into your eyes"

Gen with that line of "She invited me and a friend" was a missing line, that ended up as a complaint in LA by many.. Bellemere did end up telling the truth, but LA version made her look what Arlong said here as "Pathetic love"

I think they did a great job in the LA with these specific episodes. But there's something about the anime that just hits. I do think the anime does a better job showing Nami's desperation than in the LA and of couse that's probably because of time straints. The animation in her face as the situation just get worse, her desperation in keeping the town safe and then how, at that moment, it was all for nothing as the town rose up against Arlong. As mentioned the money she gathered coated in blood. The subtle hints of her character not being a killer, by saving Zoro and Ussop shedding her own blood to do it. Shows she doesn't care what happens to her as long as her friends and family are safe. Great job, guys! Can't wait to see your reaction to the next episodes!

before the fight, we of course have to get into the pain, i dont remember how the Live Action told her story, but i imagine that it paled to the Anime. and yeah, Nami IS both trying to protect them and rectify this without fighting, as she has been working toward that goal for 8 long years. Sanji's simpage never really gets better, he can play it cool at times, but he's too hot blooded for his own good.

The Walk to Arlong Park...in LA..just could not happen given the things/route they took... Here, only Usopp knows the direction to the park.. LA, no one knew..and not even Johnny/Yosaku were present to hype up the moment.. Only Nami knew the direction in LA, so she was there with everyone... and if Nami was shown Walking with them, with Badass music...the Community would have destroyed the LA😐

First of , don't get me wrong , i still found the Live Action excellent . That said , i don't think that time constraints explains all choices here . I might be wrong but some choices through the show and that arc , felt like American TV show streamlining and their usual drama tropes and beats . It would not take more effort or airtime to have the village , Nojiko and Gen aware of Nami's actions . The change does not even help the story here nor make more sense . Seems to me that they just prefer that whole angst and family drama angle seen in other US shows . It was the same imho with the LA immediately spilling the beans about Nami's upcoming betrayal and internal turmoil , instead of having that big surprise during Baratie . They likely feared making Nami unlikeable for too many episodes

But here, the way they built Nami’s struggle up, all the different developments between characters and Nami’s family…dude. It hits way harder here in the anime. Even though you've watched the live action, it feels a little different when you watch the One Piece anime... maybe you get more emotional... that's what I got after watching the second version. both are equally good but the anime is clearer and the emotions can really be felt... keep continuing with the next episode of the Mugiwara Pirates vs Arlong Pirates battle...

Some say it's got to do with western culture adaptation, in Asia most love and care is shown via action not words, however to some people not used to that, they may perceive Luffy as uncaring and not what was supposed to be implied - Luffy doesn't care about your past! he will help you just because you are his friend

It's crazy that one episode can get you emotional over and over again no matter how many time you watch it. Of course it's not just the episode but the bond the series gives you with all the characters in the build up to this point. I'm glad One Piece is now the #1 sold comic of the world far outselling even Superman. It's such a wholesome watch and should be enjoyed by everyone. Maybe Oda will make this world one piece and bring us one peace... :)

Backstories in one piece always amazing, once the flashback ends we can never see the character or situation same way. It's just the start ,there are many heartbreaking backstories ahead , not just of main characters and villans but also of non significant side characters which always adds more emotions and depth the fighting. Wait till you find out why arlong always mentions his species and calls humans inferior, everything is connected in one piece, every question gets answered we just have be patient.

The LA was entertaining, but the lack of episodes (and budget restrictions) really hurt certain moments. The fight at Arlong Park and Nami's backstory are so much better in the manga/anime. A bit OT but on the contrary i've seen some people complain that they changed Sanji's goodbye in the LA, that they wanted to see him kneel down, but especially after seeing LA Luffy screaming "of course i will!" with his hands up, i do think they were right to change it (even if i do love the anime vers). Anime Luffy doing it, plus the help me scene, was so emotional, while i personally found the LA version a bit cringe. Nothing against Inaki, but some things simply don't translate well in an LA.

You know it’s so vague to the point where I don’t really remember it, it’s been a very long time since I started it a long time ago, and I love that. Earlier on when I tried watching it, I wasn’t really into older art styles, so I think that dampened my experience. Even after a few years, Nami's backstory touches me. I remember lying in bed and crying and wanting Luffy to help me. I knew it was impossible and that made it even more painful 😅 Now everything is fine, it was just hard for me then. I wish I could fly. In the live-action, they really screw up having Luffy learn about Nami's history with the town and Arlong Pirates. In the manga/anime this is a huge reveal about Luffy's character vs Zoro or even others. Luffy doesn't know a thing, and what's more he doesn't care. He never once gave up on Nami, and not b/c he knew she was "acting" when she betrayed them, but only because she is his navigator and he has made up his mind about that. Plus he's incredibly selfish and childish about these sorts of things.

Definitely agree. The way the anime did it had so much more depth and it was really heavy. It changed really the entire dynamic of the villagers, nami, the strawhats ect. It wasn’t the worst thing ever as far as the way the LA portrayed it. But the difference to the anime was night and day.
