Nice! Watching a video demonstrating an OLED flaw, while also seeing the DSE of my LCD on the test footage :D Buying a TV is picking your poison, BUT I have to say that nowadays every decent TV is looking really good. A couple of years ago we had too dark OLEDs, no local dimming on LCDs (also edge lit garbage), no HDR, no 4k... I just enjoy todays TVs! My wife isnt perfect either, but I still love her... kinda :P

Great video. I have a 83" C1 and have noticed vertical banding especially with panning shots since I purchased it and was wondering if it was defective. You seem to be the only KZbinr mentioning this and I appreciate that. It gives us peace of mind knowing that it should be expected and not a defective panel.

I had pretty bad banding on my 65 inch LG C1 earlier this year. So much so that I had to return it to costco. I first noticed the banding while viewing a panning shot in foggy conditions in The Crown using Dolby Vision on Netflix. I just picked up a 65 inch C2 and its a very clean panel with very minimal banding.

Really like what you're doing with your channel. Keep up the excellent work. As for OLED's fatal flaw I believe that as long as you (and the other youtube influencers) are forced to watch their TVs in special conditions of a darkened room then the real fatal flaw of OLEDs is brightness, not banding.

Listen man.. I can't thank you enough for this video. You're absolutely right and just telling it like it is. I have a 55" LG C1 Oled. And I mess with settings chasing a perfect picture since I got it. The problem I deal with is some banding, but mostly judder. I'm no professional but I navigate very well with settings. I make adjustments all the time and not enjoying my TV the way I should be. I was going to go get the 65" C2 hoping judder would be none existing but I doubt it. I just wish I could have a panel with nice smooth movement, and not go nearly black with the auto dimming feature in 25 mins of content. Auto dimming should disable if you protectively keep Oled brightness below 85 since you significantly lower risk of burn in. But regardless you're right! I'm constantly looking for imperfections and not enjoying what is absolutely amazing about this tv.. I needed to hear this. I've been driving myself crazy. I feel a new appreciation for my TV. I need to enjoy. My settings now are really close to perfect. There's some judder I just can't get rid of. But hey these things exist and no panel is perfect.

I don't play games, but I see banding in the 5-15% grey test patterns and in panning shots in mostly dark scenes in movies. This is on the 83A90J. I've been told that all OLEDs at those sizes have this problem to a degree so not worth it doing anything about it. It was a surprise to me hearing in this video that even if test patterns are perfect banding may show up in content.

Banding is on every wrgb oled panel.
@joggometer5393
@joggometer5393 Жыл бұрын
To complete it: Banding is present on every OLED panel (WRGB/QD). It is related to the voltage-related control of the OLED pixels, which are very sensitive to low voltage (close to black). The content shown here and similar only makes the banding of the panel clearly visible. It's not the content that's to blame.

Brian, THANK YOU. I know this video is old, but I may have just watched it in the nick of time. I just scheduled a return on my 83” G2 because I noticed banding on a grey test pattern (around 30% oddly enough). It’s pretty light and not noticeable except sometimes when panning in dark scenes. There are definitely big verticals blocks/bars on the test slide but again, very light. Do you think this qualifies as normal/acceptable? Seems like most people see banding at 5-10% (which I do not) as opposed to 30%. Would love to get your opinion on this before the TV guys come and grab this thing in two days!

IDK what else are you talking about, but I have an LG OLED E9 at only 35% Oled Light (SDR) and after 2 years it has permanent Burn-In on the top and bottom of the screen. I use it daily as an all-purpose PC monitor, but I've been pretty cautious and content is normally always changing between desktop, movies, games, browser, etc. All OLED protections (Screen Shift, Pixel Refresher, Logo Dimming, etc) are switched on since day one. Short and Long refresh cycles aren't able to correct the Burn-In from top and bottom Windows/Chrome/Explorer bars. So just a fair warning: BURN-IN IS VERY REAL. No drama though, only visible on very light backgrounds. Cheers!

@Miskatonik
@Miskatonik 2 жыл бұрын
@@micker9830 Yes, I knew all that from day one. But still, watched RTINGS long-term Burn-In tests and my E9 was even newer and allegedly less prone to burn. Also, again, 35% Oled Light at all times, which is VERY low because I use it almost always in a dark room. Auto-hide Windows bar, auto-hide desktop icons, dark mode, etc. and very often changing content from browser to movies or whatever, not the same static image for hours. But even with all protections and precautions, Burn-In just happens. As said, NO drama, 55 OLEDs are dirty cheap these days and my previous 4K HDR Led TV was actually twice as expensive at the time. Just stating that despite all the precautions in the world, OLEDs are not yet suitable as PC monitors. This is not as clear as you think, since that is the use the 48' OLEDs are getting from many buyers. Maybe the new QD-OLEDs will be even less prone to burn, not worried tbh, nor I regret my purchase for my use case. Just sharing my experience 🙂

If you need it for hrs upon hrs of web browsing or any software that's static, then yeah I bet it can happen at such low oled light.

I didn't try tests for banding when I got my 65 inch Panasonic hz2000 as drive me mad.. and fortunately I haven't seen any problems with films in the dark.. Although Panasonic are back doing 77inch screens so was hoping to get one when I move... and for what they charge I would not put up with any faults...!!! Keep the vids coming brother 👍🏽

Hi Brian, I was hoping to get your opinion. I recently got a 77” C2 Oled. Out of the box is had crazy banding, 20-30 thin lines you could see in all content. After 3 automatic 4 hours cycles it stopped being visible in all content. Now I just see the bands on more uniform colors when panning. Not 20-30 lines. Really more like 2 bands, 1 more noticeable than the other. The bands are at the 1/3 and 2/3 point on the screen. I have 330 hours on it now and am 20 days away from my return/exchange period ending (Costco). Do virtually all Oleds have banding that can be seen on panning uniform colors or should it only be apparent in darker greys? TV doesn’t have noticeable pink tint so I am scared to play the panel lottery. Just feel like the crazy amount of banding fresh out the box made me feel like I lost the panel lottery.

Just opened and plugged in my 77” C3… mondo banding on this just at the startup screen. I had an 83” C3 prior and returned it because so much dirty screen affect. It had banding out of the box also, and a huge pink line on the right side. It went away the next day after an update. But it was the dirty screen effect or foggy during white scenes and panning. For paying $3500 I just felt cheated. I just don’t understand how reviewers NEVER mention it and their panels look PERFECT during the reviews. Heck, even in store I’ve never seen it. What am I doing wrong is my thought.

Hopefully the banding goes away after a few refresh cycles. I am going to say to try and not look for it. I ended up returning my first for another hoping to would have less banding. It ended up having a little bit more actually. That being said after use it diminished largely. Every once in a while I will notice it but it kind of is what it is. Don’t get too obsessed with this. Unless the banding is crazy bad I would just keep the same tv and enjoy it. You will not notice the banding 99.9999% of the time.

@@AmericanDragon76I did the panel refresh last night and boy, what a difference. I’m curious as to why LG just wouldn’t suggest that at first initial start up? I wouldn’t think doing a refresh right out the box is going to do much if any damage to the panel. It’s brand new, isn’t it? My brother in law has a 77” C1 and I’ve never seen anything on his for as long as he’s had it. Heck, it’s what made me fall in love with the C series. But anyway, after the refresh last night it’s a 180 degree difference. Much of what I expect when first unboxing and spending that amount of money on a premium tv. I guess my dollar to expectation ratio is… to high?🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for the video, Brian. Some games that really show it are Forza Horizon 5 and Sea of Thieves. Just looking at those skyboxes, I noticed the banding bad on my new 77” A80J. Forza is probably the worst because of the HDR and you are literally just panning the camera all the time as you’re driving. I got the A80J new for $2k at Costco, but I am wondering if I should return it. I’ve got about 100 hours on the panel hoping it will improve with time, but I’m thinking it is going to stay the same. I never saw this on my Samsung KS8000 that I still have. It is so distracting once you notice it, especially in Forza. I don’t see it in Halo Infinite or other FPS games, but games with those gray/blue skies and scenes you described, it’s there. It’s like two vertical bands to the left and right of screen, just off center, and I even notice a band going across horizontally about a third up from the bottom of the screen. It’s very noticeable on HDR gaming. Just dark lines in a perfect 90 degree U shape haha. Should I give it more time and try to get to 200 hours with A80J, or just exchange for C1/C2? Do you feel like it’s more prevalent on LG screens or Sony? Thanks, again.

Though I bought the G3 and had my first returned because I had really bad vertical banding, and unfortunately my second panel still has banding. The most prevalent one is in the middle of the screen, and I have been noticing it in content, even when I try to not search for it. I’m unsure if I should try another replacement or try a manual pixel refresh, I only have 30 hours on the panel though. I have also noticed pretty bad color banding on skies in game too, I don’t remember it being this prevalent on my C1.

Definitely has to do with the content and how the game is making its image. Maybe try that part of the game out on a new big lcd if you get a chance. But yeah it's not a big deal, overall PQ is too good to get upset over those little things.

Coming from fomo's video today. I just wanted to let you know the S95B is still the monster it was when it released the only picture preset they changed was Filmmaker mode. Which in my opinion needed to be changed so that it'll follow creators intent more accurately. For the millions that complained other than that literally nothing else was dimmed or worse. Just wanted to clear that up because I know you hate updates that change picture quality. But with this I think it was needed!

@@BRIANSTECHTHERAPY Thanks for the reply much appreciated. All is well I love the channel's new name. Tech with KG has an hour-long comparison few weeks ago with a stock S95B no update vs S95B with update. From his findings nothing was tamed but Filmmaker mode. Actually "highlights" looked brighter in most scenes than before. He did mention the movie and standard looked adjusted too so you're right nothing dimmer though. Very interesting if you haven't seen it. Looking forward to more of your comparisons!

@@NexGenTek thank you my friend! I tend to not watch many of the other creator's these days. The challenge with a new out of the box S95B or any panel for thar matter as they can be updated or changed at the factory and not necessarily show the update in the firmware. Thank you as always

Color banding is real
@itsjusterthought7941
@itsjusterthought7941 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian ...OK I see the banding in your example. It's awful. You claim it's content based. What does that mean. Are you saying LED does not have this banding when playing this exact game example, or are you saying other games with grey smoke in a dark environment don't have banding on OLED. You need to be more specific, because banding is a real problem game devs struggle with when deploying computer graphics. Banding is caused when you do not have enough gradations in your choice of colour tones and you see the steps. When a TV has equal gradation across the full spectrum you see little banding, but if you start stretching areas to emphasise other areas of contrast via tonal mapping, you pull gradation steps away from certain areas of the spectrum which results in banding. This can happen at the studio when lighting the game, so it's permanent for everyone (content based). Or it can happen at the TV via aggressive tonal mapping by the user or the manufacturer (hardware based). Which is it. You appear to be mixing the two.

What I mean is during certain content which is typically caught between a hazy grey or blue in hdr will show this. It does happen with Leds as well but it may be banding or jail bars which shows the zones . In SDR it is rarely visible. Some games have a faded almost washed out look which don't get dark enough ( Resident Evil 2 remake for example) which is where you'll see it most. It's on the panel but only shows up in certain content. Which means 90% of the time it's not visible but it's there and it's the panel. Thank you for watching
