It wasn't necessarily that Lex wanted to save the earth, he wanted to have the laser so they can destroy the earth as much as they want/over and over again without losing it completely. Also to dig at Ivy's style of evil

Oh I know Lex couldn’t give two shits about saving the Earth. I didn’t talk enough about that stuff, and it does sound like I really thought he wanted to in my review. My bad

I think the lex plan was more to mess with ivy because he hates how much attention she's getting. yeah this also happens to weaken superman but without the sun plants can't survive either making ivy powerless basically. But also superman shldve seen this coming cuz he was at the villian con in episode 4 where lex revealed the laser.
