What I find truly astounding is how this all adds up to however many bars of 4/4 (15 I think), rather than having 5/16 left over or whatever
@El_Molzo

That's a consequence of the chinese remainder theorem. No matter how complex the pattern, when repeated it will align with a 4/4 pulse eventually.

@@El_Molzo if the total phrase adds up to an odd number like 13/16, 17/16 etc then it will go out until you repeat 4 times, then it will align with a 4/4 pulse (e.g 13/16 x 4 = 13/4)
@El_Molzo
@El_Molzo 2 жыл бұрын
@@aprilcox871 Thats not, what I've meant with aligning with a 4/4 pulse. A phrase of 12 16th notes needs to be repeated 4 times to align with a 4/4 beat: 4 x 12/16 = 3 x 16/16 = 3 x 4/4. So after 4 repititions the phrase shares the 1 with the 4/4 pulse. A phrase of 13 16th notes needs to be repeated 16 times to align with a 4/4 beat: 16 x 13/16 = 13 x 16/16 = 13 x 4/4.

I’ve been a musician my whole life, and started rapping for fun when I was about 15 before actually realizing I could utilize rap in my music and taking it seriously in certain projects. I learned about Takadimi solfege in my late teens back when I struggled with the pentameter of my rhymes and especially trying to sound fluid and carrying stable breaths during fast triplets like twisted insane can, etc. I can honestly say from experience to learn this combined with practice regimens on my instrument and voice, was a huge boon. It helps me compartmentalize my lyrics especially during percussive passages. (Again, like rapping.) But not only that, it also improved my speed, accuracy, and comfortability during improvisation because I associate the “new rhythmic solfege” with what’s going on with my body and mind. Thus it acts as another barometer to measure myself with and gauge progress, except the whole focus is for keeping time. It is a perfect system, you’d be hard pressed to find any notation you can’t condense into the solfege easily, unless you’re like, looking up dodecaphonic music written In irrational time signatures to challenge yourself. Any musician should try this as a fun exercise; it’s very easy and so convenient you’ll be doing it in your head and with your voice for the rest of your life. Little cheat sheet for anyone who wants to rap or speak blistering fast triplets, “TAKADATAKADATAKADATAKADA-Thom.” :D

Haha I've followed Mattias for so long, first got introduced to him randomly like 15 years ago. Fun to find him guesting here too. Konnakol is such a fascinating tool for new music ideas. It's in a way so intuitive, it makes theory and rhythm merge immediately into making and feeling music. A welcome change to western music theory. The addition of percussion fits so greatly in this. Although this song is a real brain melter. I can imagine performing this and just one player loses one beat and the whole construction falls apart. It feels like you'll never get back to the groove if you snooze for even one hit.

Yogev, those tiny little clips from movies you put in between your explanations are hilarious. " I sense a trap" HAHAHA! My favourite one EVER was in your break-down of Gojiras - The Art of Dying, with Mr.Bean saying "Magic!" when they both resolved on the 45th beat. Too awesome bro. I'm very glad I found your channel because it's really helped me a LOT with understanding complex rhythms. That said, I'm really struggling with the (L/R) sticking at the beginning of The Art of Dying, in the percussive intro. I understand the 4/4/4/2/2/2 and then 4/4/4/2/2 but I can't seem to understand the actual (L/R) sticking. I've tried looking online for it but there's not much to be found and also most transcriptions start from the actual riff and not the intro beginning. Any help please, could you write the sticking onto your "beat-breakdown" circles, or do a short video more in-depth about how to think of this composition and how to count it?
@YogevGabay
@YogevGabay 2 жыл бұрын
hahahahahah the 'Magic' thing killed me As for the sticking, it's kinda straight forward. Think about straight up singles. RLRLRLRLRLRL. Now accent the matching numbers where each gap is also counted for so: RLRL r LRLR l RLRL r LR l RL r LR l ..... Makes sense? so the flow of singles remain, movement wise.
@AirwavesEnglish

WoW! Thanks for the reply. I feel honored to get a reply from a famous person! Thanks so much for clarifying this. I've seen a lot of drummers playing it as RLRL RLRL RLRL RL RL RL..... and it just didn't make sense to me because it's actually in 5 and not 4. I originally wrote out the sticking like what you wrote for me above and learned it as that so now I'm happy I understood it with the correct "feeling" without "cheating". I just wanted to make sure I'm playing/counting it as originally intended. Thanks a million; you're a star! Have a great weekend. :)

I just heard a song that I think you'd appreciate Yogev. A 2004 song by The Streets (British grime/rap band) called Blinded by the Lights. It has a half-time drum beat with a 16th note hi-hat ride and a persistent keyboard pulse on top. At first it sounds like may triplets or quintuplets over the bar, but listening again I think it's actually a 3/16th keyboard pulse which has a 1/16th note 'stutter' at the end to line up with after 4 bars (21 * 3/16ths + 1/16th = 64 1/16ths). Then near the end they drop out the keyboards in favor of a more straight-forward syncopated pulse on them, and emphasize 1/8th notes on the drums. The whole thing, especially that 1/16th note stutter, goes perfectly with the lyrics about going to a club and getting f'd up on drugs (not that I would know from personal experience, haha). Definitely simpler than some of the other stuff you've covered, but still a cool song and rhythmic arrangement!
@posmobin
@posmobin 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, that 3/16th keyboard part? I think it may also start a 1/16th note late as well, which means that the stutter actually drops it past the bar line every time. Or I could be completely wrong about all of this, haha. Check it out!

Hello Yogev, hello everyone. I've been trying to play Dreadful moments by Jinjer recently. On guitar 😄 I'm not sure there are polyrythmns involved, but the riffs are so clipped and ever changing. How would you approch a song like that? Do i have to write down the all thing step by step and memorize it ? P.S: All the love and force to Jinjer and their compatriots.
