Banggood DW EPP Eagle - Build and Maiden

G'day All, Well here is something a little different and really just a bit of fun. Over Christmas, I picked up an EPP Eagle on sale from Banggood. I ordered the Eagle along with their recommended motor and ESC, but I had a message from Banggood to tell me they are out of stock of the ESC, but I could select an alternative. So, being too keen to wait, I made a selection and the gear arrived a week or so after.
Here is the build and the failed maiden.
The suggested CG of 70mm in the instructions is completely wrong, way too far back.

The nose section has been reinforced now and it will fly again. Maybe tomorrow, probably the next day.

I had to add down thrust to the motor and move the battery forward to get mine flying correctly.

It was a big surprise that the CG was sooooo far out. My buddy in end of that footage has one too and we got his up no issues with the CG a lot further forward. I've got min back together now, but I may take some washers out to the field in case I need to adjust the thrust angel too. Cheers Michael

Michael you will need 2-3mm of reflex with a v tail at 90 deg this model is essentialy a flying wing good luck

I agree with EC White. I also added downtrust (3 washers) and moved battery (3S 1800 MaH) just behind the motor. Flies like a bird now

Cheers, I moved my battery to the front and it flew a lot nicer, until it nose dived into the ground. Perhaps not enough throw on the control to over come the small gusts. I'll need to repair and try again.

Mine had 2 issues, first moving the battery forward corrected the glide/power-off flight. However with just about any amount of throttle it climbed like it was tail heavy. Down thrust on the motor fixed that. BTW, last summer I was flying several hundred feet up, when a hawk attacked and actually hit it. That was really cool to see.

I tried again this morning, and while it flew out of the hand into the wind very stable and it appeared to be well balanced, as soon as I banked around it tipped straight at the ground and smashed the nose section in. Very frustrating. More hot glue required.

Michael, I have had several different types of this model....one thing to do is to ensure you put plenty of down elevator when you throttle up, this counteracts the tendency for the model to pitch up as speed is added....it will behave itself much better if you do this.....

I have added a good amount of down thrust angle in the motor now. But thank you for the advice, I'll definitely be sure to keep an eye on the elevator input too. Cheers Michael

Sorry, I can't fully translate your question. But, I think you are asking if I did get it to fly? Yes, I did get it to fly well. I had the control surfaces connected backwards. Flies very well now

I maidened mine yesterday. 40mm CG, thin ply all the way to mtr mount, 1400KV motor, right and down thrust, flew right out of my hand. I couldn't tell which way was fwd on the ply sides. I think the way with the servos more rearward would be best as a 2200 3s could be placed farther back, but the 1500 3s is fine at about 1" in front of the servos with esc up front and rx in back. I had to cut some small cooling holes on the bottom front and rear as well. Here is a link to my 2nd flite-I was surrounded by a bunch of hawks! Then when I was landing, as I cut power the tail feathers lost authority and it hit my legs. I was glad I had the ply in the nose! kzbin.info/www/bejne/amqyaoSAl9N6a8k

Great stuff Dennis, I finally got mine flying the other day, turns out I have the controls reversed (so stupid). That footage of yours is very cool! I did slope soar with a few seagulls, but it would have been far more thrilling to be circling with the hawks! Cheers

Thanks. The instructions were better than many chinese products but left a lot of important items out. I am doing the aileron mod today. Stay tuned.

RC planes John Reap - do you mean the CG? I think it is best at about 30-35mm. I have a1300mah battery in front of the servo mount. Cheers Michael
