Banned Book: Animal Farm by George Orwell CONTAINS SPOILERS

This is my response to reading Animal Farm for the third time, this time with booktube in mind. I feel that it's crucial to put the intentions of Orwell and the facts of the Russian Revolution together in the context of Animal Farm's meaning. Without that nuance you can misinterpret the book.

Great video and very informative. Animal Farm is an important read, I just read it again last year. Until your video I did not know so much about Orwell or the connection to Russian history. Thank you for sharing. I am about to read 1984 as part of the banned book challenge, already planned to read as now 40 years later and I am curious about connections.

I read Animal Farm in 8th grade (because it was short and they seemed to think it was fine) and I hated it. Then I reread it later and loved it so much, because I had the context to understand and appreciate it. It’s such a fantastic read.

My favourite story of the revolution, and as intro to the book? The early small movement was voted out in an election, so they dubbed themselves the "Bolsheviks" (the majority) and carried on in spite of having little to no popular support... Not all is as it seems...

Funny enough my favourite anecdote from the later period(Stalin) was the "cult of Personality" letter. They could not blame Stalinism for the failures, so they blamed Stalin himself, a few decades too late?

That is not true. The split happened down ideological lines, Lenin believed in restricting Party Membership to core dedicated professional revolutionaries and Martov wanted a broad membership with the inclusion of sympathizers and revolutionary workers. At the 2nd Congress Lenin’s faction won the majority of votes on the important issues, thus becoming known as the Bolsheviks, to Martov’s Mensheviks. The biggest blow to Lenin was losing the vote concerning party membership. The Congress was fairly evenly split between the two factions with members freely switching sides.

@@DuncanMcCurdie The group originated at the party’s second congress (1903) when Lenin’s followers, insisting that party membership be restricted to professional revolutionaries, won a temporary majority on the party’s central committee and on the editorial board of its newspaper Iskra. They assumed the name Bolsheviks and dubbed their opponents the Mensheviks (“Those of the Minority”). Britannica not wiki ;) It matters.

"They assumed the name Bolsheviks and dubbed their opponents the Mensheviks (“Those of the Minority”)." Truth is malleable it seems, even today.

@@alohm that is the same as I wrote. You originally said the Bolsheviks had little to no support which is wrong. The support between Lenin and Martov was fairly even.
