There aren’t any real “slums” in Tokyo anyway. My friend took me to what he considered the worst neighborhood in Tokyo and it was still great. They had a huge baseball field, they were on the edge of the city so they had more green space and recreational areas, the roads were very smooth and the apartments looked nice. This is a city where people feel safe enough to just leave their bikes outside and unlocked.

@@Anmirukaa Scams are usually in the busier areas, that said it was a "slum" because it was a working class area where Burakumin lived. The streets were still very clean, though there was some cracks where vegetation was showing. Where I live walking past homeless people living in tents on the street or using narcotics in broad daylight is fairly common, and my city is more expensive than Tokyo. Visiting Japan made me really admire the Japanese people as whole in terms of their values.

#1 seems reasonable because it's sort of considered rude to call someone a "gaijin" as opposed to a "gaikokujin". The former sometimes has a negative connotation associated with it so TV programs generally try to avoid the confusion.

"gaijin" by itself is not rude at all but it can be used as a slur and that's why TV avoids it to not even fall into the trap in the first place.

maybe it's because "gaijin" means outside person, so outsider, and "gaikokujin" means person from outside the country[another country]. So the first term doesn't have to only mean person from abroad, it could also mean other things, so it'd make sense to keep it clear.

Based on the Kanji, I would map gaijin as "Outsider" or "Alien" and gaikokujin as "Foreigner". We generally wouldn't call a "foreign national" an "alien" in polite conversation, but people do in some contexts, often when discussing negative aspects.

When Japanese people talk about special stores (vegetable store, butcher's, bakery etc.) it's customary to add -san to these words. By that you effectively refer to the owner/staff of the place and acknowledge that it is a business staffed by people rather than an abstract concept producing things.

Interesting how you might think, as I did, that 移民 (imin) would be a loanword from English, but actually it’s a kango, a Chinese loanword that presumably has no relation to English - a false friend, in other words. There is one kango that is related to English, the word for honey 蜜 (mitsu) with the original Chinese word coming from proto-Tocharian which is derived from proto-Indo-European, the constructed ancestor of a lot of languages in Europe and Asia, with that word being the cognate of the English “Mead”, an alcoholic beverage made with honey.

Not all kango are of Chinese origin. A Kango word only means that the word uses onyomi and is based on Chinese to some degree. In fact I would not be surprised if 移民 was coined in Japanese at first and loaned into Chinese later, along with many other common words (in both languages) like 法律、社会、経済、科学 etc. These words are called 和製漢語, aka kango made in Japan. Even many wago words were borrowed into Chinese as in 取り締まる、取り消す、場合、打ち消す、手続き, etc.

I think "half"-japanese is banned because it implies you aren't "fully" japanese, which may have an impact in term of rights and respect. "Mixed" don't deny that your are fully japanese in any subtle way but just indicate that you have foreign origin too.

@@kekeke8988 It does make sense. It's a long standing issue with children of mixed Japanese heritage living in Japan. (Many people I know have gone through this.) Half is a commonly used term in Japan, but it also sometimes has negative connotations. That's why some mixed people prefer the term to be changed from half, to things like mixed or "double".

@@kekeke8988 It isn't the same. Particularly from their perspective. As you said, the "half" implies that you are not fully Japanese. And to some people here, even though you are fully raised in Japan, you'll never be "Japanese" and therefore will never be treated as such. Why should that matter? Is a person who is fully "Japanese" by birth but has never stepped foot in Japan any more Japanese or deserving of better treatment than someone who has lived there all their life and has grown up in and contributed to the society? Yes, the word mixed may have a somewhat similar usage, but half (in some people's minds) brings the connotation that you are "less than" someone else. Mixed doesn't limit you. You can be one thing, but also be something else. And if you want to get into semantics, how many Japanese people are fully "Japanese"? So many people here have mixed Asian ancestry. And what about people who are 1/4 Japanese? Or 1/8? Should they be called quarter or eighth? Maybe live a mile in someone else's shoes before judging them for how they want to be viewed and treated.

I think for number 7, 八百屋さん　refers to the people who work at the store, not the store itself. Sometimes 屋 is used in ways that clearly refer to people, eg 大家さん or 殺し屋, and I think this is one of those cases.

The word 'gaijin' (gai = outside, jin=person) can be either translated as 'outer country person/foreigner' or 'outsider person/ostracized'. Based on context Though, 100% it must be the former when someone call you gaijin!

Number 7 makes sense because sometimes Japanese people give honorifics to non-human items. Like someone on Twitter said コッペさん(coupe-san). The thing is Japanese people believe in anthropomorphism where everything has a soul or spirit.

I kinda get number 6. Seen interviews with people who are half-Japanese living in Japan and I've heard it just feels weird to them to be classified as simply 'half' since it makes them feel like the other part of them doesn't matter or they're not a whole. I'm guessing 'mix' comes from mixed race, so maybe they like that term better.

It's kinda weird I saw this comment first then on another video uploaded 20 minutes behind this one saw a comment on from "TheJapanReporter's" latest video "I was Abducted by Japanese Mother and.." I don't get the negativity behind that. Japan is homogenous, so it only makes sense to call someone who is half-Japanese as... "half". It's no different than calling someone half-Indian, or half-Italian. Though I do understand, being part of "the group" in Japan is much more important if you've been born and raised in Japan, so there is definitely some unneeded friction there.

Well 外人 (gaijin) existed before being used as short for 外国人 (外人 and 外国人 were 2 different words) The historical meaning isn't foreigner but outsider (not in a good manner), the meaning foreigner is pretty "recent"

Out of all of these, Gaijin (外人) makes the most sense to ban as its a slur that can be read as Not Human or Outside human. It is also close to another slur in Gaiji ガイジ which means retard. The rest makes little to no sense

I think the reason why is because if you say half it’s like saying “you’re not a whole Japanese person”. Interestingly I’ve heard the phrase ダブル used instead as they are double the ethnicity compared to someone who is just one.

Wow, I guess Chibi Maruko-chan is an edgier show than I thought! One big one not in this video is "Yakuza." Media, particularly news media uses the term "Bouryokudan" or, "Violent Organization." I think the reason is supposed to be to try not to romanticize the Yakuza in any way.

I'm actually curious about how poor people survive in japan? When discourse relating to slums, begging, homelessness and poverty is banned that doesn't mean the problems have disappeared. It means they are being ignored by those who are in a position to help them, as well as hidden from people who might be willing to provide support.

the poor in japan live inside 24/7 net cafes where each cubicle is its own room. they can freely sleep on the reclining chairs inside or on the floor of the small cubicle rented out for many hours. the net cafes also have a room where they can be served food, sometimes there is free food and drinks in some establishments. they can also use the shower rooms in those places. the 24/7 net cafes are basically motels. they can also do their jobs or find jobs using the computer there. there are a few rare poor people in japan as well who sleep on the streets or underground train station walkways, but they quickly move away if there is police nearby. some live and hide under bridges. some live in their cars if they have one but lost a place to live

I knew about the first one, and I honestly find the reasoning behind it perfectly reasonable. After all, Gaijin is a more casual, slangy version of Gaikokujin, so it's easy enough to use as a veiled insult if one intends to do so, and plenty of people already do.

I think "half" Is banned to avoid misinformation. Because not every half Japanese is actually 50% Japanese, i could be only 25% Japanese (one of thier grandparents is japanese) or 75% japanese (one of thier grandparents is not japanese) ect. But it's still kinda unnecessary ban tho

When I thought about it in English, I understood the grocer a little better. The word "屋" is ”er”. in English. Drummer, carpenter, baker, etc. Maybe even in the US, it would be intimidating to call someone who is cleaning as you walk by, "Hey, sweeper." It's the same thing. Furthermore, one of the meanings of "八百" in "八百屋" means "myriad", so maybe 八百屋 can be misinterpreted to mean "jack‐of‐all‐trades." I don't know about the U.S., but some people in Japan have an image of jack-of-all-trades as stores that sell trash.

That makes no sense for a vegetable store, English does not have any equivalent to that except grocer, but is not specific to a place that sells only produce (vegetabler is not a word). The 2nd part applies more and is more word etymology.

I remember watching News Station when I was in Japan back in 86 or 87 and Kume Hiroshi san was talking to someone out on a live video feed an that person dropped an F bomb. Kume san immediately asked them to be more careful with their language as that particular word is 放送禁止 in America so it's probably best not to use it here either.

"Chibi" strikes me as meaning something like "Li'l" (as in Sailor Chibi Moon) which can be demeaning unless you're talking about characters or something even in English. Oddly enough, however, the accepted term for a person with dwarfism in English for a time was "Little Person". I still remember finding out what "busu" meant. I told a Japanese bartender she was cute and she said "Iya! Busu, busu!" I had a JapaneseEnglish dictionary on my phone with which I could look new words up. It seems that pretty girls are the same everywhere, they only see their flaws. Everybody seems to find their own culture's particular euphemism treadmill incomprehensible. I am still getting used to the new ones in America, like "birthing person". Guess that's the same everywhere too.

In English, you put "store" on it, but in Japanese, it doesn't have that, so it's not the name of the building. It is like "carpenter" in English. 屋 is the English equivalent of "er". Like drummer, baker, etc. By the way, "八百/yao" in "八百屋/yaoya" means "myriad."

Many of our news center's get paid by running an advertisement simultaneously with their story. More people rage click on controversial headlines, and so more advertisement money is paid. The consequence is it makes people addicted to rage clicking/channel surfing because it releases dopamine and glutamate in the brain. It instantly feels good to rage click, and hearing "you need to be more informed that things and people are bad" on repeat makes people feel like they made a good choice and should do it more. But daily outrage content on TV and online wastes a lot of someone's dopamine and glutamate people could use for other habits like learning a new skill, talking with friends, and caring about personal hygiene and eating routines. Japan's censorship around stigmatizing words on TV is probably keeping people a little less depressed.
