Me and my brother were best friends and were always there for each other. We actually had one of our best times going to a BANNERS concert. A few months ago I got expelled from my school and he totally turned around and became my worst enemy. We haven’t talked since. But sometimes I think of this song. How we would sing it together, hanging out in his car and all of our adventures. But it’s all gone now…I know that he’ll come around some day but it still hurts so this song is a comfort. I didn't want to be that person who writes things like "My loved one passed away and this song is my way of feeling them close" but TODAY I WILL BE. This is going to be a wee bit long, but stay with me. So I lost my grandmother almost 3 years ago. Everything happened so fast. One day I was having lunch with her and the next day at the same hour I was choosing her coffin. It was so so so hard for me to move on. I cried for weeks on end. And when I stopped crying I started to be so sad all the time that I lost myself and I was so angry at life and everyone. I study filmmaking in a state away from my hometown. She died during covid and during my freshman year of college. So she couldn't see all that I have accomplished in this time. Last year I wrote a short film and shot it in October. It was magical, because it's a story that means a lot to me as it's about me and my grandfather. I was looking for the perfect song for the final scene. Suddenly a song by my grandmother's favorite singer started playing. And I knew it was the perfect song, but I couldn't use it because of copyright. Then I remembered that the year she died she lent me several vinyl records. One of them was a record of one of her friends and the songs were similar to her favorite singer. I contacted him and was able to use those songs. During the filming I could feel my grandmother with me. I even cried during the lunch break, as they served the food she cooked for me on my birthdays. Also my birthday is in October and we filmed just 2 days before my birthday. Last week, my family came to the city where I live to see the short film for the first time. During the premiere I wished with all my heart that she was there. The only thing on my mind was her and that if she was here she would be the proudest person in the room. I thanked her for helping me find the perfect songs even from far away. And today this song played and I know she is my serenade. I know there are little things that let me know she's still here with me. I know that now it's up to me to keep going for her and for me. Because there are dreams that I told her and that I have yet to make come true.
