Yes, Rais Hamidou, real name Hamidou Ben Ali, was a Kabyle Algerian admiral and pirate from Boumerdes. The video is about Murat Reis/Mourad Rais the Younger (Al-Saghir) real name Jan Janszoon van Haarlem, who was a Dutch pirate and accepted Islam in Algiers after the Turks captured him. He took his pirate name from the name of Murat Reis/Mourad Rais the Elder (El-Kabir), an Ottoman privateer and admiral of Albanian origin.

One other bizarre thing is that the name is also spread In Lebanon and Palestine and some members of the family relocated in Cuba in the late 19th century, so they finally be in the Caribbean , one of their descendants are :John Henry Sununu[a] (born July 2, 1939) is an American politician who was the 75th governor of New Hampshire from 1983 to 1989 and later White House chief of staff under President George H. Your map at 0:36 is highighting the wrong area for Murat Reis' (Jan Janzoon Van Haarlem's) base. He was in Sali (or Salee), which is on the west coast on the map, due west of the word Morocco. You're video is a little confusing because you jump forward 100 years, and then back to the 3 people from the Baltimore raid who eventually returned.

I question whether privateering was a racket or not? My people, the Bogle's had a ship The Concert of Glasgow, taken by a French privateer. It was later taken from the French by the English Navy. All efforts to retrieve their ship from the Privy council were useless. If you look at the European power structure at that time England, France , and Spain were all three partners in the plundering of the Americas. So at least to me it raises the question of whether or not privateering was a cheep way of obtaining new ships for free?

When he was a privateer, Jan Janszoon flew the Dutch flag against Spanish ships and pretended to be Turkish by flying the Turkish flag when he att acked ships from other European countries, until he ended up being captured by the Turks !🤣 It's only AFTER THAT that he accepted Islam in Algiers and he soon became a kind of Muslim missionary, converting other Europeans while still being a pirate. Most pirate captains who atta cked European ships and shores and most of their crews were European reverts. For example, the former English pirate Jack Ward, the inspiration for Captain Jack Sparrow, accepted Islam along with all of his crew and settled in Tunis.

I love the Irish! Because they have a wonderful sense of history. and long memories to go along with it. To understand where you stand in this world and where things are headed, this is nessary. Blind acceptance of what ever happens and purposeful blindness is not their way. Standing up for what's good and right is what the Irish do as a nation whether or not it happens on a indviduial scale or not. Anyone who looks at the Irish sense of truth and fairness as a country can't help but be impressed.
