Imagine the indignity of being a member of a Gaelic aristocratic family like the Ua Neill and finding yourself post escape from a dark Dublin prison cold, hungry and soaking wet praying for rescue by fellow Gaelic chiefs deep in the Wicklow mountains. And coming from a pre- Norman Gaelic aristocracy that ruled over Ulster since 2AD and held the High Kingship of Ireland many times. Political and tribal divisions caused societal havoc across Europe in the medieval era, and Ireland was not untouched. Such turmoil also impacted the "olde Englishe", the Germanic tribes that ruled England from 4AD alongside their distant cousins the Vikings of Scandinavia. They too divided and took sides before and after the Franco Normans conquered and colonised England in 1066. Ironically, despite centuries of being colonised islands, it was the island of Ireland that emerged from the turbulent decades of 17th and 18th century Europe to more robustly retain its Gaelic heritage and ancient identity as a new nation formed to advance in to modern times. By contrast the island of the colonisers' identity regionalised, becoming diluted and ever changing to reflect the melting pot dynamic flowing from perilous empire building. Great and timely video. This is Gaelic history we need to hear much more about. Looking forward to your next topic.

At 3.54, the thatched cottage with two doors and no windows is the home of my great, great, grandfather Seamus McHugh in Gweedore. The windows were on the other side of the building as that side didn’t get the blast from the Atlantic. It was renovated by a local heritage committee but unfortunately they did a poor job and it has once again fallen into disrepair. My great grandfather Manus McHugh moved to another house nearby that was built in 1847, the original house was built around 1800 we think. Nice to see it in your video. 🇨🇦🇮🇪

What about the English protestant Crusades in Ireland and England when thousands of English Catholics were butchered and millions of Irish killed. On 1 event alone, 5 & half a million Irish starved to death by the English protestants and replaced. Oh yeah, the rich Irish blamed that on a potato, something like the cows being blamed on climate change for farting.
@thomasberry1772Ай бұрын
More bollox from the rich to push their sick agendas to devide and conquer. Religion created by the rich so the poor don't kill them. All evil in the world and academia bullshit comes from those who control the money and especially the media. The Crusades holiday agents for the rich. The plan by the rich is to destroy the white peoples of Western nations.

At this point in history Cambro-Norman would be a more accurate designation as it was Norman marcher lords and their Welsh vassals who spearheaded the invasion. Ironic that a FitzGerald was ultimately elected to govern an independent Ireland. Presumably Gerald of Wales would have been very happy with the enduring effects of the Cambro-Norman colonisation of Ireland as the only race that he held in lower esteem than the native Irish were the English!

To add to what I commented earlier, by the 12th century the provincial kings and local ruler's had established household troops (Lucht Tighe). Also, evidence in literature shows armour being adopted. These troops formed the backbone of any local force, and were undoubtedly the result of larger scale warfare. We also know, from the vision of Tungdale that were was a form of aristocratic heavy cavalry among the Gaelic Irish, but not quite the same Frankish type brought by the Norman's. In short, the Gaelic Irish of the period were not that much behind the rest of Europe when it came to military tactics or equipment. It was the tactical ingenuity of the Norman's, for example in baginbun where they drove cattle into the Hiberno-Norse shield wall. Or, in the siege of Dublin where they did a surprise strike against the High Kings camp that gave them the advantage. Also, the use of Welsh Longbows which were possible to replicate here due to the lack of suitable wood.

The claim Irish tactics didnt change with the Norman invasion is nonsense. Prior to the norman invasion, there were a sorta style of household troop that would fight in shield walls or other pitched battle styles. These, were made obsolete by the emergence of the Gallowglass who were much more effective against Anglo Irish. Also, by the late 16th century the traditional tactics had been totally replaced by pike and shot formations.
