Primal Ireland - Stories of History & Culture

Күн бұрын

Michael Dwyer fought in the 1798 rebellion and stayed on the run until 1803 when; after most of his family had been arrested, he surrendered to British forces sent to swamp the area he was hold-up in. Ultimately transported to Australia, he left behind some stories of both truth and legend of his escapade's, too numerous to tell in this short video!
#michaeldwyer #1798rebellion #irishrebel
Notes:
The Scottish highlanders were deployed by the British as it was thought they would have a familiarity with the landscape of Wicklow.
The term “Scotchmen” mentioned in the video was a colloquial term for “Scots or Scottish men” used at this time and indeed my own later Father often used this term too.
The 21st Infantry Battalion mentioned was demobilised due to Government cuts in 2005
Greetings from Ireland! Welcome to my channel, that is dedicated to the history and culture of Ireland. This is not set out to be a history lesson, but a ramble through some stories you might find interesting about Ireland from an Irishman! Ireland has so many connections throughout the world from the emigration from this country over so many centuries, but those with Irish blood in their families always have a yearning to know more about thier "old country", this is my attempt to bring some of the history and culture they left behind. So if you fancy some tales about horsemen and highwaymen, banshee's and fairies, soldiers and rebels, legends and folklore, saints and scholars, please like and subscribe, I post once per month. Thank you for watching. Ronan.

His brother Hugh was my 4th great grandfather. I visited the cottage mentioned above and the Green were so many were killed. They were cousins of Anne Devlin who was a very brave woman too.

@@raelenemortimer7256- yes. That’s when the picture of Michael Dwyer popped up as a relative, his younger brother Hugh is my ancestor. My dad told me that my grandmother Kathleen Dwyer had been invited and attended the reopening of the cottage where the shoot out took place. She was born in 1900.

I'm a Yorkshireman learning about my Irish roots. Been watching Davy Holdens videos and learning about the cause. It's horrible learning what happened to the good people of Ireland and disgusting they're called rebels. The rebels were the British government (as per usual), if only they'd learn to keep their meddling hands out of everything (like the yanks)

"Dwyer" should have headed to the heavily wooded Dundrum in South Tipperary, ancestral home of the Ua Dubhedír clan. He would have been among his own people, supported by tributary clans, and in greater fighting numbers. Dodging redcoats in the Wicklow mountains was never a sustainable winning solution for the often wet, sick and hungry "Dwyer" given the presence of numerous paid informers.

There were still a fantastic bunch of O'Dwyers in Dundrum, Cappamurragh - Knockavilla when I lived there in the 90s and I expect there always will be.

But he was among his own people. Wicklow was his home terrain and he managed to evade capture from one of the world's greatest ever superpowers for 5 years there. Wicklow was Ireland's last county to be suppressed (1606) and until the Military Road was finished 1805/06 its uplands were largely ungovernable by the British. Also, FYI (as most Munster folk like to erroneously believe) Wicklow was never in The Pale which ran from Dundalk to Dalkey.

a random question but I don't suppose Michael Dwyer is a relative to the Irish prisoner Graham Dwyer? both being from Dunlaven and named Dwyer there's a fair chance he's a nephew or even grand child of Michael Dwyer
