Michael Dwyer fought in the 1798 rebellion and stayed on the run until 1803 when; after most of his family had been arrested, he surrendered to British forces sent to swamp the area he was hold-up in. Ultimately transported to Australia, he left behind some stories of both truth and legend of his escapade's, too numerous to tell in this short video!

Notes:
The Scottish highlanders were deployed by the British as it was thought they would have a familiarity with the landscape of Wicklow.
The term “Scotchmen” mentioned in the video was a colloquial term for “Scots or Scottish men” used at this time and indeed my own later Father often used this term too.
The 21st Infantry Battalion mentioned was demobilised due to Government cuts in 2005
Greetings from Ireland! Welcome to my channel, that is dedicated to the history and culture of Ireland. This is not set out to be a history lesson, but a ramble through some stories you might find interesting about Ireland from an Irishman! Ireland has so many connections throughout the world from the emigration from this country over so many centuries, but those with Irish blood in their families always have a yearning to know more about thier "old country", this is my attempt to bring some of the history and culture they left behind. So if you fancy some tales about horsemen and highwaymen, banshee's and fairies, soldiers and rebels, legends and folklore, saints and scholars, please like and subscribe, I post once per month. Thank you for watching. Ronan.
