I own the B&R 2.0. The knurl is worth many times what the bar actually costs. When I lift outside of my gym, that bar comes with me. Benefits of taking Rip's advice plus owning a truck.

This has helped me decide 2 go ahead with a bushing bar, and one that's reasonable on price. I will likely try to get 4 or 5 bars over the next few years as money allows. What bar is strong but has good whip? 190,000 psi steel vs 220,000 vs 150,000.

Well, this knowledge is enough reason for me to terminate my membership at my current gym. By lack of a better option, I selected this current gym, but my training sessions there are very uneven and it's because of their bars. Yesterday, I had a very crappy 'training' session, because I was gnashing my teeth at the utter crap they call barbells. They're all bent like crazy, they're all different in thickness, they have horrible knurling, and what I started to pay some real attention to is the distance between the knurling. I switched between three bars yesterday and it went from bad to worse. I tried to press, and then these details are very important for my grip width. I found out that the distance between the knurling is all different. I had made the assumption they were the same, as manufacturers can't be so stupid to just do whatever, but apparently they do. I also asked two times whether the weight of the bars is 20 kg, because while they look like it sort of, they're all nameless brands and a few are much thicker than others. Gym owner and one trainer said yes, but whether that's a fact I don't know. I'm used to the bars they have in a gym that's now out of reach due to my moving away to another town. Those bars were real quality, which is rare to find. Among others, they have a Texas Power Bar, a straight one too. Anyway, in the 'new' gym I tried to deadlift a few days ago. Found a bar with the least shoddy knurling and the knurling distance is so messed up, I had to mess around finding the grip width I've been using for years. One rep was me almost spinning to one side, because I had messed up the grip width. Fortunately, it was a light weight. Some bars are even totally worthless, as their sleeves are sort of 'decorated' with some sort of weird corrugated design that doesn't hold plates and certainly not the horrendous metal clips they have. What is even the purpose of those bars? Next time I go there, I terminate my membership. I have my own barbell, in storage, and I can't use it where I live now. Home gym is no possibility. Only reason I selected this gym is because others are worse. They are more typical fitness centers where there's no adjustable racks even and deadlifting will probably not be allowed, because they don't have a platform and I've been told before in a 'gym' that they don't condone deadlifting because it upsets members. It would be a blessing to live near WFAC or just any gym with good equipment and people who appreciate the finer aspects of lifting. End rant.

@captainh3831

The center knurling is there to help keep the bar from sliding down the back while squatting by catching the lifter's shirt. If the knurling is bothering you, wearing a shirt of decent thickness like a sweatshirt will help alleviate that.

I want to build a home gym and im searching for a good powerlifting bar but all over the internet novadays i see mentioning that the sleevs rotate on bars. I dont need to do olympic exercises, i want to bench press, shoulder press, squat, dead lift, row and to do landmine exercises with my bar but i dont need anything to spin and rotate over my head! I bought a new bar it was a rogue quality bar and have been using since the 90s

When do you recommend and not reccomend having center knurl on a bar?
@rossMIE
@rossMIE 5 жыл бұрын
Center knurl is for powerlifting, bench, squat, deadlift, no knurl is for Olly (Olympic) lifts. No center knruls allows you to rack the bar on your clavicle with less damage to the skin, as per Olly lift's. That's the difference 👍. Both types of bar can have center knurls even Olly bars, but if there is no center knurls its probably an Olly bar, not a power bar. Also I'd add that some deadlift bars are diffrent, as they have no center knurl, some even have knurls in different places to accommodate sumo or traditional deallift styles The other point to consider is the type of kurnling. Power bars will be slot more aggressive. The enter knurl if an Olly bar has one is likely to be very gentle. Basically if you are not doing lots of cleaning movement, get a basic power bar. 👍
@swany65
@swany65 4 жыл бұрын
@@rossMIE IWF specs men's Olympic bar needs a 12cm center knurl. IWF women's bar specs have no center knurl. Your point about center knurl is still valid though. I favor center knurl doing cleans but I think the knurl on my bars aren't that aggressive. If I lift with no knurl and form isn't perfect the bar tends to slide down, especially heavy lifts.

There's many versions of Olympic type bar.... placement of the knurling.... tells you that it's a bench press bar or a squat bar... typically the bars sleeves have bushing.... you also have a lady Olympic type bar... are shorter weighs less smaller diameter bar shallower knurling... regulation bars are calibrated for the right amount of whip with ball bearings sleeves... they're not for the general population they keep them locked up!
