The one movie my circle of friends and me were 100% determined to see in cinema ever since its trailer was Oppenheimer which we predicted to be the best movie of the year. Age wise we re all in the 30-40 bracket and basically grew up with Indy and Mission Impossible so these were the ones we also intended to see...and now they all released at about the same time..This is just plain stupid coz esp Indy and Mission Impossible are likely to attract that very demographics which is us. It s basically impossible to see all 3 in theatres given our lifestyle/ time management within just a couple of weeks. They clearly should have spread out the release dates of these big ones.
@DKGifford19608 Жыл бұрын
I think Sound of Freedom also ate up some of that demographic. Conservatives typically are men also about our age (regrettably) and older. The type that would go see these types of films.

@@DKGifford19608 You re right, this is yet another rival esp in the US. Over here in Europe it s basically not talked about much tbh. I only learned about its existence watching Dan and other cinema channels. In my book, Indy could have been a very good winter holiday movie coz this is the time where many get that nostalgic mood and I m sure that could esp help a long running franchise like Indy. With Mission Impossible being very nice for the rainy days in autumn...could have applied to Oppenheimer as well - core message being: don t release both at the same time, you re just hurting yourself doing that. Totally botched up release dates is a theme of the past couple of years, it s either all movies interesting for our kind at once or there s nothing we d deem worthy going for a movie night (which for us mostly means: time management first and then hopefully a nice night with dinner, movie, followed by drinks) and the verdict is: we simply go see less in theatres. They re hurting themselves and the cinema infrastructure and we as the potential customers end up going like: "yeah nice, you just made your potential ticket sale impossible and then you go complain why ppl perceive fun nights out as an organizational hazard or switch to movie streaming".
@MrBrock314 Жыл бұрын
@@DKGifford19608 The Sound of Freedom isn't a Conservative movie. It's a movie about stopping sex trafficking which is pretty universal. I would consider myself centre-left politically here in Canada (which would be somewhere close to Bernie Sanders by US standards) and it was definitely up my alley. Despite its release by a religiously-affiliated studio, it's not a religious movie other than a single line in the movie "God's children aren't for sale." which is one of the least religious things you could probably say. Leaving god out of it "Children aren't for sale" would make it equally true to 99.9% of atheists and unbelievers.

Dan, the real/actualreason that Tom Cruise was talking about “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” was not to ‘hype the theatrical experience’. It was to keep “Mission: Impossible” in the headlines the only way that he could. To do that, he had to answer Barbenheimer questions bc Barbenheimer was the only thing that media people wanted to talk about. When Tom answered a Barbenheimer question, he knew it would generate a headline & that “Mission: Impossible” would get mentioned if for no other reason than that Tom was being quoted about something. Whether Tom’s strategy worked or not is arguable. However, it definitely wasn’t about Barbenheimer. It was about keeping his name in the headlines so that, by extension, “Missiom” would get mentioned in the Barbenheimer stories. 💯

It was a solid entry in the M:I franchise, but nowhere near the best. As someone who’s been watching this series since its inception back in the 90s, Dead Reckoning did very little that was new or creatively inventive. No matter how well done, I’ve seen most of this stuff before, even in other 2023 movies. Also, the framing device in the beginning was one of the dumbest, most baffling narrative decisions, especially in an M:I film. The audience should never know the answer way before all the main characters as we watch them cluelessly bumble about for 2+ hours searching for the MacGuffin keys.

It barely feels like a movie since the characters barely act themselves or deliver character-moments, instead just saying plot. It feels so strange considering how efficient Fallout was, by interspersing action with really good drama, really good character, and leaving the plot to be shown rather than talked about. Hey Dan, I’d like to make a suggestion I believe would be really fun for the show. Maybe in the international box office segment, every week you could tap in a different international market so we could see how different cultures react to different movies. It can be a bit overwhelming just to get China perspective every week on international box office (not to downplay its significance to the numbers of course, but it would be nice to have new perspectives). I really liked this segment you did on Japan for example, even if it was to talk about the controversies. As Brazilian I sure would love to see my market represented in the statics every once in a while. Did you know for example that Barbie just set the biggest opening weekend of all time in here? If anything else it’s just fun trivia 😊

It isn't just the Chinese perspective. China just has a large box office. That might be why it might seem like it is a "China perspective". There have been times were something wasn't released in China, but it was still so popular elsewhere and landed on the chart. It is an international chart.
@joelciclone1 Жыл бұрын
@@xellosspoo I know China numbers are huge, that’s precisely my point. Even though the international charts includes every market they are often overshadowed by the Chinese one. Tom Cruise rooting for barbenheimer felt more like damage control, he knew these movies were about to obliterate MI and tried joining them to boost his film. And for a second it was working, but the moment the films were released, it was (no pun intended) impossible to beat them.

Paul Reubens was a comedic genius...from the suggestive off Broadway Pee Wee to the G rated genius of his Saturday Morning program, to the brilliance of his big screen Pee Wee...he not only showed the creative brilliance, but flexibility to bring his creation to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Bravo, Paul!!! You were an original genius who transcended targeted audiences and decades of changing styles to become a comedic icon.

MI opened in the range of previous MI films before being dragged under that Barbenheimer tidal wave, but do you think that part 1 also hurt? Is a portion of the MI audience not that interested in watching half a story and having to wait for the rest? Are they waiting for part 2 to drop with the expectation of catching up with part 1 on streaming then?

Dan, I know this is a real big ask, but I'd really like you to put a breakdown of Tom Cruise films domestic/international split vs the average. He seems to really not be popular in the USA. I thought after Top Gun last year this might change. I saw Mission Impossible too, it's fun, very silly, but fun.

That was a great example of how people can create their own narrative, and then convince themselves that said narrative was real without any evidence to back it up. In this case they'd convinced themselves that WB intentionally misled people with its marketing and that people didn't know that it was going to have so much in the way of political messaging, and as a result the second weekend would collapse once word spread about it. But the marketing wasn't misleading, and obviously people aren't turned off by its political message like those people were hoping.

Love this show! I think it would interesting (if you have access to the numbers) to add how many individual tickets were sold for each film over the weekend. Would give more of a 3D view for the flashback box office weekend to compare to now

For what it’s worth, The First Slam Dunk is still playing here in Japan… it might have gone on hiatus for a bit, I’m not sure, but it’s playing at about one showing a day at my local theater in Shimonoseki, which isn’t a big movie-going place.

I'm kinda sad Mission Impossible is suffering, because I really enjoyed the movie and think it deserves its own spotlight. But hot damn they should have seen this coming. Barbenheimer didn't fall out of the sky on 21/7, it had been building steadily for months. They had time to push the release. But I'm guessing some egos got in the way, and now they reap the consequences

Barbie is the phenomenon. Oppenheimer came on to ride an anti-pink wave and somewhat succeeded but is not a phenomenon. Most people wouldn’t think of sitting through such a historical and a dense movie at a theatre but dudes wanted to show up “the girls and gays”.

@@jakestroll6518 What are you talking about? Oppenheimer is a Christopher Nolan movie and was always likely to succeed at the box office. @MrBrock314 Жыл бұрын
@@Attmay I care nothing for the gimmick and saw Oppenheimer - it's one of Christopher Nolan's best movies although fairly different from his other big successes (The Dark Knight and Inception). I can't speak to Barbie as I didn't see it. From the reviews, it didn't seem like it would be up my alley as Dan Murrell was mixed on it (although he gave it "it's fine" overall) and two other reviewers that I watch relatively often and seem to have similar outcomes to mine both said it "wasn't for them". The only very positive reviews I've seen for Barbie were from viewer comments or reviewers I don't watch/trust. I'll probably see it at some point as I watch pretty much everything but horror eventually. Like when it comes out on Netflix (or Crave - the Canadian version of Max).

Dang, that was a packed show. Loved all that coverage. Still think you should shorten the coverage on the rotten tomatoes decoded section. Don’t think you have to talk about every movie in that list every week. Maybe just highlight the new ones and compare it to notable films that have come out already. Additionally, and I understand there’s been a lot more important things to cover, but I was a little sad we didn’t do the ironic countdown to The Meg 2 like you did back in the day. That countdown really made that experience something else and I loved you for that.

I went to see Barbie again on a Sunday afternoon - after seeing it Saturday night with my girlfriends - and I had never seen the theater parking lot so full. I had to park in a shopping center and rush to make my movie! Luckily this theater shows 20 minutes of previews lol so i was able to get popcorn and get to my seat in time. But i have never ever had trouble finding parking at this theater before. The power of Barbenheimer!

Hey Dan, long time watcher of Charts since SJ. I had a comment/suggestion. For infographics like the one at 24:36, displaying them as a wall of text is not as readable at a glance compared to your other infographics. Pausing the video, I can make out what goes where and how things add up, but in real-time, it's harder to grok. If you had each of those line items in a positive-negative horizontal bar chart, with the tallies in a separate chart or as their own line items, I think it'd be easier for a viewer to follow the relationships and magnitudes of these numbers.
