It's sad Blue Beetle didn't do so well. I actually really enjoyed it, not like it was the greatest thing ever but I had a lot of fun with it. It's unfortunate how DC and WB has handled this entire reboot process
@incredibilistic

I think the issue is that DC doesn't have the luxury of releasing a fun, family-friendly film because there's nothing else of substance in the DCEU/DCU. Because Marvel had Iron Man, Cap, Thor and the Avengers they had the autonomy to make movies like Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy that were fun, light-hearted distractions from the broader universe that were also still important and connected to the larger MCU narrative. In another reality where BvS, Suicide Squad, WW84 and Justice League were all billion dollar blockbusters, something like Blue Beetle would've been their chance to stretch their creative legs but since the entire experiment of the DCEU has resulted in the arguably the largest financial and critical failure in WB's history this movie just serves as a reminder of how much of a dumpster fire the DCEU is.

She's carrying them and making up for their other bombs. WB can't even really enjoy this victory because it's simply making up for the losses they took on those other films rather than profiting. Greta has more to brag about by comparison, thankfully.

i had a blast with blue beetle. the plot and villain are pretty generic, and the emotional beats didn't always hit with me, but the humor worked well and the action scene (especially the third act) are some of the most entertaining i've seen in years, and definitely at the top of the dceu. the suit and cgi looked so good. I would really hate to see him kicked out of the gunn universe just because it flopped at a time where every DC movie is flopping. I would love to get a second one with a creative vision from gunn, helping guide the writer to a more impactful and creative story.

@@MrInvinciblewarrior i guess we have different opinions then lol. while i would compare this movie to iron man (which i think is better), i wouldn’t call the action scenes carbon copies. other than the blasters, the directing/camera work of the actual scenes, mixed with the different weapons and choreography in no way reminded me of iron man. i respect your opinion if you didn’t like them, but to me they were a blast (fuck that’s probably a pun). while i love iron man, and find the story and characters a lot more interesting and think it is overall a better movie, i think i had a better time with the action in blue beetle. at least in most aspects of it.

For your Barbie vs. Other 2020s Top Grossers (Domestic) chart, I would recommend either: 1. That sounds especially difficult to do because it's tough to choose which score/rating to compare the box office with. The critic tomato meter, the average critic rating or the audience score, or maybe the cinemascore? As Dan stated in the video, a good score in one category doesn't necessarily mean a good score in another. @@rykeman916 I agree with you, especially during summer it's interesting to check movies' box office from Monday to Thursday, because it's s not so negligible: in the US Barbie made more than 19m last week from Monday to Thursday and just a little bit more than 21m in the last weekend, so nearly the same. I guess we normally check only weekends box office because during the rest of the year fewer people go to movies during the week, but also because it's simpler to analyse only data from the weekends, especially overseas, where you usually cannot find weekdays' grosses (only weekends' grosses and cumulative grosses)

@@rykeman916 -- I can only speculate but my guess is no one's interesting in a mid-week total that doesn't account for the weekend. I'm not really sure why that matters anyway since, as you said, movies released during the summer are likely to perform better because kids are out of school, which means mid-week totals don't really matter for the other 9 months of the year. Doesn't seem worth the effort to track how a movie performed on a Tuesday versus the weekend.

It hit me the other day that Disney's poor box office performance this year, it made me realize Disney has historically seems to be on a palladium shift from going from making lots of money and being a cultural force, to losing money and being relic of the past. The 30s, 50s, late-80s early 90s, and the 2010s represent the former, and the 40s,60s-mid 80s, 2000s being the latter. So these box losts could just be a historic trend.

Yeah, it is always the same story. They make something that is legit great and then after a while they start diluting the output, making sequels, prequels or reboots that is no where near the quality of the originals.

I really wish they would've pushed back the release of Blue Beetle until after the end of the strike so that the actors could promote it. There also are audience members who don't fully understand that they can see films that were finished before the strike. It was such a poor decision from the studios and a truly fun enjoyable movie with a perfect cast was hurt by that decision.

Hey Dan, have you ever done (if not, would you consider doing) a breakdown of movie budgets, specifically for the $100M+ budgeted movies? I'd would love to learn about where the costs come from and the amount of money being spent on different categories like, actors, directors, producers, music licensing, music recording, sound effects special effects, visual effects, props, sets, catering, hotel/travel, etc. How do these numbers compare to an animated film? It would be fun to know which part has exploded the cost of making movies recently, and if one were to scale down budgets, what would need to be cut. I don't know how tough it is to get information like this, but it would certainly be fascinating data.

Hi Dan! Thanks for all the hard work, we love your show! Maybe put an asterisk on the 2023 top grossers with a tiny blurb explaining spider-man? I think the dissonance comes from looking at a chart that doesn't include the adjustment to chart's claim in the print.

I went to see Blue Beetle this weekend. It was fun, though the pacing was a bit uneven. The rest of my family, however, who are much bigger DC fans than I am, loved it. But I did really enjoy Ths Flash earlier this year. DC isn't making bad movies (anymore), but no one is seeing them.

Cope. The budget needs to match the projected revenue. Dumping $100 million on creating the movie then spending additional money on advertising is studio suicide when it’s only bringing in $25 million especially in the context of the Flash.

Love it as always, Dan. As if you don’t have enough data to comb through… but I wonder for A Week in Movie History if you not only showed the adjusted box office… but maybe on occasion put that against the adjusted estimated budget. It puts into stark relief how bloated film production costs have gotten

Suggestion for the top 2020s graph; could you not put SM:NWH on the chart but leave it at the same size (still having the top be $600k)? So the line for that film would shoot off the page but that would help to make the point of how well it did and save you repeating yourself. Or maybe that would just make the chart look weird :)

Question: How much discretion do theater owners have in pulling movies from their screens? I ask b/c I wonder how much of a movie's drop has to do w/ a lack of public interest vs. theater owners' obligations to another film. For ex., Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning took a huge drop from its week 1 to week 2, the latter obviously was when Barbenheimer was unleased... But Dan also pointed out in that week's Charts video that MI:DR also lost over a thousand theaters. The question is whether MI:DR's week 2 drop was b/c public lost interest in the film b/c of being overshadowed by Barbenheimer, or whether MI:DR lost screens b/c of theater owners' contractual obligations to Barbenheimer & thereby was unavailable for theater-goers in wk 2, which contributed to loss of public interest; sort of the chicken or the egg-type question...
@DanMurrellMovies
@DanMurrellMovies Жыл бұрын
Every contract is different - but generally theaters are committed to keep a movie for at least two weeks. Mission: Impossible lost over 1,000 theaters in week 3, not week 2. Its theater count stayed steady the week that Barbie and Oppenheimer premiered.

Love the charts Dan! The insights you provide into the film industry are so interesting-particularly Rotten tomatoes decoded. I noticed this back with The Muppets-a perfectly enjoyable movie that earned a 95% on RT! It’s the Muppets, who’s gonna come out negative against Kermit and Gonzo? But the average rating gave a more accurate picture. It was good. Better than Jurassic Park (91% on RT)? Not in my opinion.

Just another reason to settle these SAG-AFTRA and Writers Strikes - there is ZERO promotion for these movies outside of social media word-of-mouth, and there's no doubt in my mind a lot of movies are getting hurt by not seeing, say, a Xolo Maridueña out on the junket. Could you imagine the buzz Strays would've gotten had Jamie Foxx been out there promoting that movie?
