I'm sitting here in my office. The door is closed. I have my head buried in my computer. People walking by who might glance in through the little sidelight window next to the door might be thinking...wow, he really studying something in there...better leave him alone. That's right, leave me alone. Because since I got in here 2 hours ago, my head has been buried into Tom Petty KZbin videos. I'm gonna do this all day in honor of you, Tom. I had forgotten how many great songs you had. And with every one of them, there is no mistaking who it is. You had a sound all your own. Your voice, your guitar tone was instantly recognizable. You were a legend. I wasn't a huge fan like some fans are. I never saw you live. But I never changed the channel either when one of your tunes came on. I own a couple of your albums and they saw some decent turntable time while I was in college and they still do. I was a sophomore in college when "Damn the Torpedoes" was released. It got beer spilled all over it during a few parties but it cleaned up pretty well and I still have it today. I liked "Louisiana Rain" off that album a lot. Never got any radio play and maybe that's why I liked it even more. That one and ":Even the Losers" were my faves from that record. I don't know why I'm writing my life story here. Nobody gives a shit about any of this except me. But you were a part of my youth and you provided background music to a part of my life that I remember fondly. Thanks for all that you did. You always seemed like a cool guy. One of the good guys. A guy who fought his record company when they wanted to raise prices on your albums and you still wanted guys like me to be able to afford them. Just a laid back but stand-up guy who just wanted things to be right. I respect that a lot. You'll be missed. R.I.P.

What you've written is important for everyone who cares about the value that music has in our life. I mean real music, true music, like Tom's music. I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1977 at Winterland in San Francisco, in 1981 in Vancouver, B.C., then in Indianapolis with my wife and three older kids in 2006, in San Antonio in 2008 with my son in a driving rain, in Houston in 2014 with my two middle daughters and then the last time in 2017 with my next to youngest daughter who was attending UT in Austin. I also sent my daughter who was living in London to see Tom again with her husband in 2017. My only regret is that I didn't get a chance to take my youngest to see him or my wife more than once. His were by far the most enjoyable shows I have ever been to, and I have seen many of the greats. His rapport with the audience was special, his music great and he really did look to be enjoying himself each time. RIP to one of the true greats.

I did when they were YOUNG, & they STILL love it, & now my grandchildren know & enjoy a lot of it too!! They like it for the same reasons WE do - it's TRUE, HONEST, REAL MUSIC. It's FUN Music. He put his soul (& often his sense of humor) into his music, so in that way, he WILL be with us FOREVER!! I know no one here will EVER stop enjoying his music. Peace!!

Confess that I have paid little attention to Tom Petty over the years - another hit song band among so many from the late 70s but watching, listening to this, I get a LOT. Great guitar playing great musicians all around with a lovely intentional and heartful presence. So glad this concert is online for us. It's almost tragic how many good bands came forward in my days. Couldn't take them all in. But this one is so clearly on in the direct sincere way I love. Showmen like the Stones, Bowie etc, etc are great but this is the stuff that warms our hearts and spirits deep down.

We met the German family who befriended him at 20, drove Mom's brand new red Jag at top speed on the autobahn to see what it could do, drank at a huge beer garten with men dancing in lederhosen. Bavaria was memorably green. At the Wall with my new Brownie a young solder pointed his rifle at the then ignorant American kid of 16.

Something about this live version really gets me. I think the instrumentation is better on the record, but it’s hard to say which version is ultimately better. In this live performance I especially love the falling of the vocals after the “free fallin” line. I like it better than the falling voice on the record. Either way, it is so genius and it paints such a beautiful image. God what a legend.
@jeframp38053 жыл бұрын
I sense there is a lot of effects on that "free falling line" I am not even sure it is live. Sounds nothing like the rest of his vocals in the song.
@patriciofernandez27112 жыл бұрын
@@jeframp3805 He's using a backing track for the chorus. They've taken the original studio take and added some delay over it, and then Tom sings on top of that. Probably because by this point he couldn't hit that high A anymore.
@jeframp38052 жыл бұрын
@@patriciofernandez2711 deffo . It is exactly like the original vocal but lots of echo. every time he performs it it sounds the same too. I think even live in the 80s that part was playbacked.
