A word of advice from someone who lives in PCB, Florida. Prepare for the weather. It can be 70 degrees or 40 degrees at the start. It was literally freezing a couple of years ago. Plan for both. Also, don’t forget to train for transition. You will be running after the swim through the beach to your bike. You will be disoriented. Plan for a way to clean your feet, you don’t want to be riding all that way with sand chafing your feet. Swim with others, have them be right next to you. Take your goggles off in the middle of the lake and put them back on, chances are you’re going to get kicked, elbowed, swam over... all of the above. Be prepared for a 55 year old guy to blast by on the bike. In that moment, will you try to keep pace and blow out, or will you continue running your own race? Chances are a little bit of both. Do some hill climbs, we have a bridge at the beginning and at the end of the ride. Many a rider have walked up that bridge. You’re going to love the run, the fans are amazing. Keep it up! Good luck brother 👍

C C, thank you for sharing. What would you recommend for removing the sand? Water bottle in transition to clean off the feet? Correct me if I am wrong, but Nick will need to be swimming with a cap on. He should get use to swimming with it on, his head will get warmer and some people find it causes slight headaches because of the tightness.
@ArabellaWright5 жыл бұрын
Second that about the sand and stones, learnt that lesson the hard way, I keep a small flannel towel in the transition area, quick wipe of the feet and into SOCKS! (still not sure how people go sockless for the longer races). Tip for the goggles - put them UNDER your swim cap rather than over or you'll sometimes see people wearing two caps, goggles over one and under the race cap. Just helps not to lose them from a stray kick. Good luck and get a fan for those turbo sessions!

I’m worried about how you are going to pace the IRONMAN. I’ve always either used HR or power (watts) and going by feel can be pretty dangerous. Practice transitions right after swimming for an hour+ because you feel very disoriented. Try to train using the nutrition products that will be available on course. Think Gatorade endurance, GU products, pretzels, pickles, etc. (You can find this on the Ironman website. Start taking nutrition while you’re riding. It takes some getting used to eating, drinking and stuff at 20+ mph. Just some stuff that I’ve done that has helped.

This is the breakdown on the differences between Nick and Preston. Preston is naturally more tallented than Nick, but if he isnt naturally good at something he wont even attempt it. But with Nick i think he is average at everything but he has iron determination and he'll just plug away at something until he becomes great at something. Just goes to show what a strong work ethic gives you

I would work a lot on your back flexibility and the bike position. I guess that you might have a lot of power, hopefully endurance as well. But that doesn't help you, if you can't get in a proper aero position. Your current position looks more like a comfortable road bike position in terms of ankles, head position and over reaching. :)

Some people don’t sweat as much as others. Doesn’t mean you’re not training hard enough. If you feel like sweating more wear long sleeves/ sweatshirt and sweatpants at the start of your workout. You will definitely sweat more and once you get hot enough take off the layers and wear normal athletic clothes. You will likely keep sweating just as hard for a good period of time as long as your workout stays same intensity.

I'd highly recommend some fans for your indoor training. They make a huge difference in comfort. I usually have at least two or three when I do any indoor training. Especially being in the hot climate. I live in Florida so the heat and humidity are crazy. I'd also recommend a trainer tire. That way you're not wearing out your rear road tire on the trainer. This can definitely risk a blowout. Nice job on all the prep!
