Welcome to the Salvage Rebuilds uk channel. In this video we reassemble the Mini Cooper S and find out if we have cured the fault.
Working at our fully equipped workshop in Kent we carry out tasks including Panel beating, Body work, Mig Welding, Sheet metal Spot Welding, Fabrication, Chassis Repairs, Sand Blasting, Engine and Mechanical repairs, Reconditioning, Restoration and Structural repairs on the Celette Jig Dozer frame machine.
We do hope you enjoy this video and Check out our other videos Repairing all kinds of Cars Vans Motorcycles and vehicles including Barn finds, Quick flips, First wash, Repairs, Salvage, Restorations, Will it run, Accident damaged, Cat S, Cat N, Cat X Copart Auction bargains, Non Runner and anything else that arrives at the #Salvagerebuildsuk workshop. #RobandChris
We do receive quite a few questions regarding tools and equipment that we use for various jobs. Unfortunately there is too many to list but some of the brands we use include Snap-on, Blue-point, Makita, Sealey, Clark, Esab and Sykes-Pickavant.
If you are interested in a specific tool, please put your question in the comments section of the relevant video.

Better than Wheeler Dealers!! When Ed China was doing that programme at the beginning they used to show more such jobs, but then it descended into a US-style wham bam thankyou mam programme. This is what people want to see - something that is educational and helpful when doing your own jobs. Lapping valves etc isn't for everyone, but there are a lot of people for which this is very helpful. A great video - honestly.

I watch Wheeler Dealers, but it's a bit fake, The buyers and sellers are just stand ins. and the way they rag the car round a track at the end is a bit naff. I think I would rather have a Salvage Rebuilds car than a Wheeler Dealer car.

Back in 1966 the gearbox seized on my first car, a moggy 1000 traveller. So my mate and I built a homemade derrick and yanked the engine and gearbox out in the street. He went to the scrapyard to find a replacement gearbox, which he actually managed to stuff in the bag of his frog eyed sprite, and did a de-coke on the head on my living room floor. I did all the grinding in by hand and boy were my hands sore. The moggy ran like a sewing machine for another 3 years until the floor fell out.

Watching Chris lap those valves in made me wish I'd got that lapping tool back in the early 1980's. I had a Series 2A Land Rover that blew a head gasket, so while the head was off I fitted new stem seals, and lapped all the valves in using the old stick and sucker between the hand routine. The car ran a lot better afterwards, but my hands took forever to recover. Looking forward to the next (final?) video on the Mini

Lapping the valves into the head.when I was an apprentice we used to call it grinding the valves in
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 3 жыл бұрын
I think you might have hit the nail on the head with the odd injector in that cylinder. If someone has mistakenly fitted an injector from a standard Cooper rather than a Cooper S to number 3 then that cylinder is likely to have run lean, and therefore hotter, until the valve has burnt out. This is because the naturally-aspirated Cooper has less oxygen in each cylinder on the power stroke, so it can only burn a lesser amount of fuel on each ignition stroke. The Cooper S is turbo-charged and the forced induction means there is more oxygen in each cylinder when it fires, meaning it can burn more fuel, which is exactly the premise that forced induction works on. More oxygen means more fuel can be burnt which means a bigger bang. The Cooper S injectors are likely to fire a bigger shot on each pulse, standard Cooper injectors will fire a smaller shot as the engine won't be able to burn the extra fuel in standard tune so the unburnt fuel will just end up poisoning the catalyst. It seems pretty obvious that the damage to the valve was heat-related and not a mechanical failure as there's no damage to the turbo blades, so that metal had to be molten when it went out of the exhaust valve. If it had just mechanically failed then there would be turbo damage and, probably, a lump of chewed up valve stuck somewhere as there's no way a piece of metal the size of what's missing from the failed valve could go through an operating turbo impeller without causing a lot of damage that would be very easily apparent. It does rather seem to add up in a way that makes sense... Lovely job guys, and a damn good sign that you've hit the issue squarely on the head with that one. There's no way on earth it would run that sweetly after going back together if its' issues were down to the engine just being plain ragged out. There's still a chunk of work to go and a decision to make on whether to put a set of injectors in her rather than just the mismatched item, but you've got your proof of concept, the engine's back together and running as sweet as a nut which has got to be such a satisfying feeling...
@johnmoruzzi7236
@johnmoruzzi7236 3 жыл бұрын
But it was coked up so running rich instead of lean. Unless the coking happened after the valve burned ?
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnmoruzzi7236 Yes, that's most likely to have happened after the valve failed. The mixture won't have been fully compressed in the cylinder so it won't have burnt fully, and then the exhaust port being much cooler than the cylinder due to being cooled by the coolant running through the head will have allowed the coke to deposit in the exhaust port when it won't usually be able to do so due to being driven through by the piston returning up the bore...
